We all look forward to your best abilities and for that I am sorry. I have putting the boots on next year. loved being back involved with the Prebbleton Div 1's and am thankful for the chance to coach a great bunch of lads. Greg & Fonz Without your efforts in trying to make me look like a decent coach, I don't think I would have the coaching position I have now. I hope that you guys are all proud of the progress you all made Colts and believe me when I say, that when you got it right you boys played some very good rugby. On a more pleasing note was the number of players who made higher honours. Congratulations to the boys who made Ellesmere Seniors and Colts, Canterbury Country Seniors and Colts, Canterbury Maoris and Ellesmere Development teams. Several players reached mile stones this season: James Rush 150 games, Karl Rush 85 games, Steve Lee-Godwin 70 games, Matt Ryall 60 games and Matt Rogers 50 Games. Enjoy the summer, have a beer for me and I'll see Another rugby season done and dusted. you all again soon. The 2015 Prebbleton colts season started off with having to chase up players as 14 eligible player Joe and Pete from last season decided not to play rugby this season for one reason or another, so after countless phone calls and some outstanding work by the players we ended up having 17 new Div 2 players turn out for colts this season. We used 26 players during the season and five of these players were Under 18 plus two of these were only just too old to play Under 16 so over all a young squad. With only one pre season game under their belts the boys started off with two wins from the first two games before the wheels fell off a little losing the next four games, these losses were a mixture of the other teams playing well and us not following the game plan and not backing ourselves plus every coach’s this team ended up having 6 wins from 12 games for the season ending up 5th on the ladder out of 11 colts teams, Page 3 September 2015, Volume 19, Issue 2
Colts … contd with a little more commitment and attitude from some players this squad could have and should have been playing semi final rugby but hey that’s rugby and hindsight is a fine thing. For our Non-Competitive grades, it’s truly humbling to identified with the GOLDEN oldies style of rugby, see so many willing parents who are prepared to dropped balls and plenty of banter, and our first give it a go. We were also successful in winning the 7-a-side competition for our U16 & Junior Club Captain U18 teams. Once again a HUGE thank you to, the Committee, As we come to the end of another season, it’s Coaches, Managers, Volunteers, Parents, time to reflect on how well it went but also on Supporters and players for making our club one of what we have learnt along the way. the best in Ellesmere. I hope you all have a great I’ve learnt that having Grade managers for all the summer, stay safe and hopefully I will see you all Non-Competitive grades is the best thing since in the new year. “sliced bread”. Thank you to Ange, Kris and Nicky for stepping up this year and looking after our Cheers Telsa junior grades. As I heard at all the prize giving’s, each grade appreciated the work that these guys did and I hope we see them back next year. I’ve learnt that the pull between club rugby and Under 16 school rugby is impacting earlier than in previous years. While it’s not ideal, I understand the pull to School rugby, and I hope to take the learnings from this year through to next so we can all work together to make it easier for all concerned. We also did something different this year with our U11.5 grades by having an “A” team. There is definitely two schools of thought on how well this worked so I’m looking forward to debriefing with the coaches to see what learnings we can take away from this season. I learnt, once again, that to keep the faith with regards to getting enough numbers for our teams. As our season starts earlier than Metro, we tend to overlap with summer sport Hi all, well since my last report the team has commitments. But apart from the odd team or carried on in the second / Ellesmere round of the two, we had full squads for the first game of the under 16 competition, this started with a loss to season. As this is my 3rd year in this role….you Lincoln followed by a win over Methven and then would of thought I may have learnt that lesson the season highlight a good victory against earlier! Unfortunately this victory was know once the first game starts, we get more followed by a loss to Malvern which not only players coming onboard! meant the loss of the shield, but knocked us out As per previous seasons, I am amazed and truly of semi final contention. Our last game of the grateful to all our Coaches and Managers who put season was also another second half loss to West Page 5 September 2015, Volume 19, Issue 2
