FROM THE OG’S PERSPECTIVE It has been a very busy summer for the new Oriental Guide and Lady Vera. This summer started with going to Day- tona Beach for the Imperial Session where I was in session most days and learned many things. During the Potentate’s Dinner, given by Ill. Mark Morgan and Lady Janet, we were pleasantly surprised to find the Divan from Puerto Rico at the next table. We were able to exchange information with our Oriental Guide counter- part George Lopez. At another dinner hosted by Chief Rabban Bill Pease and Lady Beth, we met Jessica and Bella, both Shriners patients. They delighted us with their lovely voices. Lady Vera also was able to meet Ketchi from America’s Got Talent fame—a former Shriners kid. August brought C.S.S.A. in Branson, where we met up with friends and counterparts from OG school, and a good friend, “Jack” from El Jebel Temple. We have high hopes that since the summer is fading and fall appearing, we will all have time for family and friends at our newly refurbished Moila Shrine. Check the web and bulletin for activities. Thanks, Your OG Bill Gallagher and Lady Vera August 2018 Transportation Report: There were 5 trips taken in the van to St. Louis this month. We paid out $450 for patients to drive themselves to St. Louis. We paid $500 for a patient to drive to Chicago. They are out of the South West passes, so we must purchase plane tickets from now on. We paid out $1695.76 for plane tickets to Chicago. Hospital expenses for cab fare, meals, and lodging totaled $124.84 Gas expenses for the van totaled $161.06 The transportation total for the month was $2966.38 IN MEMORIAM Wayne L. 4 C.S.S.A. RECAP Greetings to all Nobles and Ladies from the 2018 Housing Director. I wanted to thank everyone who came out to CSSA 2018 and stayed with Moila. This year Ill. Sir Bob Couldry, made the arraignments at the Grand Country Inn on the Strip. I want to thank Ill. Sir Couldry as he had completed the hard work before retiring from the position. Ill. Sir Couldry also continues to provide advice and assistance needed in ful- filling the required duties. At the hotel Ill. Sir Mark Morgan and Lady Janet hosted most of the Nobles at the Hospitality Room. A special thanks to Ill. Sir H Mark Crawford and Lady Nancy and Ill. Sir Dave Brown and Lady Jennie for all the hard work in the Moila Hospitality Room. I know the Nobles enjoyed the fruits of your labors. Moila hosted fifty-six Nobles and Ladies from seven Units at the Grand Country Inn. Moila also hosted Ill. Sir Casey Nuss from Tehama Shrine in Hastings, Nebraska, and Keith “Lucky” Seplak and Lady Tere- sa, (and Sarge), High Priest and Prophet of El Zaribah Shrine, Phoenix Arizona. It was nice to have visit- ing Divan Members stay with Moila, a trend that I hope continues. In addition to the wonderful hospitality, Nobles and Ladies enjoyed the Night Shirt Parade, Pub Crawl and Ballyhoo Thursday night. Friday morning saw the Hot Sand Bugs competing in the Drill Competition and Obstacle Course. Friday morning also saw the Moila Clowns competing in the Make Up/Costume and Skit competitions. Later Friday night, the Brothers came together at the Moila Hospitality Room, to hear the announcements and Ill. Sir Mark Morgan’s remarks and thanks to the attendees. Saturday morning kicked off with the traditional CSSA Parade. Moila fielded two Parade Units the Hillbil- lies and the Hot Sand Bugs. Ill. Sir. Casey Nuss of Tehama Shrine rode in the parade with Moila in a Hot Sand Bug. Additionally, members of the Mounted Patrol, Clowns, Legion of Honor, Old Tymers, Kops and the Temple Treasurer (in full Kops regalia), and Recorder took part in the parade. I am happy to report that Noble Robert Ware’s consecutive string of unbroken CSSA parades remains intact! Nobles enjoyed spending time with each other outside the busy pace of normal life. They dined together at a variety of local locations, and took in a wide variety of local activities. In addition to too much food be- ing eaten there were two golf outings that were attended, a “roller coaster” ridden, go carts raced and of course shopping. A good time was had.by all. Although the CSSA 2018 has come and passed, preparations for CSSA 2019 have already begun. Moila has secured housing in Sioux City, Iowa from August 21-25, 2019. Stay tuned for more details as CSSA 2019 gets closer. I want to thank all of you for your patience with me as the new Housing Director. There were bumps along the way, but we all survived and had a very nice time doing so I believe. I also want to thank you all for making my CSSA experience a fun and memorable one!
