CORONADO CAYS YACHT CLUB www.ccyc.org ISSUE 1 APRIL NAVIGATOR MAGAZINE 2021 From the Pilothouse Commodore Dave Murree B ring 2021 in with a bang, literally. Saturday, May 1st is our Opening Day! The cannon will fire and we will welcome in the 2021 CCYC yachting season. Given the toll that the COVID 19 pandemic has had on many of the San Diego Area Yacht Clubs, we may likely be one of the few Clubs hosting an in person opening day this spring. We have plenty of outdoor space to use and we are going to use it! To that end, we have started to see club usage increase significantly. We have taken several polls during our busy times in the dining room and guess what? More than 90% of those visiting the Club have received one vaccination and more than 70% have received two! Fast forward to opening day and I expect near 100% vaccination of our members. We'll have our own herd immunity. We have more than 40 new members who have joined since our last opening day in 2019. Opening Day is one of those events you should try not to miss! I hope that you all join us at the club for an amazing experience. We'll start the day off with a boat parade, organized by our Fleet Captain, Lance Rogers. You can dress your boat in the traditional manner or theme it up. This year's theme is “Treasure Island”! Lance and his team will be offering awards for the Best Dressed Power Boat, Sail Boat, Electric Boat and Dinghy. Our Port Captain, Van Peterson, will also host a Best Dock Competition. So please hoist those flags and hang the champagne to show off your pier and your club! Don't forget your CCYC Burgee. Finally, our C-Gulls Captain, Frances Howdyshell, will host a best hat competition. We will follow the ceremony with a full reception and enjoy DJ music on the lawn. Please remember, this is an open event. So if you have any family or friends who might consider joining the club, this is a great opportunity to see us at our finest. Come one, come all to Coronado Cays Yacht Club’s 49th Annual Opening Day!

THE NAVIGATOR 5 I hope you had the opportunity to enjoy all the re-openings and events that we were able to host at the club in March. Once the County moved to the RED Tier we were able to open the club for indoor dining and more! Starting on On March 17th we celebrated St Paddy’s Day with drink and dinner specials and had the return of our Wednesday night Beer Can Sailing races, C-Gulls hosted their Regalia and members had a wonderful time enjoying seeing friends again for the first time in a long time. If you haven’t made it to the club lately, the added wind breaks and the new heaters on the patio have created two comfortable areas to sit and enjoy the club and watch sail boat racing. We’ve enclosed the area behind the flag poles for our outside bar, complete with a large screen TV, fire pit, outdoor furniture, and extra tables and chairs. We started our 2021 live music schedule with dinner music by Sue Shirey and Brian, Brian, and Mike played on our patio for a Saturday afternoon of fun. By now you should have received the updated calendar of music and events for the year. With the club open indoors, we’ll be back to hosting live music in the Burgee Bar. While we’ll need to watch the occupancy levels, I’m sure we will all have a wonderful time. We will continue to refine our events and keep the club open and safe for our members to enjoy. Finally, we will be updating our menu in April. Keep an eye out for some new items and the return of some old favorites we’re bringing back! We have added more healthy items as well as some comfort food, please let the staff know what you think. Looking forward to seeing you at the club! From the Quarter Deck Vice Commodore Jerry Rosenbusch

8 THE NAVIGATOR Greetings, Marina Tenants! O pening Day, May 1st, is fast approaching! To celebrate this time-honored event, we are asking all marina tenants to dress your boats in all their finery by April 15th. This year's theme is Treasure Island, so you have a choice to dress your boat in traditional fashion or have a little fun with this year's theme. If you are out of town or unable to dress your boat yourself, please contact me, Van Peterson, or your Dock Captain. We will be available to give you a hand. CCYC is striving for 100% participation this year to celebrate the return of our Club's Opening Day Ceremonies. We will be holding a "Best Dressed Dock" competition and each dock will be judged on participation, proper display of flags and creativity. The winner of the dock competition will be announced at Opening Day Ceremonies and a prize will be awarded to the Best Dressed Dock. Keep