Page 4 March 2020 Chairman’s Report Hope you’re enjoying the great motoring weather. Unfortunately it’s not good for the farmers and people like us who are on tank water. Regarding the damage to our Clubrooms, the builders are expected to start on the 16th March with the work taking between three and five weeks. We will keep you updated. Veteran section is still going well, so if you have a veteran or would like to know more about them do go along and join John and the others. The Motorcycle meeting was again very well attended with 60 plus members and visitors. The guest speaker was Steve Raffills, who came with his family. They brought along a replica of a 1917 V Twin 8 valve Harley Davidson Board Racer, which is the 4th one Steve has built and they sell for $130000.00. Murray Firth's Vintage section was a little down on numbers due to members be- ing away, but they still had a interesting meeting. If you have a vintage or want to know more about them, do go and join them. Commercial section, although small, still have interesting meetings. Again, if you have a commercial or would like to learn more about them, go along and join John and his buddies. Mid Week Tourers are still finding great places to go and visit. Club Night we put on a BBQ before guest speaker Paul Stewart, who worked in the Motorcycle Industry, take the stage. Paul told us about the motorcycle shops he had worked for from Piopio to Auckland from the 1960's up to 5 years ago. Sunday 1st March was the Brit and Euro Classic Car Show held at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. I manned our Branch stand from 9:30 am till closing at 4:00pm. This was the 5th show and every year it gets bigger. This year saw 1100 entries. We had around 20 motorcycles on display, ranging from vintage BSA, Norton, and Velocette, 1963 Vespa, 50's and 60's Triumph's, ‘60 to 70's BSA, Nortons, Ducati's and a breathtaking 1000 cc Vincent Norton. The crowds were massive and it’s thought this event is one of the biggest in Australasia. Coming up in March, Sunday 15 - Bert Cuthbertson Motorcycle Rally Sunday 22 - Karaka Vintage Day Sunday 29 - Branch Gymkhana Event Hope to see you out and about on runs and rallies and at the clubroom events. Keep those 2, 3 and 4 wheels turning safely. Martin Spicer
March 2020 Page 5 Club Captain’s Report Oh my goodness, still no rain. Our poor farm looks like a desert, not a sign of green anywhere. But that aside, it has been perfect weather for driving and riding the hi-ways and bi-ways of New Zealand. February started with the Veteran Rally which John Stokes had plotted in and around the lovely Waiuku and Awhitu areas. It was pleasing to see a large number of lovely old girls parked up on display before heading off. A number of members of the public popped along for a look and I noticed a post and a few photos of some of the cars on facebook that evening. It ended with a convivial luncheon at the Waiuku Cossie Club. The Motorcycle section had another great turn out for their meeting, some 60 plus members, coming along to listen to Steve Raffills and to see his Harley Da- vidson Board Racer. The Mid Week Tourers continue to have good attendance at their monthly runs. A smaller number were in attendance for the Vintage Section meeting, but the Art Deco Rally may well have impacted on those numbers. If you are interest- ed in this era, please do come along to their monthly Saturday meetings. A lot of interesting things are discussed. February’s Club Night saw a smaller turnout of numbers, despite us putting on a sausage sizzle, complete with onions and coleslaw, plus an ice-cream for des- sert. Was this because the speaker was speaking on the Motorcycle Industry? It was an interesting talk, especially as the speaker, Paul Stewart, had started his career in Piopio and gradually worked his way up in the industry. Sunday 1 March was the club run, or should I say, club non run? Only 4 turned out, so I cancelled this. Those who attended will be awarded 3 points each for coming out and of course these points will go towards the Points Trophy which is awarded at the AGM. Martin went to the Brit and Euro day, representing the Branch, being held at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. Apparently, a great day out for lovers of all vehicles both British and European. As Club Captain, I am now going to get on my “soap box” and ask you, my fellow Branch members, a few questions and give you some food for thought. You pay your annual subs, presumably to take part and enjoy the events creat- ed by the Branch. So why, in a membership of 650 members, do we get 30 out for Club Night and only 4 turn out for a Club Run? What do you want? This is your Branch and it does take time to arrange things. Our Entertainment Officer tries and finds interesting people to entertain you at Club Night. Yes, the sub- ject may not be of particular interest (I get totally lost with all the jargon used when people talk about rebuilding engines etc.), but I always get something from that speaker. An interesting point was made by Paul Stewart last month about him being asked by his family to put his life story down in writing, other- wise all the interesting people met along the way, the interesting things done, the funny stories, would be lost to future generations. And, I believe this can be said of all the speakers who visit our Branch. Everyone has a story to tell and share. So please, do think about how much effort it takes to get someone along, to give their time free of charge, to entertain you and thus support your Branch. If you don’t like the speakers we get then please feel free to give a member of the Committee a call, or send an email to myself and Martin, with
