Page 4 6 Safeguarding Snapchat Snapchat - Snap Map Feature Snapchat have released an update for their service called Snap Map. It allows sharing of your location while using the app and is therefore a potential threat to your children’s safety if the correct precautions are not taken. Depending on the settings, the new feature means that in theory anyone in the world would be able to find out the location of people using the app at that moment. They may also be able to search for places such as schools and see pictures and videos posted by children inside. People with malicious intent would then be able to locate the user, increasing their exposure to a risky encounter. You may have seen an article in the BBC News about this issue. This offers a helpful explanation. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-40382876 It would seem that the main danger would come from children adding people they have never met as ‘friends’ to their Snapchat persona. Please note once this service is enabled it cannot be disabled. You can only ‘hide’ yourself using something called ‘Ghost Mode.’ We would advise parents to monitor their children while using this service and to remind children of the importance of not interacting with people whose identify they cannot verify whilst online. If you or your child are not happy we would further advise that you remove the feature using one of the methods listed below. If you have any concerns or wish to discuss this information with anyone, please do not hesitate to contact the academy. If you are concerned about any activity on your child’s Snapchat account, please discuss this with your child and report this to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command (CEOP) via the website: https://ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ CEOP also has some fantastic information about online safety. How to switch off Snap Map location sharing • When in photo-taking mode, pinch the screen to open Snap Map • Touch the settings cog in the top right corner of the screen • Tap "Ghost Mode" to switch off location sharing • Photos and videos posted to Snapchat's public 'Our Story' will still be discoverable on the map To be certain that your location is never being shared you can turn off location sharing on your phone rather than with in the app. How to turn off Location Services for iOS devices • Open Settings • Select Privacy • Select Location Services • Find Snapchat • Switch to Never The same thing can be achieved by altering the app settings also found in the Settings app. How to turn off location sharing for an Android devices • Open Settings • Select Apps • Find Snapchat • Select Permissions • Switch the Location toggle to off It is advisable to turn off all location services on social media including Instagram and Facebook.

Page 6 Barcelona 2018 Sports Fest Trip 2018 As April fool’s day was causing mischief around Trowbridge, 69 pupils and 8 staff of The Clarendon Academy were boarding a double decker coach bound for Barcelona. Parents arrived unusually early to send their children off which left several doubts in the minds of the staff as to why they were so happy to be child free for 5 days! As we waved goodbye to tearful parents we did also to the dreary weather that was set to stick around in our absence. After several hours, a few food stops, numerous inspirational movies and the odd sick bag, we arrived at The Caleta Palace Hotel where the sun was shining and the evening buffet was waiting. Day 1. All students took full advantage of the breakfast buffet before heading out to their first training session in preparation for the upcoming games. Later that day the U13 boys left for their first fixture and the girls took advantage of some free time in the hotel. After dinner we headed to the local bowling alley where the teachers challenged a student each to be crowned King/Queen pin with forfeits attached. Unfortunately, and to the delight of many, Mr Coates, Miss Pegrum and Ms Clune were all losers and a tuneful forfeit was heading their way! Day 2. An early start for staff and students who were still revelling in their win from the previous night as we boarded the coach and headed in to Barcelona. A group of contoured ladies were excited about the historical buildings located in the countries capital – Oh, and visiting Sephora! The remaining students headed to Nou Camp for a stadium tour. Later that evening students prepared for Clarendon’s Got Talent at the local karaoke bar. It was a slow start with the losers from the bowling taking the microphone and ruining a classic Oasis song but the night soon picked up when an unlikely grime MC started spitting some serious bars with some dodgy backing singers! Page 8 Barcelona 2018 Sports Fest Trip 2018 Team Messi Barcelona yielded another fantastic opportunity for Clarendon football to demonstrate its integral qualities that have brought increased success this season. The team comprised of a range of year 9 and 10 boys whose aims were to retain a high intensity of performance and remain positive throughout. Game 1 vs CSK Lions Our first game was against an inner city Nottingham team who were extremely resilient throughout the match. The boys started the game off well with a host of chances that went very close. The opposition were saved in part by the outstanding contributions of their goal keeper who made a number of brilliant saves. During the second half when the intensity was dropping slightly Harvey picked the ball up just inside the oppositions half and played the ball around a very able Centre back. Once inside the box Harvey was able to shoot with enough power and accuracy across the keeper to score the winning goal. The trip had started well with a win and a full team performance with all players making outstanding contributions off the bench. Game 2 vs Cottingham High School The second game pitted Team Messi against an opposition