Melton which relegated us to the holders of the Ellesmere wooden spoon for the year. The second half has been our nemesis this year, in our six losses for the season we were leading or level at half time in four of them – fitness fellas, you can’t hope to compete at the top level if only half the team is fit, it’s a fifteen man game. Our final results for the season were 13 games, 6 Wins, 6 Losses, 1 Draw. Our leading try scorer for the year was Kyle Jamieson with ten tries, followed by Brett Jackson with eight and Jayden Hay with six, Kyle was also the leading point’s scorer with 74 points for the season, followed by Nic Forster with 39. Congratulations to all our rep players - put ourselves within a chance to push for a Ellesmere U15: Lachlan Stove, Nic Forster, playoffs spot but unfortunately came up short Tane Knowler when the regular season came to a close. Thanks to all our parents who helped with feeding the lads at home games. Thanks to all our loyal supporters who followed us Under 13 Blue from one end of Canterbury to the other. And finally thanks to Telsa, who has the biggest job in the club and does a great job keeping us on the straight and narrow, Telsa you should have been born a male, you would have made a great rugby player – right in the middle of the action. Cheers Dino, Anaru, Brad and Greg Under 14.5 The Prebbleton U14.5's rugby team has had a mixed second part to the season after such a great start. We were generally up against bigger, older and faster teams and on a couple of occasions were comprehensively beaten but we won a few games and the balance of those we lost was not by many as we proved very competitive. We would have been even more competitive had the boys not decided that it’s best to wait until the second half to show then opposition just what sort of footy we could play as we had a habit of waiting until we were a couple of tires down before switching on, in saying that It was clear once we had switched on as team we could be unstoppable. This team has had a very positive attitude at practices, worked hard all year and they have improved in each game. The players have enjoyed each other’s company and have showed a great sense of team comraderie, which has certainly helped them through some tough games this season. They never gave up when they were down, always kept their heads up and wouldn’t stop trying till the final whistle blew. I am very proud of the players’ attitude and they should all be very proud of themselves. I wish them all the best for next season. Another season over, and just when we were Under 11.5 Blue starting to hit our straps! A couple of wins and some very close losses to finish with and I think under 11.5 white might have enjoyed a couple more games to finish off the season. Over all we had a good season for our team with 7 wins and 8 losses seemed to keep everyone keen and enjoying there rugby for the year. Everybody showed good improvement and worked hard at training's throughout the season. We really noticed this year how much everyone seems to enjoy the 15-a-side rugby just that bit more. The tackling and the try scoring was definitely spread around the team a bit more now! Thanks to Marty Peoples for helping with the coaching and Lyndene Rea for your management. Thank you to our sponsors Enterprise Recruitment, Poulfert and Healthy Harvest. It was also great to have a season with no cancellations or closed grounds this year, I'm sure Pete Northmore there isn't to many times that happens! Although with the flu's and stuff that went around it more often than not proved a challenge to get full turn outs at training, and often for games we didn't Under 11.5 White know if we would have 15 some weeks, but well done to those who made the effort to get down to pretty much every session. Well done to those from the junior club who made rep teams this year I hope you learnt a lot, made new friends and also had a lot of fun as well. A big thank you to all those people on the committee who work so hard for the club. Playing and coaching is the fun bit, but we wouldn't have a club with out all the time that you guys put in. We have great facilities and gear, so on behalf of our team thank you very much. Also thanks very much to Mark Buckley for giving up your time and coming down to ref our grade. Under 11.5 Green Under 10 Blue After a tough start to our season the boys came back firing after the term 2 holiday break and this showed out on the pitch. With some new additions to the squad coming from Rugby League and playing for us most games was a huge asset with their big tackles and solid runs. All the boys seemed to follow in their footsteps, with everyone gaining in confidence and we were certainly not afraid to have a crack at the line. Although still winless for the season, our boys improved rapidly and all the dedication the lads showed finally payed off when we got a last minute win over the other Prebbleton Red team. This was an exciting time for us as coaches, the supporters and especially the boys themselves. With this win in the bag, we looked for more wins Although we didn’t have a great season on the and the boys gained even more confidence score board, we did have a great year. This lifted the team each week ,all striving to be the player of the day that week. Once won I think it was worn every day that week until they had to give it back and it was up for grabs again. Our team members were Ollie Brook, Nathan Edge, Bennie Milligan, Lachy Anderson, Will Prebble, Khan McKay, Ethan Seath, Ben Greenhalgh, Cam Smith, Angus O’Connell, Ford Honeywill, and Emily McCormick. Although the results haven’t always shown it, all the boys have made huge strides in both rugby skills and their contribution to the team game. For all the boys this is only their second season in tackle and it has been a steep learning curve, but they never gave up – epitomised in the game against Darfield when they were well behind on the scoreboard and proceeded to score the last three tries of the game. It is been a really difficult task choosing our