Note from the Editor Hey all, Welcome to Edition 2 for 2018. Firstly, the committee welcome a new member… Graeme Sutton, who has been doing some pretty cool work doing some research on the history of the club, which he will be presenting in each edition of Wheelspin. Prizegiving saw a good turn out, it was a great night… a big thanks to Tim Roper for organising! Congratulations to all those that received awards! Thank you to Greg Hirst & Eifion Williams for completing Driver Profiles, and to Graeme Sutton for his input into a number of articles for Wheelspin. Just a reminder, if anyone is wanting to put any information in Wheelspin, whether it be an article, an advert, ideas on what else you would like to see included or whatever it may be, please get in touch with me. Additionally, recently I’ve had a few query what “BLAT Photography” stands for, and I can advise it doesn’t stand for “Bacon Lettuce Avacado Tomato”! Hahaha So for those that don’t know, it appropriately stands for “Brake Late And Turn”, and hey, you all like to take those race cars out for a wee “Blat” once in a while eh! Speaking of BLAT Photography – Im gutted to say that the Okato Rallysprint was the first event I was unable to attend in the last 2 years! So, I’d like to say a big thanks to everyone that provided photos etc (Photo credits detailed against all photos) Also, just a reminder to all paid members, if your address changes, please ensure Annabelle is advised so that you receive future Wheelspins etc. Cheers Stace Photos within Wheelspin courtesy of Stacey Jeffrey (unless otherwise stated) Facebook Page: BLAT Photography
Club Captains Stuff… I should write this up straight after the events instead of waiting until two months later, and have to try and remember what happened. Three months have flown by and Stace kept reminding me but I did leave this to the last minute. I’ve been flat out with work and cars and family stuff. STCC Double Hill Climb Day 1 was a wet and slippery Tiromoana road hill climb. I personally wasn’t having much fun and had a terrible day, maybe I was just chicken because I took the old black EVO III for a blast and didn’t want to break it. The lack of seat time didn’t help either. Unfortunately Eifion Williams had a big off, but luckily he was ok even without a roll cage in the car, very lucky! He and Mike Foreman are already building a new car, the irony is that Mike hadn’t planned to bring the EVO 4 to that event, but his other car wouldn’t rev past 4500rpm properly so there was a Friday night car swap. Although the weather was rubbish, and a few people including myself got stuck trying to get out of the paddock, the day ran very smoothly. Day 2 was Ararata Road, and yehaa it wasn’t raining although there were some wet slippery patches. For those that have never done this event it is an awesome piece of road, highly recommended. The road was drying during the day and everyone that competed started getting faster and faster. Graeme Sutton broke the course record with a 1:48.98, the previous record was held by Alan Austin with a 1:49.50. Well done to all the competitors, and thank you South Taranaki Car Club and all the helpers, and the sponsor DIGN4U Prizegiving A big thank you goes out to Tim Roper for organizing the prize giving this year, he did a fantastic job albeit getting dropped in the deep end a wee bit. Thanks to all that came along, was a good night and there’s plenty of photos to show for it. Wanganui Car Club – Western line Hill Climb A few of us ventured to Wanganui on 23rd June for a hill climb to take on WCC. Only 1.5km long but very challenging. Graeme won it outright. The weather was changeable at best, there were some slippery patches, as well as a mud slide to navigate. Only about 12 or 14 competitors on the day and 5 or 6 were from TCC. A very well run event by a small number of organisers, the car barely got a chance to cool down and I was on my way back to New Plymouth by 1:30pm Okato RallySprint The sun rose on Okato on the 30th June to the sound of rally cars. We only had 16 competitors, which for me as one of the organisers was quit disappointing. There was lots of talk around the rally and club sport community in the weeks leading up to the event that was positive and seemed like we were going to get a full field, but this did not eventuate. Most of the competitors were from out of town which was fantastic to see. The intention was to run as a rally stage, with all the relevant officials in place and use time controls as time controls, so that people who would normally not experience a rally with check