from Yorkshire whose grit and determination was very similar to ours. In the intense heat the boys created a host of chances and a reckless challenge of Steven in the box allowed Harvey to convert the penalty and give us a half time lead. In the second half we continued to retain a high tempo of match play with the likes of Oliver and Charlie chasing down every ball that came near them. However, an uncharacteristic defensive error from a free kick allowed the opposition a way back into the match. Despite a last gasp attempt at goal the match ended 1-1. The boys ended the tournament unbeaten and consistently demonstrated a willing and collective determination that would make them a very difficult team for anybody to beat. Mr. Harford and Mr. Coates Team Challengers As the senior team, the girls were treated to some new kit which was designed to make them stand out from the rest and give a more professional look. Unfortunately after the first training session I was not happy with the focus and accuracy levels of the girls and was concerned that we had travelled a long way to potentially underperform in the tournament. Our games weren’t until the afternoon so we made some squad goals and went away to train privately for nearly two hours. This had the desired effect as the other teams started to watch in fear at what looked like a very strong group of netball players gelling together beautifully. The girls were understandably nervous for their first game however settled quickly and accurate shooting from Pelin and Louise coupled with strong defensive play from Becca and Grace C secured the first win. Page 9 Barcelona 2018 Sports Fest Trip 2018 The remaining teams took notice as the 10-1 win caused a stir in the crowd. As the day progressed the games became more competitive as the strength of the opposition grew. Both Chloe P and Maisie had phenomenal games applying the defensive practices we had done in the morning to help turn the ball. There were now murmurs that we were “obviously a private school and it wasn’t fair that we were in the same tournament as grammar schools!” Lily very much enjoyed this comment and went on to have her best game displaying movement timing and drive. We knew that there was one school left to beat if we were to secure the overall win. Chloe had an amazing game, driving on to the ball and not footworking once! As the girls battled hard against a very strong and experienced opposition Grace W captained fantastically working harder than ever and flushing the team with positivity. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough to take the win as some questionable umpiring prevented our goal which lead to a turnover and loss of two. Still, second place in a strong field meant every pupil came away feeling victorious. I loved watching every game. Thanks girls :o) Ms. Clune Team Jets Team Jets arrived at the venue not knowing what to expect, the opposition were from all around the country and were taller and more physical than our girls. However, that didn’t deter them. Team jets won their first game comfortably with a 7 nil win, with not much time to spare they were on again with another solid performance displayed by all with a 5-1 victory. The winning strike continued with them winning the next two games with ease. Miss Fox and the Captain Molly discussed team tactics and realised their 5th game was the most important game as the school we were up against, also hadn’t lost a game. The girls trained hard out in the sun working on were not 100% focused, 2-1 down at half time shooting and timing of passes. The game of a position they had not been in all the tournament was up next with Miss Fox tournament, Miss Fox had to give a quick, opting not to umpire the game so she could sharp team talk. Page 10 Barcelona 2018 Sports Fest Trip 2018 Team Storm Team Storm didn’t have their tournament until the afternoon, so the girls were feeling very motivated after seeing the wins of the other teams in the morning. The girls played well together from the first game, and they were able to come away from the first game and know what they needed to do to improve for the next games. The girls played so well together regardless of what mix of girls were on court. The defence especially worked incredibly hard, getting every rebound, loads of interceptions and generally making it very hard for the shooters to get the ball. Every game played was a very close result with only one or two goals in it. At the end of the tournament several of the teams were tied, so it came down to point difference and the girls managed to come 4th. The girls were incredibly proud of what they had achieved after not playing together properly before this tournament. Miss. In their fourth game, the girls made some unforced errors which the opposition capitalised on, however this didn’t stop Holly turning over the ball and keeping her WA out of the game. At half time, the girls had a quick debrief on what they needed to do, and it showed in the last half of the game, with Gemma making strong drives
Page 11 News from PE Clarendon Gymnastics Squad Fantastic result for the Clarendon Gymnastics Squad On Tuesday 27th Miss Fox and Miss Bryant took 4 teams of gymnasts to the West Wilts Gymnastics Competition. All four teams performed fantastically and worked extremely hard on their vaults and floor routines. After incredible performances from all gymnasts, the beginner team and advanced team are now West Wilts Champions and the intermediate team came a very close second place. For the first time ever all 3 teams are through to the Wiltshire Finals in May. We had stand out performances from Neave getting her squat through vault for the first time on her second vault as well as Lacey and Nicole doing their best ever handstands. A massive well done to all the gymnasts that took part, they showcased the true Clarendon spirit and made Miss Fox and Miss Bryant very proud.
