HYSA #1 Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Close Finish! March 2, 2013 HYSA Regatta 2, held on Saturday, March 16, was a race to remember! Team KYC was greeted with light to moderate Kona winds as well as stiff competition from our rival yacht clubs. The course was challenging and we had a great time just figuring out what side of the line was favored. HKYC joined us adding the O'Pen Bic class to the race fleet. Mathew Butler and I were neck and neck throughout the entire regatta, with the whole fleet right on our heels. Matthew and I managed finish the regatta with only a one point separation! We were tied going into the last race but Matthew prevailed finishing with six points. The junior sailors had close finishes and great competition, what more could you ask for? Zach Kaan broke a tie-breaker and was awarded 1st place in Laser B. Special thanks to Ken and his team at the KMCB for hosting a great event. Kudos to Aunty Kai Andrade who took some great action photos and assisted with registration with Aunty Lori Ford. International 14 Fleet Elise Leroux International 14 Racing First-place honors for the International 14 fleet’s hard-fought “Frostbite Series” go to Maureen and Andy Bates. The fleet’s year is divided into 3 series of 4 regattas each, and the Frostbite Series provided the opportunity to race in all kinds of breeze – 12-15 kts on Jan 20th; 8-12 kts on Feb 9th; 18-22+ on Feb 24th, and 0-6 kts on March 10th. Team Bates showed great consistency across the range of conditions, posting 5 bullets, 3 second-place finishes, and 3 thirds. Tom Pochereva sailed the series with two crews – veteran I-14er Brad Cole in Regattas A and B, and fleet newcomer Garret Venema in Regattas C and D. Tom and crews were a close 2nd in the series, finishing only 1 point behind Three in a boat -- Meg Murphy & Getting comfortable in an I14 the Bates. Frostbite Series Final Results after 4 regattas (11 races) Kaneohe Skiff Day – March 9, 2013 That was awesome! --Benton Widlansky The I-14 fleet offered a second Skiff Day after the first one saw too much wind, and we were well rewarded with a very talented and enthusiastic group that came out to try their hand at skiff sailing. The six sailors who hopped on board did a fine job and had a blast, even in tricky conditions. The weather forecast of 2-20 knots turned out to be pretty accurate, with some stronger gusts, making for exhilarating rides, a few “love taps,” and plenty of opportunity to practice righting the boats. The fleet sends out big mahalos to Bob Stephenson and Pat “Moose” Kudlich for running the support boat, and to Harald von Sydow and his son Lars (aka “Mini Me”) for Zodiac transport. We couldn't have done it without them. Many members of the fleet also contributed to this successful day – helping with rigging, sailing, on-water support, and gear loans. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen, and kudos to those who braved an I-14 for the first time. We look forward to seeing you on an I-14 again soon! Please note that there are several I-14s for sale locally, so if you happen to know of any interested parties, contact the fleet captain – we’re always looking to grow our ʻohana. KYC Cruising Fleet President’s Day Molokai Cruise Wrap Up F or the second year in a row the KYC Cruising Fleet had to divert from our planned President’s Day weekend cruise to Hale o Lono Harbor on Molokai’s South shore and head instead to the Hakipu’u anchorage near Chinaman’s Hat due to excessively heavy trade winds. Nine boats anchored in Hakipu’u on Saturday and endured rain, swells, and winds that exceeded 30 knots at times. The six sailboats that anchored in the outer harbor had a great time socializing and hunkering down in the blustery weather. Rocky Young Sunrise at Hakipuʼu Photo: Leary/Lloyd raised the “togetherness” bar with a crew of seven on his 34 foot Kolonahe. Don Brown invited the fleet over for dinner on his more spacious 38 foot Kolonahe where it was standing room only during cocktail hour. Tennis Fleet Donlei Darnell Greg Siok, Corned Beef and Cabbage and all the other fixings were on the menu Susie Jannuzzi, for the Tennis Fleet's annual March potluck. We have great cooks in David White, this fleet and they proved it again on March 2nd. The decorations were Cathy Brigham thanks to Sherri Phillips. She had shamrocks and green everywhere…..thank you Sherri!! The tournament earlier in the day was coordinated by Betsy Denzer and there were some very fun matches on the schedule. Players were Jack Aaron, Kit Beuret, Elaine Bowers, Cathy Brigham, Linnea Brooks, Steve Brooks, Shari Cotton, Betsy Denzer, Keegan Giles, JoAnn Goebert, John Gross, Sime Gross, Rich Heaton, Susie Jannuzzi, Aaron Phillips, Rob Rietow, Cindy Siok and Mora Stanley. There were winning points' ties for first and second in both Men's Photos: Donlei Darnell and Women's Divisions. Betsy Denzer tied with Sime Gross, and Kit Beuret tied Rob Rietow. After drawing gold coins with numbers on them and adding points to individuals' scores, things got confusing but everyone had fun!! Next month will be a Mexican theme: Torneo de Tenis. It will be held at Susie Jannuzzi and David White's home on Wilikoki Place. Be sure to RSVP to Jean for food and sign up for the tournament on the Diane Minsky, Chuck and Shari bulletin board or with me or Cindy Siok. Cotton Don't forget to sign up for tennis lessons starting in April. See the flyer on the Tennis Fleet Bulletin Board and in the Telltales. Let's take advantage of our own talent and learn with Greg! Welcome Newcomers! Racing Tactics Andy Johnson Getting deep into thought...sailboat racing is a lot like life. To do well you must take risks. How many and what type are the key to success.
