This month’s selection is Homeland Elegies, a novel by Ayad Akhtar.

A deeply personal work about hope and identity in a nation coming
apart at the seams, Homeland Elegies blends fact and fiction to tell an
epic story of belonging and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made.
Part family drama, part social essay, part picaresque adventure -- at
its heart, it is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call
home.

Akhtar forges a new narrative voice to capture a country in which debt
has ruined countless lives and our ideals have been sacrificed to the
gods of finance, where a TV personality is president and immigrants live
in fear, and where the nation’s unhealed wounds of 9/11 wreak havoc
around the world. Akhtar attempts to make sense of it all through the
lens of a story about one family, from a heartland town in America to
palatial suites in central Europe to guerilla lookouts in the mountains of
Afghanistan, and spares no one — least of all himself — in the process.

Fundamentals: Ten Keys to Reality by Frank Wilczek is our June selection.

One of our great contemporary scientists reveals the ten profound insights
that illuminate what everyone should know about the physical world

In Fundamentals, Nobel laureate Frank Wilczek offers the reader a simple
yet profound exploration of reality based on the deep revelations of
modern science. With clarity and an infectious sense of joy, he guides us
through the essential concepts that form our understanding of what the
world is and how it works. Through these pages, we come to see our
reality in a new way--bigger, fuller, and stranger than it looked before.

Synthesizing basic questions, facts, and dazzling speculations, Wilczek
investigates the ideas that form our understanding of the universe: time,
space, matter, energy, complexity, and complementarity. He excavates
the history of fundamental science, exploring what we know and how we
know it, while journeying to the horizons of the scientific world to give us a
glimpse of what we may soon discover. Brilliant, lucid, and accessible, this
celebration of human ingenuity and imagination will expand your world and
your mind. Click here to register.

Please join us for a special lunchtime lecture with Alessandra
Stanley, the co-editor of Air Mail, a digital news weekly that
unfolds like a weekend edition of an international daily. Before Air
Mail, Alessandra was the New York Times’ chief television critic
for 12 years and also served as the newspaper’s bureau chief in
Moscow and Rome.

The right-hand woman to Graydon Carter, former editor of Vanity
Fair, Alessandra serves as a unique example, of someone who has
successfully navigated the switch from traditional print to the “brave
new world” of digital. She launched a startup in a highly competitive
landscape with (so far!) success and apparent ease. And she isn’t
slowing down any time soon.

Alessandra grew up in Washington, D.C., and Europe, and studied
literature at Harvard University.
