December 2018 Volume 39, No. 6 NEWFPRINTS NCNE Tree Pull December 2nd, 2018 Our Christmas Tree Pull at Christmas Trees at Bishop Farm was a rainy, cold day with lots of mud! Our Newfs and their owners were troopers, pulling in over 15 trees despite the low turnout due to the weather conditions. Every family that came said they were there because of the dogs and many said, “Could we have the same dog as last year?” We had 4 Newfs pulling trees…Gus, Scarlett, Diamond and Cash and 7 others doing meet and greet…Kagan, Gulliver, Seamus, Boom, Sariah, Seattle as well as a special little guest, 10-week- old Tulley. We also had a VIP that day, John Adams, who came despite the weather and was there the whole day speaking to people and sharing his 40 plus years of Newf knowledge…John, you are the best! Thanks to all who came and braved the weather and to Christmas Trees at Bishop Farms for sharing your lovely 100 plus year-old family farm with us. See you next year! BREEDERS SERIES The final seminar for NCNE’s Breeder Series was held Nov. 4 in Sturbridge MA. Our mission for this series was to connect as a group, build relationships by sharing our passions as breeders and Newf enthusiasts. Mission accomplished! We averaged about 25 participants, with half attending each seminar. I think everyone at some point learned something new and can now share and encourage others for the betterment of the breed. The success of this program came from committed breeders and owners who provided information for discussion. But better yet by attended! Thank you all! Thank You Joanne Brainard!!!! Note: The NCNE Board of Directors would like to acknowledge the work of Joanne Brainard for making the Breeders Series happen! We have received a lot of positive comments about it. We will be exploring possible topics for this coming year for both Breeders and Owners. Stay tuned!!!

Meet Dr. Sheri Russell – NCNE Secretary (and TJ!) My name is Dr. Sheri Russell and I have been involved with Newfs since 2001. Throughout the years I have participated in water, draft and conformation but am most proud of the fact that my dogs are all therapy dogs and with me everyday in my practice. I began breeding Newfs in 2009 and have produced multiple champions, therapy dogs and wonderful family additions. I am active in the NCA as a member of the National Specialty Committee, am active in developing research into Fore Limb Anomaly and look forward to advancing the charge of the NCNE. My hope is to continue to represent the Newfoundland in the manner they deserve and advance the cause of health and development of our breed. I look forward to working with the Board of Directors! 17
Meet Laurel Rabschutz – Director, NCNE Board (with Ben) Our first Newf, Golly, was born on December 24, 1982. Two years later we added a second Newf, Orion; and so it goes. I showed both of them in conformation, but neither finished. Golly earned his CD and Orion was my first pet therapy dog. Since then our dogs (including several Bernese and a Portuguese Water Dog) have earned titles in breed, obedience, rally, water and draft work, tricks, freestyle, and most of them have been active in pet therapy work. Some of our adventures have been featured on CNN, Animal Planet, the Today Show, Nick @ Nite, numerous local programs, and in several magazine articles. Originally from Chicago, my husband, Paul Pribula and I have called Connecticut home for over 40 years. I am now retired after working at the University of Connecticut for 30 years as an academic counselor and teaching a course in the Human-Animal Bond. I have a bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, a Master’s in Education, and a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies. We currently share our lives with two Newfoundlands (Dooley 10 yrs) and Wrigley (3 yrs) and a Portie (Iggy 8 yrs). All three participate in a variety of canine activities and are members of Connecticut’s Animal Assisted Crisis Response Team. It’s a canine-centric life, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is an honor to serve on the NCNE board. I am fortunate to consider many of you friends and look forward to getting to know the rest of you at NCNE events, at training sessions, and at the shows. I welcome your comments and concerns about our club and ways to make it a viable and valuable organization for everyone. 18

There have been no negative comments received. Donna seconded the motion. There were no negative votes received by the Secretary. Motion made by Jean, seconded by Keith. Unanimous decision to approve. 2. Ratification of June 1, 2018 email vote for WDC request: a. Donna moved to approve the Working Dog Committee recommendation to increase the entry fee for all levels of the water test to $40. Brenda seconded. There were no negative votes received by the Secretary. Motion made by Keith, seconded by Laurel. Unanimous decision to approve. 3. Ratification of July 16, 2018 email vote for additional monies for breeder’s seminar Jean moved to approve an additional $1000 to fund the upcoming Breeder’s Seminar series. Mary seconded. There were no negative votes received by the Treasurer. Motion made by Laurel, seconded by Keith. Unanimous decision to approve. Executive Session: A motion to enter Executive Session was made by Mary and seconded by Laurel. Unanimously approved. A motion was made by Keith and seconded by Laurel to come out of Executive Session. As a result of Executive Session, the following will occur: Mary will table items that need further research and conversations that are not adding value. People will raise hand to be acknowledged. Guests may add to the conversation and will wait to be acknowledged, limiting their comments to the topic in discussion. President’s Report: Mary welcomed the two new board members, Jess Dicenso and Laurel Rabschutz. Mary thanked everyone for their support during her first term and cited her goals for this year are to formalize the policy and procedure reorganization, finish up the website, obtain a vendor for logo wear, add 10 new members and have event chairs in place 6 months in advance of the event. Secretary’s Report: No report. The position of Secretary is vacant. The board expressed appreciation for the job Donna has done both as Secretary and Director. Donna is forwarding correspondence to Mary until a Secretary is appointed. Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Jean Cote provided an updated year to date report through July 30, 2018. Motion to accept the Treasurer’s report made by Keith and seconded by Jess. Motion carried unanimously. Jean will begin tracking Trophy Fund donations separately. Will combine renewal and event donations. Jean reminded the Board that we should ask the chairs of events to attempt to break even when possible. Full treasurer’s report is available upon request. Unfinished Business: Annual Meeting: A debriefing discussion was led by Mary regarding the recent Annual Meeting held during Spring Fling. There were issues related to members not knowing the schedule of events in advance. The timing of the Annual Meeting was moved earlier than in past years and several members missed it, coming at the usual time of 1 pm. Other
