Welcome Spring and summer bring green spaces and longer days to play and be active outdoors. It’s a great time to enjoy more recreation and fitness activities in St. Albert’s plentiful parks and trails. One of the best ways to improve your health, mood, quality of life and community is to be active. The City of St. Albert’s recreation and parks department plays a major role in creating and delivering recreation and fitness activities to help shape and strengthen your life. In this issue, you’ll find ideas that are no cost, low cost, or fee-based to keep active, healthy and happy. Take a stroll through what an active day could include for families, youth and seniors. You’ll find information on the numerous spring and summer registered programs and summer camps. There’s information on new programs like the yoga workshop for you and your teenager and Stag(Ette) Sweat where bridal parties choreograph any song to dance to at the wedding. There are also many spontaneous activities that don’t require any pre-planning or registration. If you’re planning a birthday party, looking for ideas to stay active on rainy days, or wanting to book space, there is information on the City’s indoor recreation facilities as well. With hundreds of registered programs and drop-in classes, more than 99 kilometers of trails, over 110 parks and 77 playgrounds throughout the city, there truly is something for everyone. PRESCHOOL PARENTED: Come play and socialize with your child and fellow parents while participating in crafts, songs, games, activities and yoga! Perfect for ages 18 months – three years old. PRESCHOOL UNPARENTED: With everything from learning to cook, exploring nature and gaining confidence in the classroom – there’s something for every preschooler. They’ll create crafts, sing songs and develop fundamental movement skills through active play and games. CHILDREN’S: NEW Animal Crackers - A learn to cook Book your child in for an unparented yoga workshop, cooking class, or one of our Friday program for your preschooler. The class starts Fun Nights! Family Time When you think of summer you think of laughter, playfulness, soft grass, a warm breeze, barbecuing and lounging in the sun. If you’re wondering what’s new or different for you and your family to try, this guide has you covered. Below are just a few ideas for how you and the family can play and soak in all that summer has to offer. LIONS PARK Lions Park is a hub for family picnics. A large picnic shelter for groups is available to reserve or you can drop-in to one of the many picnic table and fire pit sites. A playground, open field and outdoor fitness equipment are nearby for fun activities like tag, hide-and- seek, catch and more! WOODLANDS WATER PLAY PARK The Woodlands Water Play Park presented by RE/MAX may just be one of the best family spots to let a summer day breeze by. GROSVENOR OUTDOOR POOL Dreaming of lounging, ice cream, diving board fun and a poolside picnic? Look no further than Grosvenor Outdoor Pool! The pool has been a community hot spot for over 50 years and is where you and the family can swim the day away. RED WILLOW TRAIL SYSTEM The almost endless Red Willow Trail System runs through the heart of St. Albert and connects to many beautiful parks and recreational facilities. SUMMER CAMPS KEEP THEM HEALTHY AND ACTIVE ALL SUMMER LONG. There’s a camp for all ages and interests from arts and crafts to splashing in the Landrex Water Play Centre, fun with science or cooking up a storm or playing a favourite sport with new friends. Servus Place’s popular cooking camps allow kids to cook everyday and learn the importance of eating healthy foods as they chop, cut, whisk and dice away. Enrol early as these camps fill up fast! PRESCHOOL ½ DAY: These half-day camps are perfect for your preschooler to explore, play, make crafts sing and more! Campers need a nutritious snack and must be independent in the bathroom. NEW Community Helpers - Does your little one want to learn more about the our community? In this camp, they learn about community awareness and people that make our community such a great place to live. We may even take a ride on St. Albert Transit! MEET CONNOR, A SUMMER CAMP RECREATION LEADER AT SERVUS PLACE Cooking camps have been his favourite since he first came to camp as a child. Now he teaches children to make dishes like breakfast bites and spring rolls. “I have a lot of fun when I’m here. The BMX Park requires a membership to participate in local racing and open track nights. Visit stalbertbmx.com for details. At the skateboard park riders make their way down the ramp fakie and kickflip up into the funbox! While skateboards are the most common ways to enjoy the park, inline skates, scooters and bikes are all allowed. The beach volleyball court near Woodlands Water Play Park is available for a quick match with friends. Just ask the attendants for the net and ball. The Fowler Athletic Park is open to anyone to who’d like to go for a run or to practice track and field events. The track is also prime for runners training for endurance and short and long distance events. If your teen is curious and likes to play strategy games, then geocaching may be for them. Geocaching is a popular treasure hunting pastime with many opportunities for geocachers in and around St. Albert’s trails and parks. Check out geocaching.com to learn more. During raining days, your teens can move indoors and burn off energy in the pool and gymnasium drop-in courts. on the Trails The City of St. Albert is proud to be the Botanical Arts City and has an abundance of ways to cultivate the most out of life and the outdoors. Our trails, parks, and the natural areas surrounding them have never ending possibilities to explore and discover mother nature. The Red Willow Trail System stretches down the river valley connecting to the City’s major parks. Criss-cross over and under the bridges along the river valley and stop to enjoy the views at the Children’s Bridge and Trestle Bridge. Or enjoy a leisurely cruise through Braeside and Forest Lawn Ravine. You can loop, curl, and weave in all different directions and locations throughout the City! These trails are the best way to see all that nature in St. Albert has to offer. 