Monthly Update Diana Augustine, Executive Secretary COMMUNITY LINK march 2019 CONGRATULATIONS EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH Elisa Mohr, Admin. Asst. Senior Center We congratulate Elisa Mohr as our March Employee of the Month. Elisa came to the City to serve as a volunteer in 2017 assisting Cheri Kuczma, our Senior Coordinator with our Senior Luncheon program. In 2019, Elisa was appointed to a permanent part-time Administrative Assistant as our Senior Program now encompasses senior residents of Macedonia, Northfield Village and Sagamore Hills. Members range from newly retired to 100 years old! Over 150 lunches are served weekly. In addition, we have launched the senior home delivery luncheon program for those unable to attend. Elisa is one of those employees always eager to work. Always willing to go above and beyond to help someone. Her work ethic and enthusiasm is commendable. Elisa arrives well before to set up for the morning coffee group or to handle prep work for our senior lunches and is one that can always be counted on to do an outstanding job. “The Senior Center has certainly become a ‘hub’ for our Senior residents,” says Elisa. Besides Bingo, members can enjoy live entertainment, crafts, activities, games and clinics on safety, Medicare, health to name a few. We would be remiss if we did not mention the holidays as there are Halloween Parties, Christmas gatherings, Valentine’s Day and Easter to orchestrate as all enjoy the camaraderie shared. Elisa thoroughly enjoys her job as reflected in her smile. Just talking about it makes her face light up. Elisa stated, “She has grown close to all of the seniors, they have such wonderful stories to tell.” In Elisa’s spare time, she loves to cook, especially Italian cuisine. She enjoys gardening and just working out in the yard. Her real love is talking walks. Elisa said a good walk just makes you feel alive and loves being close to nature. Elisa lives in Macedonia; has a son Michael, who is married and is very blessed with two grandchildren, Angelina age 13, and 3 year-old grandson, Michael. We thank Elisa for her dedication and her commitment to the City. The City of F O U N D E D 19 0 5 Macedonia 2 The Crossroads of Northeast Ohio

Council News COMMUNITY LINK march 2019 NOTES FROM YOUR CITY COUNCIL… Council meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month. Council’s upcoming schedule is as follows: • Thursday, March 14 at 7:30 PM. Finance chair Kevin Bilkie (kbilkie@macedonia.oh.us) will be available before the meeting at 6:30 to speak with residents. • Thursday, March 28 at 7:30 PM. Council president Jan Tulley (jtulley@macedonia.oh.us) will be available before the meeting at 6:30 to speak with residents. If you cannot attend council meetings, you can view them or read the minutes online by going to the city Web site and then Departments – City Council – Council Minutes or going directly to this page: http://www.macedonia.oh.us/council-agendaminutesvideo/ The Continuing Story of Council 1919 Last month we reviewed the council minutes from the beginning of the year 1919 to see what council was doing 100 years ago. In January a budget was passed and February the annexation of part of Twinsburg Township was brought up. It was the residents of the section of the Township (the north-west corner of the Township, called “The Dell District”) who requested annexation into Macedonia Village. Upon further review of the 1919 minutes it was determined that local government worked extremely slowly – if you can imagine. The minutes were read up through February 1921 – two years after the annexation proposal – and the annexation still hadn’t been completed. The request had to go through many county and state offices before it was finalized. We still haven’t seen a map of the annexation but with some deductive reasoning, we’ve decided that the land in question is now part of Macedonia and includes everything to the east of Shepard Road. That’s pretty fortunate for Macedonia, considering that land now encompasses what we know as Longwood Park and many homes. Here are some highlights from the March 1919 through February 1921 Council meetings: • A constant topic of discussion for council is the erection of light poles throughout the community, and residents being able to bring electricity to their homes. The Village wasn’t in charge of this utility but it did need to facilitate the means by which the Northern Ohio Traction & Light Company could get them installed and where. • Another huge topic at this time was roads. Council was considering the placement of new roads but also a lot of discussion was had about what roads needed repairing or widening, and the costs thereof. Several times throughout the year residents would come to meetings to ask the council to please fix their road. At one meeting, a resident came to protest the building of a new road past his property as it would disrupt the trees in his yard. • At the June 13th meeting in 1919, it was decided that work would be suspended on all roads until there was money. A special meeting was called on June 17 to decide on putting up a bond issue to voters, asking for $25,000 for roads and $5,000 for a city hall building. According to the site Measuring Worth, a $30,000 project in 1919 would have an economic cost of $7,390,000 today. continued on the next page The City of F O U N D E D 19 0 5 Macedonia 6 The Crossroads of Northeast Ohio