N N O O T T I I C C E E From the Recorder Nobles, your elected Divan attended the 144th Annual Session of Shriners International in Daytona Beach, Florida from July 15-19, 2018. The Temple Representatives from 197 Temples acted on 45 pieces of legislation. Many of these items were housekeeping in nature, but several important items for both the Fraternal side (Iowa Corporation) and Shriners Hospitals (Colorado Corporation) were considered. As you know, the world of medicine is always changing and moving forward at a rapid pace. To con- tinue being a leader in this field, our joint boards must be able to make changes in a timely manner. Currently we are spending $2.6 Million per day to operate our 22 Hospitals. It is imperative that our boards be able to make decisions in a timely manner on how, when and where we delivery care to children throughout the world. Much of the legislation passed at Daytona for the Colorado Corpora- tion will allow them to do so!!! On the Fraternal side, if you were at the Temple Meeting in August, you witnessed one of the changes approved at the Session. With regard to balloting on candidates, if there is no objection from the Nobility, a voice vote or show of hands can be taken on a petition for membership, rather than a paper ballot. The Shriners International Annual Session is always a great time for fun and fellowship. It is also necessary to conduct the business to move our great Fraternity forward. The 2019 Session will be in Nashville, Tennessee and in 2020 it will be in our backyard in Kansas City, Missouri. Please consider attending one of those sessions and join in the fun and fellowship. Fall is upon us and will bring many opportunities for Shrine activities. We will also see the comple- tion of the remodel project for our building and a Grand Reopening!! Please watch your e-mail for the coming events. If we don’t have your e-mail, please forward it to the Temple Office. Yours in the Faith, Ill. Ken Dunlap, Recorder
From Your Chief Rabban Wow! Where has our summer gone?? I am writing this shortly after returning from CSSA. It has always surprised me that more no- bles and ladies don’t attend CSSA. CSSA (Central States Shrine Association) is an opportunity for all of us to get together with all of the other Shrine Centers in our area. There are so many things to see and do! Shriner’s marketplace opens the first day and runs throughout. You can find about anything you may want Shrine or Masonic related here. If you wonder where someone got that cool hat, shirt or jacket, this is where. Pins, stickers, magnets,jJewelry, parade vehicles and even circus representatives. We got to spend a little time with Adrian Poema from Royal Hanneford, our circus provider. We are Facebook friends with him and Nellie so it was fun to catch up with him on what we had each been up to. Nellie was busy working so Adrian was unsupervised at CSSA. They are add- ing some very interesting acts to the circus and I can’t wait till it gets here!!! We got together with the other Chief Rabbans and their ladies from across CSSA for a dinner and shared ideas and news from all the Shrine Centers. Each of the Divan members do this and it is a great way to learn what other shrines are doing and talk through the successes, failures and changes, lets us work together to find new events and opportunities to bring our members together in fun and exciting ways. Look for some new items to be on Moila’s calendar next year! Following dinner we went hospitality hopping. Each Shrine center has a hospitality room where they throw open the door to all Shriners and their ladies to come in and enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship of their group. So many great people to see and time just flies when you are making the rounds. To fully understand what this shrine experience can be I encourage each of you to make the rounds. There is so much out there. Among the great people we got to spend time with were Imperial Sir Jim Cain and his lady Patsy and the new Imperial Membership director. They have some great ideas and spending time talking with them was a great opportunity to share ideas back and forth. I have had many opportunities to speak with Imperial Sir Jim while I have been advancing up the Divan and I am always impressed by his vision and appreciate his taking the time to talk to me one on one. His counsel has helped shape my vision as well, and I am eter- nally grateful to have had these opportunities. We also spent some time with Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder and his lady Cheryl on a few occasions as we are very close friends with our previous and current counterparts from Midian. We seemed to run into Imperial Sir Brad Koen and his lady Cheryl frequently on this trip. We have had the pleasure