Page 6 March 2020 Club Captain’s Report Contd... Ideas of people you would like to come along and listen to. Branch events take quite a bit of time to plan and the Club Run for February/ March was no exception. As well as plotting the route and checking it a cou- ple of times, there was the planning of getting the Museum opening for us over a weekend, which they only do by appointment. So it was rather embarrassing to have to give them a call on the Sunday morning and call the whole thing off. This is your Branch, so please, TAKE PART in what is on offer. It is a once a month commitment for a Club Run and a once a month commitment for Club Night. Not a lot really is it? On another note, have any of you who have had years of enjoyment taking part in the Mid Week Tourers events, actually given some thought to taking over the organising of the “Southern Route” so Norm & Pat Dewhurst can re- tire? Yes, places of interest are usually found to visit and I am sure Norm & Pat would help with some useful suggestions initially to get you on the road so to speak. Please give this some serious consideration. Two or even three couples could share the task, therefore it is not so onerous. If no-one takes the baton up, then this wonderfully supported mid week monthly event will no longer go ahead. Lastly, has anyone given Val a call to see what is involved in becoming our new Bulletin Editor? It doesn’t take too much time and Val will be there to guide you through for a couple of months. Again, please give this position seri- ous consideration. Val has been our Editor for 17 years and would like to hand the job over for someone else to do. Some dates to keep in mind for this month: Sunday 15 March – Bert Cuthbertson Motorcycle Rally Saturday 21 March – Motorcycle Section Meeting Sunday 22 March – Karaka Vintage Day (always a good day out and we are looking for members to put their vehicles on display. Martin will have a Branch stand there). Sunday 29 March – Branch Gymkhana – Lots of fun to be had by everyone, two, three and four wheelers. See you out and about Lynda Spicer
March 2020 Page 7 Library Notes It has been a reasonably quiet time in recent weeks in the library, with not so many ‘new’ additions to our collection coming in. As is well known we are for- ever looking for more storage space and it’s times like this that we use for re- arranging the shelves to utilise what space we do have in the best possible way. In the new millennium, (back in the year 2000) a new Library loan book register was initiated. That’s now twenty years ago and it is interesting to look back at that recorded history of our book lending. In the intervening time, some 1321 books have been taken out of the Library on loan to our members. That’s quite a lot of reading one way and another. It means that those members have no doubt read and absorbed a great deal about the history of motoring and all that that represents. Arithmetically, it equates to 5.7 books per month or just over one book per week, but measured over the number of members we have in our Branch, it means that only a minority of our members make use of the books and materi- al that we have at our disposal. Looking through the names of the borrowers down the years brings back mem- ories of members who have passed on, but also there are several who were borrowing books twenty years ago and who are still avid readers and borrow- ers. However, what is even more readily apparent, is that the same names keep cropping up, or in other words the folk who are borrowing books regularly are a relatively small part of our Branch. This begs the question as to what we as a Library team can do to bring more members into the group who are getting greater fulfilment from their interest in old vehicles by reading more about them. If you have never borrowed a book from the Library, but would like to, the team would like to invite you to come in and select your first book and also, if you have any idea which you think could improve our lending performance, please let us know. Come and visit any Thursday morning from 9:00a.m. or you can contact us at: cdwood@xtra.co.nz Chris Wood and the Library Team:—Owen Hayward, Colin Bott, Barry Birchall, John Stokes & Barry Robert.