areas needing attention: Lack of vendor support and declining attendance by members. Board felt we should survey the members to get some insight on what would help improve the attendance. It was noted that the last Fall Fun Day was redesigned and attracted a larger number of members. Would this design work for the Spring Fling? Perhaps linking an event to the annual meeting, like an educational seminar or something else, might increase the attendance. Perhaps some of the club’s committees could hold meetings on this date to draw people there. Rescue held a meeting and had good attendance of the state coordinators. Mary will put out a survey to the membership to gather ideas. Awards and Chair Thank You’s: Brenda had investigated crate tags at the direction of the Board. It does not appear to be a feasible idea for the application we want to use them. Other clubs have Christmas ornaments, glassware, plaques. Sue, Laurel and Keith will send photos of items they have received from other clubs for consideration by the board. A decision will be made at the October meeting to give enough time to have them ready for the Annual Meeting. Board wants to add a Thank You for Event Chairs to the Annual Awards celebration. The Board felt a certificate and Thank You card would be appropriate along with the public acknowledgement. Website: No one has volunteered to be the Webmaster. Mary is doing as much as possible. Chan, the paid web designer, is providing Mary with short videos for changing events, adding photos and similar tasks that need to be done on a frequent basis. Chan is still the person to work on forms, and some of the more difficult tasks. We are paying Chan an hourly rate for his work. Mary has asked him to submit a proposal for a flat fee to cover a maximum amount of work each month. That proposal will come to the board for approval. Jean and Brenda both have spent a lot of time working with Chan to get the membership and donation part of the webpage working correctly and there are still some kinks. Next phase build includes new photos for Rescue, more current information for Working Dog events, and 2018 awards. Board was asked to keep looking for things that do not work as intended and to send any issues to Mary and Barry as soon as they are identified. Executive Session: A motion was made by Keith and seconded by Laurel to enter into Executive Session, inviting Sue Jones, Show Liaison, and it was unanimously approved. A motion was made by Keith and seconded by Laurel to come out of Executive Session. As a result of Executive Session, the following will occur: Sue Jones will contact other clubs to identify 2 opportunities for additional supported entry events, one being outdoors. Sue will keep the current events for 2019. Sue will contact other interested committee members. Sue will expand the committee to include hospitality at the dog shows. New Business: Meeting Minutes and bullets: Discussion occurred about reasonable timeframes for minutes and bullets to be made available. Motion made by Mary and seconded by Laurel to approve a policy update as follows: Secretary will publish the bullets within 2 weeks of the meeting. Board will approve within 48 hours of receiving the email. The bullets will then be published in the next NewfPrints. Motion was unanimously approved. Working Dog Committee: Judge selection for working events: Board discussed who should have approval rights for judges and everyone agreed to leave it with the committee. No action needed. Board gave approval to hold the Pumpkin Pull and to purchase new tires for the boat trailer. Jean needs a copy of the boat registration. Kiko will get that to Jean. The registration is currently in Peggy Vivinetto’s name. That will change to be in Kiko’s name in October. Facebook: Club’s Facebook account has a number of people listed as administrator. The board agreed it should be the current President and Secretary. Mary will update the access and notify the people who will be removed. Members’ Obituary Notification: It was suggested by a member that we should share this information with the club membership. The board agreed the Secretary can do this with the family’s approval. We would also acknowledge a major health issue if requested by the member. 20
Holiday Party: Feedback about last year’s party was it was held too close to the Christmas Holiday for good attendance. Board discussed possible locations and decided to have Kathy Luce check into having it at the tavern at the Big E the Saturday evening of the regional weekend shows. Mary will notify Kathy of the request. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Membership: Current memberships total 300 memberships consisting of 157 Family, 132 Individual, 10 Honorary members and 11 Junior members. The online membership process has had a few glitches, which has created some confusion for new members and for the membership secretary! The application forms were not being sent to memberships@newfclubne.org. So I received a couple of random checks in the mail without applications. Families did fill out applications on line but didn’t know they were not being submitted to me. This proved difficult to hunt down phone numbers to try to reconcile this. Then I was receiving applications with no sponsor because the online form did not have a space to add a sponsor’s name. That is now corrected. Now, I am receiving applications online with no accompanying payment. The payment form is on a different tab from the online application and sometimes the payment submit button didn’t work. So I currently have two applications from families that have not yet paid. I have been emailing them, but I will make calls if I do not get a response. The person who we hired to work on the website is trying to make an adjustment to the payment button to have it on the same page as the online application. Now that we have online entries, I will not print these forms. I’m keeping an online filing system. (I’m currently housing all the paper applications forms since the club’s inception. There are too many old dusty files.) Just as a reminder, for anyone sponsoring a new member, you will receive an email from me asking you to confirm your sponsorship. You will no longer need to sign a form. Thank you to those people who are emailing me in advance to let me know you are sponsoring an individual or family. If a Director can make a motion to accept the 2 family memberships that were posted in the last NewfPrints we can add two more families to the membership total. They are: Salvatore J. & Linda J.