of knowing them for several years having met them while we were chief aides before going on the line. It is always good the hear from Imperial Sir Brad that he is happy to see us out there expanding our horizons and participating with so many different groups. I appreciate and respect his advice and cherish these opportunities to meet with him and Cheryl. We then attended the rain shortened ballyhoo. What is a ballyhoo you ask? It is a gathering of ALL the Oriental Bands in CSSA to play a “battle of the bands”. To see all of the CSSA OB’s in their costumes and playing “music” is a spectacle in itself and is a must see when attending CSSA. The rain let up just in time for the Night Shirt parade. Moila has continued to increase attendance at this event each year for the last 3 with 17 at this year’s parade. The units and clubs represented at the Night Shirt parade were Clowns, Legion of Honor, Misfits, Ole Tymers and our very own one man Corvette club! We hope to see participation continue to grow in this fun event in the future. The theme this year was emoji which is why the emoji’s are in the picture. The following day started competitions. The sheer number of competitions makes it impossible to see it all but I will try to provide an overview. Bands- Some Shrines still have actual bands and they meet and compete. It is sad to see that these fun units are shrinking each year. There is not the same interest in music that there has been in past generations. Clowns-Clowns compete in make-up, Character, 1 man skits, 2 man skits, 3 man skits and so on. Moila’s very own Dinky (Craig Cook) tried out a new tramp this year and got 3 rd place with it. He also worked with Hobo Skeet in a 2 man skit and got a top 5. A couple of other Moila clowns sat through the entire competition to gather ideas and experience. Look for some big things out of this group. Foot Patrol- Many of the Shrines have foot patrol that do competitive drill. This is very impressive to watch. For anyone wanting to get into something that doesn’t require a lot of expensive costumes, vehicles or equipment, this is a great option. It is something that you can do that has a vast group of likeminded Shriners to see while at CSSA or Imperial. Horse Patrol-Many of the Shrines have horse patrols of some type. The Moila Mounted Patrol puts on a good show when they com- pete. Unfortunately they were not able to bring critters this year but we are hoping for next year. I could write a whole article on just the Horse Patrols. Keystone Kops-There are several Kop units across CSSA and Shrinedom. This is a great way to get involved and have an immediate connection with other groups. Illustrious Dave Ingersoll was wearing his Kop uniform in the parade at CSSA. I am hoping that this is a sign of the coming return of Moila’s Keystone Kops! If you are interested in this fun unit please see Illustrious Dave or Terry Murphy. They can provide any information you might need. Legion of Honor-Our veterans in LOH across Shrinedom get together and enjoy camaraderie and fellowship at CSSA and Imperial. If you are a veteran you should be in LOH and can attend these events. Motor Corps-Essentially anything (and I do mean ANYTHING) with a motor on it. They compete in Drill and/or Obstacle. You may see anything from any shrine parade you have ever seen. Miniature semi trucks, Drift trikes, motorcycles, mini bikes, miniature combines, go karts and dune buggies. The Hot Sand bugs competed in 4 wheel large category and got a 1 st place in drill and placed well in ob- stacle. These guys put in a lot of effort on the drill and have to transport the bugs. We appreciate the effort and commitment. Perhaps someone in Moila could put another 4 wheel large group together. Maybe a ‘vette club?? Kim Evans, I’m talking to you! LOL Oriental Band- I spoke of this in the Ballyhoo as well. They also compete. Provost-The security arm of the Shriners does a shooting competition for Nobles and for ladies. I am probably leaving something out but as you know, the memory is the first to go. I encourage each of you, nobles and ladies to make plans to go to CSSA when you get a chance. I also encourage each of you to find something that interests you and get involved with it. We all benefit from spending time with each other doing something we enjoy. Make the very most of your Shrine experience. Get out there and see all that there is to see. Get out of your comfort zone and explore all that there is out there. I can promise you will not regret it and that you will meet lifelong friends along the way from all over the region and possibly the world! I know Lady Beth and I sure have and our lives are better because of it. Bill Pease, Chief Rabban