your eyes posted for a Dock Competition flyer. If you need to acquire an international signal flags set, they are available for purchase at the front desk. The flag sets are Taylor Made 30' long and are priced at $26.50 each. In addition, please check the proper size and condition of your boats Club Burgee flag. I have noticed a few tired, undersized CCYC burgees flying in our marina. New Burgee flags are also available for purchase at the front desk. As you may have noticed, boating season is upon us. Calls come in daily requesting the use of our guest dock or any open slips. As a courtesy, if you are going to take your boat out of the marina (for whatever reason) for more than 48 hours, please contact me with your trip details so that I can offer your vacant slip to incoming guests. If you fail to follow this protocol, which, by the way, is stipulated in your Marina Rules and Regulations, don't be surprised if there is a boat in your slip upon your return. If this occurs, plan to anchor in the basin until the guests' scheduled departure date. Safe and happy boating to all! Let's make this year spectacular! Port Captain Van Peterson

10 THE NAVIGATOR Hello Mates! O nce again 20 CCYC Members and guests took to the Coronado Golf Course to play a Best Ball Scramble Tournament. Indeed everyone took their best shots at that annoying little ball….why don’t they just fly straight??? The rain stayed away until the last few holes and fun goodie bags were distributed to all at the 18th hole. Foursomes where drawn from registered twosomes and that created some great combinations! Old friends of long ago, pre-Covid days, met again and new Members got a chance to get connected with others for some good times and drinks afterwards. The lowest scramble score-winning foursome was: Ramon Navarro Tim Ragus Sandy Brough Jim Robinson The closest-to-the-pin winner was: Keith Kim The longest Women’s drive winner was: Trish Graisy The longest Men’s drive winner was: Bart Schubert Congrats to all!! Stay tuned for the results of the April 3rd On-Water Scavenger hunt! Go Team! All Hands on Deck Power Captain Rome Ventura

12 THE NAVIGATOR THE NAVIGATOR 12 Regalia News T he word “regalia” originated from the word “regal”, to describe a king or queen. Regalia, in this context, referred to the dress and decoration that belonged exclusively to a monarch. As an example, the Queen’s regalia at her coronation included her crown and her scepter. As a yacht club, our reference to regalia more closely resembles the military definition of the use of crests, braids, insignias and decorations of valor. Our CCYC Regalia includes crests, burgees, and clothing with our Club burgee design on them. Additionally, we carry our Club Officer’s flags and pins which indicate their rank on the board. You will notice that at our Opening Days ceremonies, our officers are in full regalia!! We extend that definition to include clothing with our Coronado Cays Yacht Club logo, including the burgee that is available for purchase to our members. You will often see those items of clothing with our club logo embroidered on them to include stars above the logo. This design is available to our Commodores, past and present. The color and number of stars will indicate that Commodores rank. We have broadened our definition of regalia to include clothing that is suitable to our “yachting” lifestyle. Thus, the name of our CCYC store— Regalia— available for viewing and purchase at the Bosun’s Locker. We, REGALIA, as an arm of C-Gulls, are an extension of our Corinthian spirit and are honored to provide our membership with choices with which to celebrate our Yacht Club and our nautical lifestyle!! Come shop with us and support C-Gulls and our beautiful Club!! C Sandy Shugert
13 THE NAVIGATOR THE NAVIGATOR 13 I had such a wonderful time Friday evening. I stopped by to see how our team members Kathy Schreiber and Cathy Kirkley were doing selling Regalia. We were joined by Merikay, (who by the way is looking wonderful and full of spunk and smiles) then, Jennifer Blair came along and pulled up a chair and Mary Youngman joined to say hello. It was so good to see everyone, get caught up and share some laughs. People I have not had the pleasure of seeing in a long time came through to say “hello.” And YES, we even made some sales! We are relying on our sales team for your support to keep Regalia going strong. So, if you want to get out, grab a friend, please look at the following dates and let me know when you can help. Our sales hours are following the club dining hours. We will be going back to our regular hours of 5 PM to 7 PM. You will be able to find us back in the Burgee Bar! Hooray! 