PRINCIPAL’S REPORT The end of an era? It is the day, that as teachers, we both look forward to with a mixture of joy and sadness. Our Class of 2021 have finally come to the end of their journey with us and we have all had a day of smiles and laughter. And yes, I have seen any number of people with more than a hint of a tear in the eye! It is always a privilege to be able to play a part in the lives of our young people and I am particularly pleased that we have been able to support this cohort through, what will without doubt have been, one of the most stressful times of their lives. There have been many factors that they have had to deal with as young adults. They were expected to approach the challenges of their lives whilst having to plan and prepare for their futures, complete their studies and provide evidence for their final grades through assessment. For many they had to do all of this whilst struggling with the normal stresses that come with passing from being children to young adults and being expected to deal with things “like a grown up”. As the adults that have been closest to them for a good part of this process, we know how hard this has been for them and so it was not unexpected that today would be a little emotional for all of us. Thankfully it’s not quite goodbye forever. We will be having our Year 11 Ball at Tregenna Castle on 1st July and we encourage them all to keep in touch as they continue their education or enter the world of work. Of course as one group leaves us we have to plan for every other group to step up a year to take their place. New students will arrive after the summer break, students in the lower school will enter the upper school and a whole new team of junior leaders and prefects will need to be appointed. But did you know we actually start to plan for the leaving of our cohorts before they have even joined us with us in Year 7? We do this by finding out as much as we can about them before they join us. We then set a series of challenges for them over 5 years to help them develop intellectually, spiritually and morally towards becoming a valued member of their local, national and international communities. We constantly review each young person’s progress on these respective journeys, supporting when they find things difficult and setting new challenges when they are excelling. So whilst it is the end of one era, a whole new era will start for us again soon, whilst we continue to support every one of our young people on their own personal journey towards the end of their era with us. We all became teachers to savour days like today, so forgive us if we too take a little sense of pride in our work, and if you see teacher today, thank them for everything that they have done. They really will appreciate it! Best wishes Les Hall Academy Principal
A WORD FROM MR ROYLE And so, that’s it! We have all made it to half term! Very best wishes from all of us to the departing Year 11 students. When you came to your initial meetings at the beginning of ‘big school’, I bet you never thought that your last couple of years would have been like this. Congratulations on such resilience and we are all looking forward to your leaving events, in particular your Leavers’ Ball at the Tregenna in a few weeks. And what that does mean is that we all move up a little. Year 10 - over to you to set an example and to lead the way. New Prefect team, and a chance for you to represent the whole student body by standing for election to the Junior Leadership Team. We are looking forward to welcoming Year 9 students into Key Stage Four at the Key Stage Three Graduation ceremony on 8th July. Lots of changes for you and so this is a chance to look back and reminisce as well as being excited about the future and your final 18 months at the Academy. Year 8 students have just done their fast track options and so will be starting a GCSE course in September. Year 7 students will have to help us welcome approximately 200 new Year 7 students to the school in September. We also have staff moving on and joining us and we will tell you about them in future newsletters. Some quick reminders: • Bus passes - everyone who has paid for travel on a Mounts bay Minibus or the MBA50, MBA51 or MBA52 should now have a bus pass which will be valid for next half term. The bus passes with the blue stripe run out today and should be put into the recycling. No boarding the bus without a bus pass please next half term. Bus passes can be purchased via parental or by talking to Mrs Eddy on seddy@mountsbay.org • Punctuality - keep it up and a big thanks to everyone who has changed their morning routines in order to get to school on time. I know that the Marazion bus has arrived at 8:33 twice this week (but cctv shows all students off the bus and the bus is pulling out of the bus bay by 8:34). Unfortunately there are still a number of parents dropping their children off after 8:30 - you are on the cctv as well! Please can I remind all of these parents that school starts at 8:30 and so if you are dropping children off, please can this be done by 8:25 so that they can get to class ready to go at 8:30. • We have big plans for a redesign of the bus bay to make it safer and to try to reduce congestion at the beginning and end of the day. This will involve moving the area where students board the MBA minibuses as well as the areas where parents can pick up and drop off students - from September this cannot be done in the bus bay, but we will of cause give more information in future newsletters.