Ole Tymers Greetings All, Well, we have had a very busy summer, with a good Ole Tymers showing @ the annual Car Show & Ice Cream Social. We had 7 of our old cars in attendance, with Leland Daise winning second place trophy & Wayne Nold winning a socket set in one of the drawings. Good job, guys!! Thanks for all others for having a good showing. A special thanks to Kim Evans & Jerry Thornton for manning the snow cone booth. Parades have been well attended. We had 5 cars @ Stewartsville, 7 cars & 5 Ladies @ Fairfax, with Vern Hart going to DeKalb, as both were on same day. We always enjoy the nice meal, that is furnished @ Fairfax & appreciate the nice donation to our Temple. C.S.S.A. was next, in order. Kim Evans & Lady Myra & my Lady Bev & I made the trip. We all had a good time & really enjoyed the fellowship & hospitality with our fellow Moila Shriners. Enjoyed watching the clown competition on Fri. & the all temple parade on Sat. Our Temple was #7 in the line-up & got thru parade within an hour. The Wathena Parade, on Sun. Sept. 2nd was one of the best attended parades. We had 9 cars & 8 Ladies. Of course it started raining just when we got to end of parade. Also had a couple of car problems, which is normal, for most parades. However, our old cars are just like our members, we may stumble or fall, but we get right up & keep going!! We look forward to wrapping up the parade season, with the coming Southside & Wes- ton Parades. We continue to have our monthly unit meetings @ Jerry Thornton's home. Thanks Jerry! We are hoping we can get back to having these meetings in the Temple, in Oct. Terry Imlay is in Africa, on a big game hunt. We hope he makes it back home, safe & sound. Several of our Ladies, continue to have health problems, please keep Sue Long, Dee Frye, Lola Hansen, & Donna Imlay in your thoughts & pray- ers. Yours in the Faith, Bob Nichols

Fraternally yours, Douglas D Plowman, Commander REMINDER: LEGION OF HONOR ANNUAL DUES ARE $20.00 AND YOU MAY PAY THEM ONLINE AT www.moilaloh.com Shrine Hospitals. By Walter A. Guest A brave boy stepped across the floor He wondered where his money went Who had never walked before. And when his kindly gift was spent In haunts of misery and strife He never followed day by day He saw the dawn of happier life. The dollars which he gave away. But few of these, they said would live And so they said, Let's trace them down If men like you refused to give. And go with them about the town. If but one crippled child would smile They led him to a crippled child You'd count your sacrifice worth while. Who looked at him and bravely smiled. When asked to give, recall these scenes He gazed on doctors kind and wise, And understand what giving means. Restoring sight to little eyes. He saw health start to grow again On faces that were white with pain.

FROM THE TREASURER —“Can You See Me Now?” At the October 2017 Grand Lodge of Kentucky Annual Communication, Grand Master Todd Jones asked Tennessee Grand Master Casey Hood to bring the traditional greetings on behalf of the visiting distinguished guests. His comments are reproduced here with the hope they will be read at every lodge. --Editor Thank you for allowing us to be here this morning. It is a wonderful day to be part of your Grand Lodge. Most Worshipful sir, before I start, I have a problem I need to bring up. For you Brethren who don’t know when there are certain affairs of state, it is not for the individual members to talk to another Grand Lodge. It’s one of these crazy things where the mem- bers must talk to the Grand Lodge, the Grand Lodge, the Grand Lodge, etc. I had a little problem. I was all over Tennessee last, couldn’t get anywhere I wanted to be. I was at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville one day; I was at the University of Chattanooga, so you have to be a little bit of a UT [University of Tennessee] fan. I come in here; I park, I have little UT sticker on my truck. I go out there this morning, and there’s some wet paint on my truck, it is not UT it says UK [University of Kentucky]. I talked to the Valet, asking him if he had any idea who did that. No sir, I don’t know exactly who he was. He was a small fella, and he was wearing a Masonic t-shirt. So, I’m officially informing you, when I find that member of yours who has done this to my truck I’m going to have a little talk with him. If you know who it is, I’d appreciate it if you would tell me. [Response and laughter from the craft] Here’s my message, that first coat is dry, so you can put that second coat on any time you want to. Your Worshipful Grand Master gave me this courtesy, so I asked him what he would like me to speak about. He said to make them laugh and make them think. I just made you laugh now it’s time to make you think. How many of you have seen Todd’s camouflage tuxedo? Masonry teaches us by allegoric symbols, and I think I know