Page 8 March 2020 Motorcycle Notes Upon arriving at the Clubrooms for the February meeting found our guest speak- er, Steve Raffills, wife Linda and their four sons Andy, Ben, Joe and Jem, along with David Morley who had brought Steve's Harley Davidson Board racer in his van. The Harley was brought into the Clubrooms and set it up in the centre of the floor. Outside were twelve motorcycles in the car park, ranging from a 60's Vespa, 1928 and ‘29 Ariels, BSA sidecar outfit, Army Royal Enfield, Triumphs, Ja- wa, Harleys and Velocettes and sixty plus members in attendance. A number of our members were away, taking part in the Waikato three day Summer Tour. Visitors: The UK President of the Velocette Club - Rodger & Jane Franklin, Stuart & Ashley Moffat from Blenheim and Chris Read from Rarotonga. Reports: Martin reported on last month's club run, on the recent Wellington Bi- Annual Motorcycle Rally and last months Branch Veteran rally. Keith Ballagh told us about the recent Velocette Rally held in Taranaki. Graeme Crawley told us about the up coming Ariel Rally being held in the South Island. Coming Up: Sunday 15 March—Bert Cuthbertson Rally, starting from the Jolly Farmer Drury at 12 noon and finishing at Stuart Metch's home (plotter) in Bombay for afternoon tea and a chance to look over Stuart's motorcycle collection. Saturday 21 March—Motorcycle meeting - speaker to be confirmed. Sunday 22 March—Karaka Vintage day, which is a great day out. Do come along and support our Branch and bring your motorcycle. Contact Martin for information. Sunday 29 March—Branch Gymkhana day, come along and ride your motorcy- cle and test your riding skills. General Business: Member Dave Warren came to say goodbye to us, as he and Ilona are moving to Oxford in the Canterbury area very soon. Will miss seeing your amazing re- stored motorcycle’s Dave. We wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you at the next National Motorcycle Rally. Speaker: Steve Raffills, with the help of wife Linda and sons Andy, Ben, Joe and Jem, run a successful business building replica Harley Davidson Board Racing motorcycles. The racer on display was the 4th one built and will soon be on its way to London UK to its new owner. These bikes are truly a work of art and surely are worth the price of $130,000. The engine is a 1000 cc V twin with 8 valves, has a very low engine compression ratio of 4.75. Steve uses original flywheels then buys the best conrods and pistons, casts the crankcases then machines them. Steve pours molten cast iron into his all in one head and barrel moulds and machines them. He makes the valves and rockers and even makes the spoke nipples and the tire valves. There isn't a clutch or gearbox or brakes. Steve makes the frame and forks and wheel hubs. Steve told us how he made the rotary swaging tools used to form round steel tube into a taper for the forks. These motorcycles will do 100 mph, like they did in the 1920's. We were shown a video of the motorcy- cle being started up for the first time, very loud as there are no exhaust pipes. The video showed Steve riding along Muriwai Beach on the Harley. Steve brought along samples of engine and frame bits and various jigs for us to look at.