Page 12 PE Regional Finals for Indoor Cricket On a roasting hot day in April ten girls travelled to the Ageas Bowl in Southampton to take on the elite of the indoor cricketing world, from the South of England and entirety of Wales. The girls throughout the day challenged and competed strongly within their group, that was comprised of two independent schools from Bournemouth and Devon as well as the only other comprehensive from the deep valleys of Swansea. The girls finished the tournament in 5th in these regions claiming the scalp of the Welsh on their way to this ranking, as well as racking up their first century in a competitive game play, a feat on its own. The girls should be immensely proud of themselves in gaining the title of best comprehensive school in the South-West of England and Wales, because I know we certainly are. Page 14 Humanities Trip to Pompeii It was a very early start on Friday morning to catch our flight from Luton Airport to Naples. As soon as we landed we were met by brilliant sunshine and a very grumpy bus driver. It was a short drive to Mt Vesuvius which was the first excursion of the day. Miss Lockyer proved very popular with the ticket officer who declared she had ‘beautiful eyes’ and kissed her hand repeatedly – A very Italian welcome! We then started the long walk up to the top of the active Volcano. At the very top we were met by a Geologist who spoke to us about the famous eruption in AD79 and also how they monitor the volcano today. We were able to see some fumaroles as well as seismometers and spectrometers which measure the sulphur dioxide levels. We then had a brilliant walk around the crater which had some fantastic views of the Bay of Naples. After the walk back to the coach we travelled to our accommodation; Hotel Vittoria. We unpacked and headed down for a delicious 3 course Italian meal. That evening we headed out into the town of Pompeii where Mrs Raynes, Miss Lockyer and Mr Worsfold had delicious Italian cakes and coffee and the students had a McDonalds (apparently the Italian burgers taste the same as British). On day two we walked from our hotel to the more. historic site of Pompeii. We met a guide at the In the afternoon the students entrance who walked us through many of the were allowed to go off and significant houses and buildings. We saw explore the site by homes, the bath house, fast food restaurants, themselves. There was much hilarity in the temples, the main square and much, much Pompeii brothel ruins as the walls are painted with 2000 year old images to ‘get people in the mood’. The second evening consisted of another trip into Pompeii and this time we sat in the beautiful town square which had an exciting nightlife. More coffee and cake was consumed by the staff. More McDonalds by the students.
Page 15 Humanities Trip to Pompeii In the afternoon we travelled home via Gatwick and arrived back at Clarendon by 10pm. Thank you to all the students for being so well behaved and for Miss Lockyer and Mr Worsfold for giving up their weekend to help out. The trip will be running next year so look out for the letters in September On the last day we got up early and caught a local train to the beautiful town of Sorrento. We spent an hour on the beach before heading into town to let the students explore. Performing Arts SMUGGLERS IN SALISBURY! BRAND NEW MUSICAL AT SALISBURY PLAYHOUSE A group of Clarendon students went to Salisbury Playhouse to see a brand new musical version of J Meade Faulkner’s classic novel of smuggling and the high seas MOONFLEET. The students had a really good time – for some of them this was their first visit to a live theatre performance and they behaved like they had been going all their lives. For a small group of our students, those who are interested in technical theatre they had a greater experience as they were allowed to sit near to the sound technician as he controlled the show’s sound effects and microphones. The performance had a marvellous atmospheric set and some strong performances that were enjoyed by us all, and it’s generally agreed we can’t wait for the next one! Mrs Warren