4/9- Friday- need 2 people 4/14- Wednesday- need 2 people 4/16- Friday- need 2 people 4/21- Wednesday- need 2 people Our next C-Gulls meeting will be with Guest speaker Dave Murree on Wednesday, April 7th. So, reserve your place and let's get back to having some fun. I will bring my sign-up sheets for the coming months so you will have another opportunity to sign-up. We have really been through it this year with rescheduling and cancelling but, I am happy to say we are looking at fair winds and lifted restrictions in the coming weeks. Our last Quarterly Sales Meeting has been rescheduled to Wednesday, June 9th @ 4PM. Bring your calendars and join us for some friendship and fun! Be sure to read your April Navigator to keep up with the latest happening with C-Gulls, Regalia and our CCYC. C Debbie Goelz

16 THE NAVIGATOR Boat Appetit With Floating Chef Carole Jensen “Spring is nature’s way of saying, Let’s Party” Robin Williams H ello Spring! Let your joy burst forth like flowers in the Spring! How we all need this breath of fresh air. This month I have two of my most favorite light and fresh recipes- perfect for a warm Spring Barbecue with friends: Fried Burrata with truffle salt and Honey & Cedar Planked Moroccan style Salmon. These are two of my favorite recipes that I keep tucked away amongst 100’s of other treasured recipes in a very old and worn out recipe box that is secretly stowed aboard. Cedar Planked Salmon with Spice Rub Truthfully this recipe is a rendition of a similar version from a very well respected chef from Toronto: Bonnie Stern. She was the very first chef that I studied with and I can still hear her voice when I make this recipe. I suggest serving this alongside some seasonal Spring Asparagus- roasted with a drizzle of olive oil, salt and pepper. Simple and perfect for Spring! Ingredients: • 1 cedar Plank soaked for about 1 hours. (Order on Amazon and keep it - they hard to find these days) Soak before you are about to use. • 2 lbs salmon with skin • 3 tbsp olive oil • 6 tbsp brown sugar ( just over ⅓ cup) • 2 tbsp Hungarian Paprika • 2 tbsp Kosher salt • 2 tbsp coarse pepper • 2 tsp cumin Note: This makes enough for 2 salmons- I keep the leftovers in a ziplock baggie for next time. Directions: 1. Soak the salmon plank in cold water for up to 12 hours. (1 works too) 2. Score top side of salmon in about 2” diagonal strips- careful not to cut too deep or through to the skin 3. Rub/massage olive oil into salmon 4. Combine spice mix and rub into salmon. Let marinate for 15 minutes 5. Place salmon on the soaked plank. Place the whole plank with salmon on the rack of a barbecue. Close the lid. Cook for 15-20 minutes depending on thickness of salmon. Remove cover for last 5 minutes. Do not turn fish over. Check often- it will continue to cook even once off the barbecue- so do not overcook!!!!
THE NAVIGATOR 17 Notes about Salmon: Where to buy? Catalina Offshore https://catalinaop.com/ What to know: https://www.bestfishes.org.uk/is-scottish-farmed-atlantic-salmon-good-enough-to-eat/ I like to buy Salmon at Sprouts - You can buy their wild Sockeye Salmon fillet- it is the perfect size, and as it is much thinner- it cooks very quickly and has the flavor to stand up to this recipe. Truthfully if you can find Scottish farmed it is outstanding! My favorite market is in Escondido for Scottish Salmon and meat- not exactly on your way anywhere: Major Market One Outstanding Appetizer: Fried Burrata with truffle salt and honey I serve this over a plate of olive oil with painted and toasted sliced baguette or mini toasts (Boney’s carries them on top shelf above cheese). Ingredients: • ½ cup panko bread crumbs • 1 tsp Italian Seasoning • ½ tsp Paprika • ½ tsp crushed red-pepper flakes • ½ tsp pepper • Sprinkles of Truffle Salt for Topping- a must- and just a sprinkle!!! • 1 egg well beaten • Good quality honey to drizzle on top • 1 ball ( 6-8 ounces) cold burrata cheese- does not work well with buffalo Mozzarella- as the Burrata simply melts away- it is one of the most delicious things you will ever put inside your mouth! It is like an Italian mozzarella pouch filled with cream. (drooling just writing about it) • Fresh basil or edible flowers for garnish. • Excellent Olive Oil (Yes! Go to Vom Foss at the Ferry Landing) for both the plate the burrata will be served on and the Salmon Directions: 1. Mix together in a small bowl the bread crumbs, seasoning, pepper, Paprika red pepper flakes 2. In a separate bowl- whisk the egg 3. Heat about 2 tbsp olive in a small fry pan over medium heat 4. Dip the burrata into the beaten egg and then into the bread crumb mixture, pressing gently so the crumbs adhere to the cheese 5. Carefully place burrata into hot oil and cook for 2 -3 minutes only- rolling slightly so all sides are golden 6. Gently remove from the fry pan and arrange on a pretty plate that has about 3 tbsp olive oil, and garnished with basil and edible flowers. 7. Drizzle a little honey back and forth across the cheese and top with a little truffle salt! For Desert: Fresh seasonal berries, freshly chopped mint and chocolate balsamic vinegar! “Laughter is brightest where food is best”