March 2020 Page 9 Motorcycle Notes Contd... Steve and family stayed around for an hour after the meeting finished and chattered to the members. Thank you Steve, Linda and boys for coming to talk to us and showing us your great creation of a Harley Board Racer. Page 10 March 2020 Entertainment Notes Paul Stewart was the guest speaker for the February Club Night and has given almost his entire working life to the Motorcycle industry, well over 40 years. He started and qualified as an Auto Machinist before working as a motorcycle me- chanic on all brands, moving to sales and as a dealer co-coordinator/supervisor. The last 24 years were with Honda NZ. Paul is the President of the Auckland Mo- torcycle Club and was impressed with our clubrooms. Paul gave a very good assessment of the demise of the British Motorcycle indus- try, which he believes was entirely avoidable as Britain had the technology to match the Japanese at that time, but ignored the threat of clever engineering and fine machining. In his work with the dealerships, he experienced many incidents and personali- ties and told some great stories. The advent of the importing of used cars dealt a severe blow to motorcycle sales, as many potential purchases were lost to RX7 Mazda, sporty Toyota and others. The survival of many dealerships is owed to the farm bike which transformed farming. The capital costs of being a dealer is now huge. Paul said that to start a dealership now would require about one million dollars. Only a quarter of the original Auckland dealers have survived. While the motorcycle members did not give the support he deserved, those that were there engaged with Paul, sharing their experiences and showed he was a good choice. Club Night for Thursday 26 March will be a speaker talking on Tyres. Robin Elliott
March 2020 Page 11 Commercial Notes The February meeting of our little section received an apology from Don John- ston, who took off for the South Island straight after the Art-Deco weekend. We learned that Lindsay Whittle has his FGK 30 Morris all road legal now after a fair bit of drama with certification. The truck, set up as a tow truck and coming in at under 3,500 Kg’s and never likely to carry anything, still required a hub odometer. Nobody has been more sceptical than me over the merits of EV vehicles, par- ticularly with regard to towing capabilities. A recent U tube video sent to me, has dispelled many of those apprehensions. The “specs” for this vehicle are truly amazing, 0 to 100 Km/h in just three seconds, an electric motor at each wheel, no higher than the axle line, a range of 640 kilometres. There will be two models, an SUV, and the world’s first Ute. Rivian Automotive Inc., was founded by R J Scaringe and operates from a Mitsubishi Motors Corp. Plant, bought years ago by Scaringe. Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos has ordered 100,000 units, custom built for prime deliveries, already investing $700 million (US) into the deal. Ford Motor Co. have said they will invest $500 mil- lion and Cox Automotive $350 million, and all this be- fore the first Rivian rolls off the assembly line later this year. It took nine years for Tesla to produce 100,000 cars! If you are able to Google Rivian, do so, you will be pleasantly surprised, and the February- March newsletter of the Fed- eration of Motoring Clubs has an interesting article on the number of countries requiring new cars to be low, or emission free by 2040, but our government has no intention of imposing similar restrictions, because N.Z. is too far behind other countries in updating its vehicle fleet, and those lower in- come Kiwis, (read “most of us”) not able to afford new or used electric vehi- cles, would be left with too few mobility options. I guess our historic vehicles are safe for a while yet! Keep “M” Rolling John Campbell
Page 12 March 2020 Mid Week Tourers Numbers were a little down on last months run to the West Lynn Gardens, but the quality of people and vehicles was very evident. Ten cars, including Barry & Nicola Birchall in their big veteran Cadillac and Lionel & Mary Rogers in their 1972 Ferrari. If one didn’t see it coming, you certainly heard it. Good to see Max Jamieson out again, for most of last year he had been working on the Delage motor. At least three visitors, Tony Mihaljevich from Perth and Penny Firth’s sister Kate, from the UK. (Sorry, I didn’t get to say hello). The route took us through Oratia, along the Scenic Drive for a short spell and a couple of lovely lanes high up in Titirangi, before descending a bit to our destination. Just a short run this time. The West Lynn Garden is in an old quarry, 2.5 acres, developed and run by a community group of volunteers. Lots of paths, one needs the map to find eve- rything, a butterfly house and