A WORD FROM MR ROYLE • Having focussed on consistency in terms of behaviour expectations over the past few weeks, we shall be looking at achievements after half term. We are trying to get the school shop up and running so that your achievement points actually mean something. Do you know that Year 11 students were able to spend their achievement points on getting discounted ball tickets? 500 points was worth £5 off the ticket price! Certainly worth working for. Big thank to all students and staff for their work this term. Though it is hard work, it’s great to be back isn’t it? Spare a thought for my nephew in Bolton who has been asked to isolate along with over half of the students at his school! Covid is still around and so please keep safe and remember Hands, Face, Space. Get some rest next week and we can all come back in a week’s time and enjoy Project Week and the build up to the DeTox festival on Friday 11th June. Keep well and #BeKind STOP PRESS! – Anyone using the A1 route to Newlyn, Gwavas Corssroads, Paul, Sheffield, St Buryan, Crows an Wra and Sennen. County have informed us today that this bus will now be renamed the MB – G – A1 and will be operated by Go Cornwall bus rather than by Williams Travel. However, I believe that there are no changes to timings. Apologies about this late notice – we have only been told this today (Friday 28th May). Sports fixtures are now happening more frequently and so this means students are given many opportunities to represent the school in a wider variety of competitive events. SPORTS Over the next couple of weeks, parents and carers will receive correspondence via FIXTURE ParentMail asking to provide consent for their child to participate in sports fixtures. This blanket consent form will give permission UPDATE for students to participate in all fixtures as opposed to requiring parents and carers to provide it for specific occasions. It is worth remembering that should parental emergency contact information or medical information change at any time, these must be communicated with school in case they are required.
BE INSPIRED Bash Street Theatre On Wednesday Bash Street Theatre visited Mounts Bay to perform the world premier of their latest show ‘The Cameraman’ to Year 7 and Year 8 students. Conditions were perfect for the two performances and students sat outside in the sun. The cast of four played multiple characters in the fast paced, funny, cleverly staged comedy which included live music and special effects. The plot centred on a stolen diamond, police corruption and Parisian café life. Lila, Year 8 said: “ It was a great show. I really enjoyed it!” Report by: Mrs Murray-Lambrou
BE ADVENTUROUS MBA Cycle Pump Track We are proud to announce the completion of the new MBA Cycle Pump Track. Two MBA students and expert riders, Sienna and Bibi, took an inaugural spin round the track this week. You can see a film of their ride round here: https://youtu.be/B0BqO5qVHjc The project was made possible through a unique partnership between British Cycling, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and Sport England, the Places to Ride programme which has made £15 million available to ensure a lasting legacy in England from the 2019 UCI Road World Championships. The championships took place in Yorkshire in September 2019. Andy Farr, Head of Business Planning and Transformation at British Cycling, said: “MBA is doing great work to get more people cycling in Cornwall so we are pleased to support their efforts to bring the community together and use the MBA cycle track through Places to Ride. The track will be open for bookings soon. Keep your eye on the MBA website and newsletter for more details. MBA will be using the track after we return from half term during Project Week. Exciting times! Report by: Mr N Eddy

BE INSPIRED Dream Ice Cream Winners A huge well done to Rosa (1st place) and Phoebe (2nd place) for their wonderful ice cream creations. Rosa created a raspberry ice cream with a chocolate and chopped nuts ripple and Phoebe created a 'Movie night' ice cream which is caramel ice cream with a M&M and pretzel ripple. Miss Walters made these at the weekend and they will be stocked in the shops over half term! Well done girls! Report by: Miss Walters
BE INSPIRED Year 8 Science Year 8 Science students have been studying DNA this week. They made some fantastic DNA models using sweets. Report by: Mr Thorne
BE CURIOUS Grow Your Own This week in the MBA garden we have been really busy planting all our summer plants in the polytunnel. Firstly, we finished clearing all our winter vegetables, then the students really enjoyed mulching the beds with a layer of old manure. This will add all the nutrients needed for another season of growth. After feeding the soil we planted a selection of climbing plants including six different varieties of tomatoes, two types of cucumber, and two types of melon. A length of string with a knot on the bottom was placed under each plant as it went into the soil, and then it was tied to the frame of the poly tunnel. As they grow the stem is wound around the string and the plants will climb over 6ft to the top of the tunnel. The melons, tomatoes and cucumbers will then mature and hang from the plant and be easy to harvest. The students have learnt about spacing climbing plants, especially regarding keeping a good airflow between them to prevent easy build up of diseases and pests. Report by: Mr New
BE CURIOUS Grow Your Own In between the climbers we planted lots of basil seedlings, which as you know go very well with a tomato salad! They also help to keep pests such as aphids off the tomato plants which is great. Finally we planted lots of Devils Brew chilli plants among the climbers to fill the second bed. These will provide lots of entertainment when it comes to tasting the harvest! Report by: Mr New