the mes- sage he was trying to convey to you and I’m going to do my best to put it into words. Several years ago, my father and I went into a sporting goods store, and he was looking at a camouflage outfit, getting ready to go hunting that winter. He kind of liked it; he didn’t know. The salesman was real pushy. Real pushy! Dad didn’t really want to buy it and kept looking. The salesman finally said to him, “Just try it on.” So, to shut him up my dad tried it on. Then the salesman said you need this and you gotta have that. My dad, tired of hearing all this said, “How do I look in this?” The salesman said he looked real good. My dad took everything off, threw it on the floor and said he won’t have it; we’re leaving here. The salesman said “What’s wrong? I said you looked good.” My dad said, “It’s camouflage! If you can see me, it don’t work.” My message to you today, gentlemen, is can you see me now? That’s the truth. You brothers have extended one of the warmest welcomes I ever have had in my life over the last couple of days. You have treated me with the utmost courtesy and respect as the Most Worshipful Grand Master of the state of Tennessee. You have shook my hand. You have thanked me for being here. You have treated me; I cannot put it into words, it would humble you to have men treat you this way. But it’s because I hold a title, I hold an office. But gentleman, I will tell you, as well as any of these men up on this stage, we are not any better than you. I ask you, every day when you go into your community, would you treat me the same way if you met me on the side of the road working as a construction worker? Would you see me as the same man? In a month or so when you decide to go deer hunting on your favorite farm and there’s another man up the way, and he killed your deer. He may be a good man, but would you see him for that good man or would you see him for something else? Every day of your life you run into someone who is a friend, and you have neglected to talk about Masonry to him. Can you see him for who he is? Can you see the benefit this Fraternity would have for him? Can you see how the Fraternity would benefit from having him as a member? You heard from the young man from DeMolay speak about how he kept waiting for his father to ask him or give him a petition, and it never happened. Finally, he had to ask his dad, “Hey, what’s the problem?” His dad informed him, to be one you have to ask one. Gentlemen, we have kept the secret of what this Fraternity means for far too long. You are a part of the most moral institution in the world. You are the people that are the backbone of this country. Every one of you sitting in lodge in the last week, month or year have heard a knock at the door, and some young man or some older man just comes in and say they’ve been waiting to see someone here, can they have a petition. You would run all over each other to get them one and sign your name to it, not knowing them or where he came from. You would figure that out later. But every day, there’s a man you went to school with, there’s a man you work with, there’s a man at church, there’s a man in your social group that would make a good Mason and you have neglected to talk to him about this Fraternity and what it means to you in your heart. I challenge each one of you. You have a lapel pin of some type or a coin with a Masonic emblem. If you’ve got that man in your life and you don’t know how to talk to him, I don’t care if he’s 18 or 80, present it to him. This is my gift to you! You know, I’ve heard about that, tell me what it means. Open the door. You can’t tell the esoteric secrets. You can’t tell them how to become a member. You can’t tell any of the transactions in the lodge when the Bible is open, but you can most certainly tell them that you are a part of the most moral institution in the world. You can tell them how they can benefit from this Fraternity and the fellowship and the brotherhood that they find. I’ll leave you with this, can you see me now? Can you see me for who I am? See that man who is close to you; brother, friend, cousin, simple work companion. See him for who he is and tell him about this fraternity, and I promise you we will all reap the ben- efit. It is a custom in the great state of Tennessee, when a Grand Master travels, to present to the Grand Master a knife. I would like to present to Grand Master Todd Jones, one of my knives. You have been taught many times about the symbolism of this box, but I do not present you this because you are sitting Grand Master. I present you this because you have become my friend. I hope that when my year is done, we can find a way for our friendship to grow. Most Worshipful Grand Master, on behalf of each dignitary here, we wish you a most successful Grand Lodge Session.