ample parking. We all gathered for lunch in the “Palm Circle” and had a good time chatting together before individuals ex- plored the surrounds. Coming Events: Wednesday 11 March: Too late, will be all over by now.. Wednesday 22 April: Note change of day, 4th. Wednesday this month. Kelvin Hawke is taking us to a collection in Silverdale. Includes cars and motorcycles. Starts from The Warehouse car park, Westgate, 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. de- parture. BYO everything. Wednesday 20 May: To be confirmed, but it is expected to be a southern (Drury) start for a run that will include an optional lap or two on the Pukekohe Raceway. Which might bring us to the end of the current monthly Mid-week Tourer’s Runs. They will continue, rest assured, but without a team co-ordinator, they might not be every month. Drive safely and enjoy the countryside. The Dewdrops & the Mid-Week Team Ph: (09) 232 0245 or email dewdrops@xtra.co.nz
March 2020 Page 13 Vintage Notes With some of our members at Art Deco, our numbers were down slightly, but the conversations were lively. Wayne Roberts’ Velie will soon be back on the road after a full engine rebuild, should be right for the next 100 years. Neville Holland’s Chev had a bit of engine noise which he found and cured. Trouble is, it has now made it possible to hear another, which is going to involve deeper investigation. There was some discussion over unsympathetic WoF inspectors failing cars for superficial reasons, so it is best to take your vehicle to your own local garage mechanic who has some empathy with old vehicles. Chris Wood has had new rims made by Veter- an Car Rims in Christchurch for his 1924 Austin 20 and is delighted with their workmanship. Norm Dewhurst is wanting to ‘declutter’ and would like to see both his historic 1930 Chev van and his Austin 7 Special go to someone who would finish them. New project anyone? As at 22 February the entries for the Vintage Muster are rather disappointing, but as entries haven’t closed yet we are hoping for a late rush. We are going to feature a member’s vehicle with its history in this column each month so to start, here is John Towers with his Chev. 1929 Chev—John Towers “Early this year I had the privilege of taking over the restoration of a 1929 Chev coupe started by my very good friend, the late Howard Porteous. The car started life in Invercargill, being sold new by A Russell and Company. It was owned by Stan Butler of Gore for many years and once served as a display car for him in the Sign Shop. Howard purchased it from Grant Jolly of Blenheim in 2002 in a very sad state of repair. He restored the body to original specs using the original panels as patterns. The mechanicals were up-graded to make it suitable for an amputee, as Howard had lost his left arm. A brief description of the upgrades follows. A 1953 Blue Flame motor was fitted with two Stromberg carburettors and an automatic transmission 700 R4 from a 1984 Chev, driving a rear diff from a 1994 Mazda. Hydraulic brakes were then fitted to the 17” wire wheels from a 1934 Chev. My problem was, do I return the car to original or put a dummy gear stick in it and retain the upgrades? After much debate at our Vintage car meeting, the general consensus was to leave the upgrade as it is, as a tribute to Howard. The remaining restoration is for upholstery, which I will do in white leather and the roof panel in canvas; bleed the brakes and a few other bits and bobs such as step plates with boot scrapers etc. There are rather innova- tive ideas in the coupe, such as when the boot is opened, the light shines a per- fect CHEV image on the floor. When the final restoration is complete and a Vin obtained, I’ll be showing the guys at the Vintage Car Club the results”. Thank you John for your article. Murray & Penny Firth

Page 16 March 2020 Secretary’s Notes It is now only 9 months until the Vero Festival of Motoring in the Taranaki area. Entry Forms will be available soon, note they will NOT be distributed to every member through Beaded Wheels. I will ensure copies are available at the Clubrooms but you will able to get a soft copy by dropping me a note. This promises to be a great week so plan to be there! Our AGM will soon be here in June, please give thought to how you see the Club running, both at a Branch level and Nationally. It takes a group of people with a range of skills to run the Branch at Committee level, some with specialised skills such as our treasurer Ian, some with a particular area of interest, those with the time to organise events and someone to make sure we do what we need to at the right time. Although my day job currently takes up more of my time than it should, I enjoy being involved and am very keen to see us evolve in the com- ing years so we are