BE INSPIRED Year 7 Science Year 7 students have been studying craters this week and so completed practical work to investigate the factors which affect their size. This is part of their ‘Can we colonise Mars?’ topic. We looked at the concept of evidence as we gathered our own data and the HPL of linking by looking at the patterns this data showed us. Report by: Miss Page
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Year 11 Dance This week the Year 11 Dance students had their final performance exam and they did not disappoint! They delivered an outstanding performance and worked with real dedication, creativity and professionalism. This group have been so supportive of one another and have all developed their skills and made fantastic progress throughout the course. Their final piece was an extract of a piece by contemporary choreographer, Jeremy Lepine, combined with their own movement material. They all did a brilliant job and I am so incredibly proud of each and every one of them. They have been a real joy to teach and I know they will all go on to do wonderful things. Thank you Dance class of 2021! If you are lucky you might catch one last performance by these talented students at the Detox Festival on Friday 11th June! Report by: Miss Taylor-Hingston
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Year 11 Final Catering Lesson I thought it would be great to end the year by setting the challenge of making a proper Cornish pasty. After talking through the right ingredients that should be in a pasty, such as skirt, turnip, potato, onion, salt and pepper. I then shared how to crimp properly. This could be done in two ways, either by crimping on the side, or on top. Report by: Miss Osborne
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Year 11 Final Catering Lesson It was entertaining to see them give this a go, and some were more successful than others.I then asked Mr Jenkin to come and taste the pasties with me. Harry N and Izzie H were the tastiest and closest to a pasty. I hope the Year 11 students have enjoyed their food lessons and at very least now feel confident and skilled enough to cook for themselves and their families. I wish them all the very best in their futures wherever it takes them. Please keep in touch and keep me informed of any news and all your future successes. Report by: Miss Osborne
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Music Update Over the last few weeks we have been able to move Key Stage 3 Music back in to the Music Block, and get back to practical music making! It’s been so exciting to finally let Year 7 loose in the department after hearing so much about it for nearly the whole year, and also to get Year 8 back in and out of a regular class room! Mrs Brown’s classes have been working in our industry standard technology suite, having an introduction to composing using technology. There have been some awesome pieces coming together already and we have some budding producers getting stuck in. Mr Curnow’s classes have been playing Ukulele and singing, and he has uncovered some great singers who we’ll be seeing lots of in performances in the future! Mr Roberts’ classes have been rocking out in The Locker, learning drums, bass, guitar, keyboards and band skills, and getting to play on stage as a group! We are making up for lost time and making sure that all KS3 students get an amazing music experience before the summer holidays. We have also been open every day after school for our Year group Music MixX Clubs. Each afternoon until 4pm we have one Year group in at a time, and they have free choice of what to try and what to work on. So we’ve had people producing and recording in the tech room, loads of singers rehearsing and bands getting songs together for our first performances of the school year at the Detox Festival after half term. There are some really exciting performances coming together and we can’t wait to share them all with you at the festival! Report by: Mr Darren Roberts
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Music Update Qube Records is also starting to come back to life. We’ve had some great recording sessions working on brilliant new original music from Bernie and Angela Shilson, Sophie Payne and Rosa Hoadley, ably assisted by Gold Arts Award student Morgan Long with lots more in over half term. We have also booked a small run of local gigs in the summer, culminating at two consecutive days at the amazing Rock Oyster Festival playing with artists such as Soul II Soul and Sophie Ellis-Bextor! The full gig list: Friday 11th June Detox Festival - MBA Sunday 27th June Golowan Festival - Penzance Promenade (Afternoon) Wednesday 7th July Penlee Open Air Theatre - Penzance (Evening) Sunday 18th July Helston Lakeside Events Square - Helston (Afternoon) Saturday 31st July Rock Oyster Festival - St Minver Sunday 1st August Rock Oyster Festival - St Minver Tickets for the Penlee Open Air Theatre show are available on the Penlee website here: https://www.penleeparktheatre.com/product/ mounts-bay-schoolsummer-concert/ Tickets for Rock Oyster Festival are available here: https:// rockoyster.seetickets.com/content/ticket-options We can’t wait to get back on stage and we hope to see lots of you at the shows! At Qube Records we are always well known for working with bands and musicians from our local community and music scene, and this week we welcomed back our favourite punk heroes Die Spangle to film and record a special live set. It was great to hear the studio blazing with shouts of SHARK ATTACK ON LONG ROCK BEACH again after so long and the show will be available to watch online soon… For more information as always head over to www.quberecords.org and don’t forget to follow quberecords on instagram and twitter.

BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Year 10 Art Year 10 students took part in a drawing workshop with artist Ben Sanderson on Wednesday. The focus of the workshop was to look at the structure of objects and understanding form, space and pattern of natural forms. The students then went out to the orchard to experiment with drawing with paintbrushes on long sticks to capture an overall impression of the buttercups and daisies using brush and ink. Returning to the art room, we used mono printing techniques. Lots of fun had by all! Text Report by: Mrs Dale

BE COMPETITIVE Year 10 Football Match It was great to get back to fixtures this week! The Year 10 football team put in a superb team effort and played a strong, physical Falmouth School team. MBA took a 2-0 lead into half time, thanks to two great passing moves and finishes from Isaac F and Will W. Falmouth came back strong in the second half and scored from distance to leave a tight finish. MBA continued to play well and won 2-1. They now head on in to the Cornwall Cup Semi Final. Well done to all involved. Report by: Mr Strong
BE COMPETITIVE Year 11 PE During Year 11’s last week in PE, they took part in the ‘slip and slide’ in the pouring rain! Despite the weather the students had a great time! TASSOMAI YOUR WAY TO SUCCESS Tassomai is an intelligent online learning program helping students at all levels achieve outstanding results. Using Tassomai builds knowledge, boosts confidence and reduces exam stress. All students have to do is spend 15 minutes a day answering questions. It doesn’t matter if they get it wrong because Tassomai has an algorithm that works with each individual student and this produces a Tassomai Tree, which is a new feature to visualise learner knowledge acquisition - each leaf represents a question, which is colour-coded relating to how well the student performed in that question! Tassomai is available to all Year 10 and 11 students. Here are the Top 10 for Years 10 and 11 this week - based on accuracy. (HPL for all these students!) A number of our colleagues are planning to do some fundraising, to help get Paul, a service veteran paralysed in a freak accident in 2019, back home. Without your help Paul faces a future permanently isolated from his family, his home, his life, you can change that. On 20th November 2019 Paul experienced an extremely traumatic life changing accident while windsurfing resulting in a severe spinal cord injury. Initially Paul was in hospital in Derriford and then Salisbury and for the past 12 months, while back in Cornwall, he and his wife have been unable to meet due to the Pandemic, in fact, she has seen Paul for just six hours in 15 months! Due to his spinal injury being incomplete it will take a very long time, years rather than months, for Paul to experience any recovery. There is a lot of equipment and physiotherapy Paul will need and if we can help towards this in any way, it would be fantastic. We would like to help with the costs of getting the house reformed so Paul can return home. We would also like to help pay for physiotherapy sessions at a hydrotherapy pool as Kate knows that hydrotherapy will be a massive help for Paul. The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity have set up a JustGiving page here: “letsgetpaulmorrishome”. Here is our progress so far: We will each be completing miles (some walking others cycling, running, climbing, swimming, kayaking, surfing and others just counting their steps etc), to completely travel the coast of the UK (12,429km/7723miles). We started over the Easter holidays. Each week we will let you know our accumulated distance and ask that you either sponsor us per mile or give a general donation. Report by: Miss Dowrick