in time and targets etc to learn how it runs without penalty. Just to add to the confused competitors, Allport Motorsport kindly supplied stage notes to all competitors at no cost. Even if the competitors didn’t utilize the notes they were able to gain some valuable experience. As expected there was good racing with not too much carnage. There was cars on fire, cars with panel damage, and cars with holes in the side of the engine block by the end of the day. Where else would you get potentially 84km of racing for $150, I’m fairly sure that price will not be so low next time. Considering we had about 28 officials and helpers on the route, all of which were unpaid. A BIG SHOUT OUT to the volunteers on the day not to mention the amount of work put in pre-event by the likes of Garnett, we couldn’t have run the event without you all. I went to Okato with the sole intention of winning, 1st run through for us was a bit of a cruise, 2nd run I started to push it a bit and a turbo hose blew apart with a split about 3 inches long about a km down Dover road, the car is no fun at all with zero boost. I shot off to New Plymouth to find a hose, Partmaster Repco and SuperCheap were all useless to me. Shot home and pulled the hose of the EVO 3 hoping it would fit but no luck. I wrapped the blown one with half a roll of foil tape and refitted it, went up the road and as soon as I gave it some jandal it blew again, back to no boost, oh well on the trailer and go home and sulk. See you all at the kart track later this month (unless I don’t get back from the USA in time), otherwise Stratford Street Sprint is coming up, and also Hampton Downs track day Cheers, Glen B
Presidents Report Hi all Just a quick note from me for this edition. The shortest day has come and gone and where now on the climb back to the summer with longer, warmer and drier days. And so I’m sure many of you will be looking forward to some long awaited event toward the coming summer, Track day at Hampton Downs, our own speed weekend with the Waitara street sprint, and one more date in mind in late November, still some debate amongst the committee about what that could be, personally I had old dehav in mind, but what do you all think? The Taranaki Car Club Tree By Graeme Sutton The Taranaki Car Club Tree This tree stands at the start of the Kaipikari Road Hillclimb, when it was used as a Gold Star Hillclimb Round. What is its significance to the Taranaki Car Club? Does anyone know? I was informed many years ago, but can’t recall much; unfortunately the person that told me about it has passed away, as have many of our older members with knowledge of said tree. What we do know… It has significance to the Taranaki Car Club, It wasn’t a crash at Kaipikari at all. The current land owner is aware it has connections to the Taranaki Car Club, but that is all he knows, he is the son of the original owner, who knew about the “tree” when it was planted. It would be great if anyone can shed some more light on it!! UPDATE: Well! We have been informed as to what the significance of this tree is to the Taranaki Car Club, many thanks to past member Gavin Webster, It goes like this, Every time the TCC used Kaipikari Road Hillclimb, when cars had finished their run, the driver turned right and drove down thru the paddocks to the pits and onto the start line again. TCC used the Kaipikari Road Hillclimb twice a year in those times, part of the “payment” was a donation of a tree seedling that was planted in the landowners drive way, the tree that stands at the start line (old start line) was the last one donated by the TCC after the landowners driveway was filled up with trees.

Went through a fence (Car tried to fly), rolled twice, ended up 200 metres down a gulley. Ooooops, sorry Mike!
When things go wrong… By Stace Jeffrey Sitting in the cold and wet at South Taranaki Car Clubs Tiromoana Road hillclimb (12/05/18), waiting for the next car to come round the corner with my camera poised… but that didn’t happen, and I was witness to Eifion (who was competing in Mike Foremans car) plowing sideways into the fence on the corner. The car went airborne (taking a couple of battens and No. 8 wire with him). Knowing there was a HUGE drop-off on that corner, worried as hell for Eifion as I heard the first BANG resonate through to where I was, and then there was another! Feeling helpless given I was about 500 meters or so away, I sat and waited and listened over the radio I had! Doug Peach (First Aid/recovery etc) was immediately called. The event ceased while checks were carried out/assessments made. It was confirmed that Eifion was a very lucky man, with minimal injuries (a little bruising). The car then remained in place whilst the remainder of the event continued. At the end of the day, Hainsley Mills (the farmer who kindly offered to remove the car with his Tractor), Lee Cloke, Doug Peach (and son Garrett), and myself (and daughter Georgia) assisted with the retrieval of the car)