still relevant and top of mind for those whose interest is "old vehicles" when they look for a club to join. We have a large membership, with the more active membership getting a lot out of attending the wide variety of events held. I urge you all to consider what you enjoy in the Branch, what pushes your buttons and what you can give back. This doesn't necessarily mean being on Committee, there are a number of non committee positions currently needing new faces - VIC Officer, Bulletin Editor, Mid Week Tourer Co-Ordinator. There are people willing to help you in these roles and show you the ropes. If you know of someone who would make a great speaker, or you hear someone speak at another function, all it takes is a phone call with their details to the Entertainment Officer and we have a Clubnight ticked off. If you think you can add value on Committee or know of someone you think would, please have a chat with them. Want to help by organising a club run or event? Call the Club Captain. We always need a mixture of new blood and ideas along with experience for stability. We should not rely on people staying in roles for extended periods of time, succession plans are important. Lastly, I have a couple of emails expressing interest in a “back road” tour to Lev- in for Easter. I am still to finalise this, so please let me know if you are considering joining us. Likely at present to leave Auckland Wednesday morning, with the overnight stop possibly somewhere in the King Country region, visiting the Waiouru Military Museum on Thursday with an overnight stop in Taihape and mo- toring onto Levin Good Friday morning. As the name would suggest, the objec- tive is to avoid the main highways and enjoy the scenery. Tracey Winterbottom
March 2020 Page 17 Veteran Notes The Branch Veteran Rally attracted about eighteen entrants to the start at the agricultural museum in Waiuku. The only new restoration noted was Peter Al- derdice's 1917 Harley Davidson. All other entrants were seasoned veteran run attendees. Model T Fords dominated numerically, as is usually the case. Other entrants included Cadillac, De Dion Bouton, Renault, Talbot, Perry, Rover and Dodge. “Out of town” Branch support came from Doug & Ann Hamilton in the 1904 Cadillac, with Leon & Brendda Salt as crew. Mention should also be made of Monty and Pauline Scarborough, who made the trip from Kaiaua. It was good to see long time member and Charabanc associate Doug Pinker back on the Charabanc. The two routes about 27 miles for the short and just under 40 for the long trav- elled via back roads, where possible, up the Awhitu Peninsula. Travelling through the Taurangaruru, Kohekohe, Waipipi and Te Toro areas before head- ing back to Waiuku for lunch at the Cosmopolitan Club. The plotter’s concerns about potential heavy traffic and overtaking difficulties on the main Awhitu road didn't materialise. David Adams on the long route check got about sev- en of the ten entrants on this route, so it was assumed that some of the others followed the short route. There was some concern that Peter Alderdice had broken down on the Harley, but he turned up to tell us he had gone further up the Peninsula than instructed, turned round and retraced his route. He had no instruction rollers on the Harley, which was on its first serious run since restoration and he is very satisfied. Because of this, he was given the long route Trophy and Barry Birchall got the short route Trophy in the 1905 De Dion Bouton. March 2020 Page 23 Vero International Festival of Motoring COUNTDOWN TO VERO INTERNATIONAL 9 Months to go January 17 to 22, 2021 Check out the Website or Facebook page. www.historicmotoring.co.nz For a week in January 2021, New Plymouth City and the Taranaki district is going to be the place to be for any lover of old cars, trucks or motorcycles. Our team has put together a fantastic event to suit all types of vehicles from the 19th century up to 1990. Our festival village is the base for the week and will have a range of great quality food, drink and entertainment and the roads are made for motoring. The world famous Festival of Lights is taking place at Pukekura Park, which is right alongside the festival village and coin- cides with the festival. All we need now is you – our entrants, the people who have been the sole reason for us putting the festival together. So mark the dates on your calen- dar 17th-21st Jan 2021, and register your interest to receive emails and stay updated with event planning. Now is the time to get together with your mo- toring friends to plan your journey to and from Taranaki – be it from elsewhere in New Zealand, or anywhere in the world. Head out to your workshop now and get that “almost there” project back on the road by 2021 and we can’t wait to meet you in Taranaki!