Council News COMMUNITY LINK march 2019 • Also at the June 13th meeting, It was determined that the High School Dancing Class shall be charged $1 per night for use of the city’s existing meeting hall. • There is much talk at this time of turning “the Old Church” into a city hall. At the May 13th, 1919 council meeting, “A petition was presented by tax payers” that the Old Church be “put in shape” for a new city hall. Initial cost estimates for converting the church was $2200, but later estimated to be $5000. By February 1921, it was decided that the city would pay for materials to build the new city hall, but the labor itself would be donated. • Council member Chamberlain was asked to “find out the attitude of the residents of The Dell District” (the part of Twinsburg Township asking to be annexed) to donating labor to improve Town Line Road. • Not all labor was to be donated, however – council set the rates it would pay for labor on upcoming road projects to 80 cents/hour for “team labor” (presumably, workers with horses) and 40 cents/hour for general labor. • Council was shopping around for banks in February of 1920. They had three bids for banks offering different interest rates on deposits – 4%, 4.61% and 4.65%. Council chose the highest interest rate, from Twinsburg Bank, for its deposits. • In May of 1920, a resolution was passed to borrow $600 for “fire protection” – a new chemical engine and alarm system. The Chemical Engine was purchased and delivered quite quickly, but the alarm system took much longer. There was a bell at the Old Church that could be restored and then hooked up to the new electricity to be used as an alarm, but by February of 1921 it had yet to be operable. Council also approved the renting of a garage for $1.50/month in which to store the new engine. This was the formation of Macedonia’s Fire Department. (Example of 1920s-era chemical engine. Not actual Macedonia engine.) • At the end of the September 7th, 1920 meeting, Mayor Brooks presented his letter of resignation – seemingly without prior knowledge of any council members, as the previous action in the meeting was to assign Mayor Brooks to a committee. By the next meeting in October, council president Reed is now acting mayor and a new council member has been appointed. • In November of 1920, Lt. Deputy Oviatt from the sheriff’s department asked council to help with the current “hydrophobia” (rabies) problem by requiring all dogs to be muzzled or contained for 30 days. A resolution was passed as such, also with the caveat that all dogs not muzzled or contained will be shot. • In February of 1921, a resident came to council presenting a bill for $50 to the village, for sheep that had been killed by dogs. Council approved paying this bill. The City of F O U N D E D 19 0 5 Macedonia 7 The Crossroads of Northeast Ohio
Fire Department Brian Ripley, Acting Fire Chief COMMUNITY LINK march 2019 CHANGE YOUR SMOKE DETECTOR BATTERIES WHEN YOU “SPRING FORWARD” It is a good habit to form. If you use battery-powered smoke detectors in your home or business, change the batteries each spring and fall as you turn your clocks forward or back when Daylight Saving Time starts and ends. No, there is nothing magical about doing these tasks at the same time – it’s just an excellent way to link the tasks in your memory and avoid having a dead smoke detector. The last thing you want is to find out your batteries are dead by having a fire in your home or office and the detector fails to warn you! It is recommended that the battery in every smoke detector be changed at least annually. If you did not change them at the last time change, then you definitely want to do so at the next change. By the way, most of us rely on mobile devices whose clocks change automatically when the time changes. The challenge we face is remembering all of the other clocks that need to be changed manually. Here are a few that we sometimes overlook: • Microwave/oven clocks • Coffeemaker clocks • Programmable thermostat clocks • Car radio clocks • Alarm clocks • Mantel clocks • Wristwatches (yes, some folks still wear them!) Police Department Jon Golden, Chief COMMUNITY LINK march 2019 WHY SPRING DRIVING IS DANGEROUS With winter fading into the background and better weather all around, you'd think the roads would finally be safe again. This is not always the case. Rainy days and flooding Spring rain brings slippery road conditions and flooding. According to the Federal Highway Administration, rain was a culprit of 46 percent of all weather-related crashes from 2005 to 2014, and wet pavement in general accounted for 73 percent. What makes rain and wet pavement so dangerous? For one, slippery roads reduce your car's handling and increase the distance it takes to stop (up to 4 times normal stopping distance). Big puddles can also cut down on tire traction and could lead to hydroplaning. Animal activity Animals are incredibly active during the spring. Some are emerging from hibernation, and others are entering mating season. This could mean that more animals are crossing streets and roaming around. Many animals, especially deer, are most active at dawn or dusk. More bicycles on the road Spring also brings cyclists out of hibernation. Driving alongside cyclists can make traffic maneuvers, from turning right to parallel parking, more dangerous. SPRING DRIVING SAFETY TIPS • Check your lights: Since spring rain hinders driving visibility, make sure all your lights work, including headlights, taillights, backup lights, turn signals, parking lights, and brake lights. • Replace your wiper blades: Worn-out wiper blades may not be up to the task of clearing water away from your windshield. Check your wiper blades and replace them if necessary (usually once a year). • Check your tire pressure: Harsh winter weather can deflate your tires. Make sure you have enough air in them once spring rolls around. (As a bonus, proper tire pressure can also help you increase your mpg.) • Slow down and drive carefully: The first few rainy days of spring can produce exceptionally slippery roads due to oil and other leaked fluids mixing with rainwater, so slow down and increase your stopping distance when it is raining. • Keep your eyes peeled for bad road conditions: Remember that harsh winter weather breeds potholes and other driving obstacles.