When things go wrong… By Stace Jeffrey (Cont…) Lee, Georgia and I trundled down the steep hill (The photos just don’t demonstrate how steep it was, and how far down the car was parked), & Doug and Garrett caught a lift with Hainsley in the tractor. The car was parked in a swamp, and was wrapped in the No 8 wire (along with the odd batten) that Eifion collected on the way down. Then the extraction begun….. Had the best seats in the house Doug & Hainsley preparing for the tow… Garrett & Georgia had the best job… just before removing the No. 8 wire & helping the tractor driver! lol Battens lol Lee took on the task of steering the car Its on the move! whilst being towed backwards! Heading up the hill… whilst I was wishing I We all pushed it onto the trailer, ready to was in the car or tractor! Lol … Man those head home. hills were steep! The car is now in the process of being re-shelled. Watch this space for the return of this car. Note: Approval was given by all parties referenced in this article to publish
South Taranaki Car Club Dual Hillclimb Weekend - by Graeme Sutton Wet to Dry in 24 hours! South Taranaki Car Club Dual Hillclimb Weekend After a long Friday night! (what’s new in that) got loaded ready for an early am leave to Tiromoana Road Hillclimb, at Eltham South Taranaki. But not before having to repair the trailer jockey wheel (note to self! don’t lend trailer to just anyone!) and untangle the winch rope that was wound around the winch gears, all this after a mammoth front end suspension rebuild and upgrade. Saturday morning 6.45 in morning was still darkish, and raining! But hey it is a 50 minute drive to Eltham, and hopefully it would not rain! Arrived at the venue, nobody about, Shit have they canned it already! It wasn’t raining tho, one positive! Soon some of the club officials arrived, I proceeded to unload, road was damp, lots of lichen growing on the road surface. More victims started to arrive, with the ones that travelled the furthest amongst the early arrivals, Chief organiser Helen Cameron stated they had 20 entries for the day, a vast improvement on the previous year which had 6 competitors. Observation run was uneventful but cold in an open top car, managed a 25 point turn around at the end, the road was barely wide enough for a go-kart let alone the Jedi or a regular car. Lined up for practice run! It was cold , horrible start, but made it to the end, road extremely slippery, wheel spin when squeezing the gas pedal, mmm me thinks this is nuts, could end up not having a straight racer if I try to go any faster. Went and talked with Helen, said I wasn’t super nuts, and that I would like to withdraw! She wasn’t pleased with my reasoning, But encouraged! Told me, I had to do 1 official run, So reluctantly I agreed! Lined up, as I was getting ready , a timing issue reared its head, apparently it was raining at the finish line and the beam wasn’t tripping, I sat in the car, by which at this time it was raining and bloody cold! Eventually what seemed like hours (probably 4 mins total) I was on my way, It was ok-ish to the first corner! I couldn’t see where I was going! Rain even though not hard was too difficult to see past/thru, pushed visor up just a little and proceeded to cruise to the finish line! I decided after sitting at the finish line by which time I was saturated thru to the skin, as Kenny Rogers stated in the “Gambler” You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, Know when to walk away and know when to run. I decided it was time to walk away! It turned out a good choice on my part, with several others having off road excursions during the remainder of the day. I loaded up, got out of wet gear and set sail for New Plymouth. Helens departing comment “see you tomorrow”, Yeah right me thought! With this rain, a boat I don’t have. Decided to dry out driving gear, not knowing how or what I should do to dry it out, I as the Google dude, I know he knows everything! Put it in the tumble drier on low was the answer from DuPont manufacturers of Nomex, but do not hang it wet with a coat hanger!! Left car on trailer, thinking if it pissing down in the morning it can stay in the shed, I was still going to go take a look tho.