Player of the Year and Most Improved as all the boys gave their best throughout the season and they have come off the field each week Having finished in the top half of the draw at the having enjoyed the game, win or lose . Hopefully end of Round one, we continued on with a mission we can keep the core of the team together for of placing as high as we could against the next season and carry on where we left off. stronger teams we faced. The result wasn’t as favourable as we had hoped with only 1 win and 4 losses to round out the year but we are still very proud that the boys played hard and most importantly improved their rugby skills over the remaining season. They were definitely not ones to moan or complain and just did as they were told and gave it what they had. We wish the 3 or 4 boys going up a grade next year the best of luck and those remaining in Under 10 will be much better equipped with the skills and knowledge to lead them into a great 2016 season. Thanks again to Neville and Mark for coaching, Alan for texting the score in each week, parents for supporting The team would like to thank our sponsors; and sponsors for backing the boys! Also the team has had awesome support from a group of very proud parents whose behaviour on the sidelines has been an example to some of our opponents. The coaches would like to thank Glenn, Dave and Scott for their assistance at the practices and Scott for his fine work as ‘waterboy’ on match days. A huge well done to our top try scorers this year, Under 8.5 Red Flynn with 45, Luchian with 16 and Connor with 13. We are proud of every single one of our guys and gals in the team, they have been fantastic and should be extremely proud of themselves for the progress they have made individually and as a team. We would also like to congratulate our trophy winners this year. 'Player of the year' Flynn McKendry for his relentless and outstanding effort in every game and 'Most Improved' Matthew Edge for his enthusiasm, ability to stay in the mix and team support. The kids grew as players, and established some good friendships with one another. They played hard but fair, and everyone had a chance to shine, and each did on a regular basis. They trained hard with more injuries, blood and tears at training than in the games, and the kids progressed well and you could see them taking what they learnt to the field. The on field results were an amazing achievement, with 10 wins it wasn’t until the last few rounds that we got outplayed by a couple of better teams. Also for the support and help from parents Rob, Dan, Paul and Nic on the field and to all the mums who helped with the kitchen duties each week. The duel coaching worked really well with different ideas and tactics bought to the field. Dean wishes to personally thank Brendon for the great refereeing and support he gave. The importance of working as a team and helping each other really encourages success and for the U8.5 red team we feel it showed. Thank you heaps for the appreciation shown to me as manager, It has been an enjoyable experience and one I may even repeat next year! ;O) Over half the team remain eligible for U8.5's next year, so if they all return and play together again A big thank you to Telsa and Sarah and the club it sets up next year’s team quite nicely. for their on-going support of our junior teams. It is hard to imagine the older ones playing tackle next year if they choose to when you look at the size of them. The team also looked very smart in their jackets that were kindly sponsored by Lachlan’s Dad, Dave of Dave Sewell Business Performance Coaching. Every player had their moment to shine at some point no matter how big or small. I thoroughly hope the children have enjoyed their season and have gained some new skills and met some new friends. We had a mix of 4yr olds-7yr olds, beginning players to others with three seasons under their belts. Finishing the season with 8 wins 3 draws and 3 losses. Also thanks to Jared Hayston who was our unofficial assistant coach and gave up a lot of time both to be at practice and helping out at the games. I must mention our sponsor, Peter Fletcher Transport, without whom we wouldn't have had our awesome hoodies and thanks to Jamie Fletcher for providing the sponsorship and assisting while I was away in the middle of the season. As I've said, our greatest strength this season was team work and it was great coaching a team that were so respectful and listened when the coach had something to say. We finished the year with more wins than losses – and the losses were all by only 1 or 2 tries. We managed to get up over 80 points in a couple of wins (falling one try short of 100 points once). But more importantly it’s been a really fun season for boys and also for us coaches - Brent (head coach) and Craig (assistant coach). The boys always tried their best during training and gave it their all on game days, and we’re really proud of the efforts they’ve all put in this year. We’ve got a great bunch and the team end of season BBQ was excellent fun, with the boys taking the coaches down by 2 tries in a game of tackle (some future stars here we think!) It’s been a real pleasure watching the boys grow in confidence this year, and we’re looking forward to seeing them all back next season. Cheers, Brent and Craig The team was a mixture of returning players in Blake, Jamie, Hendrix, Jackson and Ryan – what a difference the year has made for these boys.