18 THE NAVIGATOR APRIL 2021 BOCCE HOME OPENER ACTION WOWS FANS By Frank Youngman, 2nd Assistant Deputy Commissioner, CCYC Bocce Operations Long-denied bocce enthusiasts were ecstatic as they strapped in for the highly anticipated 2021 CCYC Balls of Destiny home opener Sunday, March 14th, the event affording a running start to the week of St. Patrick’s Day festivities. The newly constructed luxury skyboxes on the south end of the Sports Park were filled to capacity, but as a result of overly robust bar service, it was not noticed until the 2nd round that due to an apparent architectural oversight, there were no windows facing the courts! Alarmed patrons were then relocated to an area now referred to as the “Seagull Suites” on the roof, which afforded a panoramic view of the athletic excellence Winners Mel Blair and unfolding below. Marty Mischel Having completed a mandatory YouTube bocce tutorial, a range of veteran and rookie participants, including Ken Mischel and Carolyn Carswell, Darrell McNurlan and Johnny LaFata, Mel Blair and Marty Mischel, Denney and Sharon Bryan, R.G. Head and Charlie Martoglio, Mike Durgin and Peter, Marge and Homer Simpson, Randi and Aaron Maples, Brian and Deb Goelz, Frank and Mary Youngman, Dave and Kat Knapp, Kim and Pete Martin, Bob and Wendy Littleton, Gregg and Lauri Markovich, Craig and Patty Dever, Van Peterson and Leslie Hastings, and Paula and Greg Miller all contributed to the high drama that is a hallmark of the Balls of Destiny Tour. Shocking upsets resulted in several previous champions, cleaning out their lockers after succumbing to the teams of Brian and Deb Goelz and Gregg and Lauri Markovich in startling 9 to 5 and 9 to 6 lopsided victories, as the veterans were unable to get their balls in the same zip-code as the pallino. Gregg and Laurie then became an overpowering steamroller, dominating the brackets to advance to the championship round where they faced Mel Blair and Marty Mischel. Originally seen as easy money, Gregg and Lauri were relentless, taking the boys the distance with the back and forth scoring, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats (and roof) throughout the contest. Ultimately, despite penalty calls for sign-stealing, tripping, overt flatulence, and other violations of the personal conduct policy, the boys put the sprinkles on the cupcake with an 11-7 win. The closing ceremonies featured a Hootie and the Blowfish cover band serenading the crowd as the winners were awarded semi-precious gold championship medals, Balls of Destiny designer t-shirts, and replica $25 club gift cards. The champions were also eligible for free “Balls of Destiny” tattoos. This offer was declined. With a full season of bocce events expected, the next tour stop will be Sunday, April 11, commencing at 11:00 a.m. No screening of participants’ prior experience or ability will be conducted. Sign-ups will be in the passageway in Clubhouse, or contact fnyoungman@gmail.com. “Jameson whiskey………..The original Irish flu shot.”

Come on Shore and We Will Kill and Eat You All is the story of the cultural collision between Westerners and Maoris, told partly as a history of the complex and violent period of contact between Europeans and the Maoris and partly as the story of Christina Thompson's unlikely marriage to a Maori man. JUNE SELECTION Carry on, Mr. Bowditch - by Jean Lee Latham Nathaniel Bowditch grew up in a sailor’s world—Salem in the early days, when tall-masted ships from foreign ports crowded the wharves. But Nat didn’t promise to have the makings of a sailor; he was too physically small. Nat may have been slight of build, but no one guessed that he had the persistence and determination to master sea navigation in the days when men sailed only by “log, lead, and lookout.” Nat’s long hours of study and observation, collected in his famous work, The American Practical Navigator (also known as the “Sailors’ Bible”), stunned the sailing community and made him a New England hero.