South Taranaki Car Club Dual Hillclimb Weekend - by Graeme Sutton (Cont…) A big ups goes out to Stacey from BLAT Photography, for enduring the weather and taking the all-important photographs. Photo from the lens of Stacey @ BLAT Photography The morning arrived way too fast, but at least it wasn’t raining in New Plymouth at this time, So have a breakfast, and headed south this time to Ararata Road east of Hawera, about 1 hours’ drive from New Plymouth. Got to Inglewood, it’s pissing down, but my bro said it was going to be fine! Didn’t look like it to me! I am this far so kept on going, rain and heavy mist around Tariki Stratford area, this not looking promising!, get to Highlands/Lowlands, blue sky , no rain! Yay! A small chance of a dry run, preceded on to Ararata Road, arrived people was already there, and starting set up, I unloaded again on a narrow piece of road. Got ready for the day, at least at this time not Rain!!! Observation run, yielded way too many corners, (36 apparently in 3 kms) and lots bumps, and moisture, BUT at least I could see where I was going. First official run was bad, driver not sure what he was doing! Wrong gears, missed braking points, but was fun ride, made it to the end kept it on the island, happy, front end felt good. As the day progressed, patches of the road dried out, but was still wet under the tree covered areas. 2nd run, driver awake this time, gunned the Ducati 998R power, much better, with a 1.48.98 sec run. Super-fast Toyota driver Webster Gough came down to inform me of the time I had posted stating he didn’t think he could match mine, he ran second on the day. One run left, It was a lousy start but most of the rest was good, the flying finish was awesome.
South Taranaki Car Club Dual Hillclimb Weekend - by Graeme Sutton (Cont…) Well that was it , still going , ready to load up, Jason organiser for the event came down and asked if I wanted another shot, as they had got something wrong with the timing, as I had recorded a 1.46.56 sec run, and they believed it was a missed time, as it wasn’t possible in their eyes to have done that. Inspection of my on board data, showed that the 1.46 was on the money! But who cares, I had fun, met up with some racers I hadn’t seen in some years, thanks to the Wellington region racers for coming up to skid with us, Congratulations to Loren Brookes for taking out the weekend. Helen informed at prize giving that it was new track record, happy with that! Club History – Stonnell Cup By Graeme Sutton The Stonnell Cup aka “Clubman’s Cup” The Stonnell Cup has no relevance to vehicle competition, within the Taranaki Car Club, or for that matter any competition, it is a participation trophy that rewards "club man" spirit and support of Taranaki Car Club events/happenings (I suppose in the PC of today, world "club person" is more correct) but this goes back to the 1950's, points are awarded as per that following schedule, Members have to sign the attendance register to collect "clubmans" points at each event The “Stonnell Cup” was donated by the Lou B Stonnell in 1957, Lou Stonnell was a well-known local motor racing enthusiast famous for racing a 1913 Stutz Bearcat, now on display at Southwards Museum in Paraparaumu, Excerpt from the Daily News 29th May 2009 by Georgina Bailey Obituary Lou Stonnell Lou Stonnell’s last trip home to Taranaki was to say goodbye to an old girlfriend, The family’s 1913 Stutz Bearcat racing car, the only privately owned car of its type, was on show by Southwards Car Museum. Lou had sold the family Stutz to the museum many years ago. But when he heard the car was to be visiting New Plymouth in February he was determined to see it. (The Stutz was visiting New Plymouth as part of the Paritutu Sprint Series, being run by the Taranaki Car Club 22nd February 2009)This was despite being unwell with the illness that claimed his life this week.
Club History – Stonnell Cup By Graeme Sutton His effort was not unusual- wheels have been a passion in his life. Lou raced his Lynx Formula Junior powered by Ford Cortina engine, at numerous New Zealand Grand Prix meetings while he had a young family. He was always off to “Ardmore or Wigram” daughter Karen Lane says. He would have liked to hit the international circuit but had to be reminded he had a young family and there was no money for such things. In the early 1950’s he was involved in the Taranaki Car club and became known as ”the godfather of motor race meetings” The New Plymouth City Council set up the Scenic Cities Promotion Society in the 1960’s and Lou organised a motor racing event at Paritutu. Long before high tech communications, Lou parked a ready-mix concrete truck at each bend on the circuit, and each truck was in radio telephone contact with event organiser Lou. On year three MANZ race officials’ arrived and tried to shut the event down because too many races were being run in one day. Lou convinced them to let him show them how it was run for the first three races and then make their decision. They described his organisation as “poetry in motion”. The races went on. Clubman’s Trophy, Stonnell Cup 1st clubman’s (this is a participation trophy it is not connected to competition at all, points are gained for supporting and helping run the club during the year) Points Allocations: Event Organisers; 3 points (Sprint’s, Hillclimbs, Autocross’, Motokhana’s, Rally’s, Trial’s EOY Prize Giving,) Event Entrants; 2 points (all participants in all events.