99 TR KM AIL OF S Take a tour on your bike, rollerblades, scooter, or go for a walk or run. Bike tune up stations are located at St. Albert Place and the Woodlands Skateboard Park, which also includes a skateboard repair station. The stations include an air pump and various tools, so you can fix a flat or tighten a bolt and get back to your play! If you are looking for new ways to explore trails and want to meet new friends, think about joining the St. Albert Trekkers Volkssport Club. The club has 148 active members and they organize event walks, guided walks and permanent trail events in St. Albert and the surrounding area. Learn more at walkalberta.ca. Curious about the history of St. Albert? Step back in time and learn about the rich culture and history that shaped our community on the Founders’ Walk. Walk from the clock tower to the Healing Garden to Father Lacombe Chapel and over to the Grain Elevator Park. Along the way are informational plaques about neat history of each landmark. Whether it’s a leisure two kilometre route around a neighbourhood or a 23 kilometre route around the entire City, just step outside and find your favourite loop. The map is also available online at stalbert.ca/rec/parks/trails/ TRAIL ETIQUETTE Remember the following rules and lead by example so the trails are safe and enjoyable for everyone: • Keep to the right of the trail except when passing or turning left and move off the trail to the right when stopping. • Exercise caution: Warn others when passing – ring your bell or call out. Be aware of proper breaking techniques. • Yield to slower moving traffic: cyclists to pedestrians, joggers to walkers. PARKS & PLAYGROUNDS The City of St. Albert is known for its parks and green spaces. With 80,000 trees and 1,370 acres of designated parkland there is no shortage of places to escape the every day bustle to exercise, play or relax amongst natural surroundings. Whether seeking a place for quiet reflection, picnics, play, exercise on outdoor sports courts or participate in team sports, with 112 parks and 77 playgrounds, you have options around every corner of the City. The City’s major parks include Riel Recreation Park, Lacombe Lake Park, Lions Park, Red Willow Park, Woodlands Park and Kingswood Park. A number of community playgrounds exist in the City like Gordon Park playground with a nature and animal theme. At Lions Park, Lafleur Park, and Leveque Park, you’ll find outdoor fitness equipment so a full body workout is possible in the great outdoors! You can find equipment like a leg press, pull up bar, captain’s chair, balance board and more! The equipment pieces are low-impact, so they are great for all fitness levels and abilities and work on upper body, lower body, and cardio strength. Natural Areas FOR MORE RUGGED ADVENTURES Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse yourself in towering trees, songbirds, local wildlife, and tranquility. These areas make wonderful locations for hiking, countryside picnics, bird and wildlife watching and nature education. Your dreams can take flight at the Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park where you will find Big Lake and a unique wetland ecosystem at the John E. Poole Interpretive Wetland. More than 235 bird species have been recorded in the area including trumpeter swans, bald eagles, pelicans and more. The park and lands surrounding it are an important habitat for moose, beavers, porcupines, and many kinds of fish and insect species. The park is bustling with wildlife activity in the spring and summer, so make sure to pack binoculars and your camera when you visit. The Grey Nuns White Spruce Forest is an ecologically and historically significant area. This designated Municipal Historic Resource is the home of many trees that are well over 100 years old, and which provide a habitat for a variety of birds, mammals, plants, and amphibians. Riverlot 56 is a natural area with two and three kilometre loop trails for hikers and bird watchers. The area contains upland aspen forests, streambed communities and open meadows which provide habitat for several wildlife species. Running through St. Albert is the Sturgeon River which is a great spot for kayaking and canoeing. The calm water makes it great for all experience levels. Access to the river is easy with a boat dock located just behind the Big Lake Environment Support Society (BLESS) Shelter at Rotary Park. St. Albert Canoe and Kayak Club provides youth and adult lessons for those wanting to learn the sport of kayaking in a safe and fun environment! Dog Parks & On/Off Leash THE PAWSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS FOR FIDO TO PLAY AND EXPLORE! Lacombe Lake Dog Park and Dodger Dog Park are large, off-leash areas designed specifically for dogs. Other off-leash areas include various designated neighbourhood parks and outdoor rinks in the summer when not in use for organized sporting activities, scheduled and authorized by the City. Your pup can play fetch, socialize with other dogs, explore in nature, run to their hearts 2 content and more! It’s also a great chance for pet owners in the community to meet and connect. Active Agers/SENIORS With healthy aging, it is important to have movement and activities in your life that add fluidity and ease to everyday living. There are many gentle and safe activities for active seniors where they can exercise, laugh with friends, and feel ageless. TRAILS Walking is essential to a healthy body and there are lots of great walking trails in St. Albert. Popular trails near St. Albert Place have some great features you can combine with your walk, including: • Low-impact outdoor fitness equipment at Lions Park near the Trestle Bridge. • Stunning views that overlook the Sturgeon River from the red Children’s Bridge. • Benches and picnic tables under beautiful towering, mature trees. • A rose garden for you to stop and smell. • Close to downtown St. Albert, which is full of neat boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants, to take a break from the heat. ST. ALBERT BOTANIC PARK Dreaming of a garden oasis to get lost in? The five-acre St. Albert Botanic Park is open from sunrise to sunset from the spring to the fall. Enjoy beautiful blooms of all different varieties as you stroll through the peaceful grounds. Displays of roses, lilies, dahlias, lilacs, peonies, flowering trees and more can be enjoyed. OUTDOORS Quick glimpses of a bluejay or flicker can turn into lasting memories with bird watching at Big Lake, the Grey Nuns White Spruce Park and other parks. Have you heard of the fun sport of pickleball. This is another great activity for the active aging group. SERVUS PLACE If it is too hot or raining outside, the Christenson Developments Track and Training Centre has a 270 metre track for walking or jogging. Spend a leisurely afternoon going for a stroll with friends, then indulge in a coffee, dessert, snack or meal at Skybox Grill, Starbucks, and Booster Juice. New this spring, the Walk This Way program offers participants professional training on how to make the most of the track. Every third Wednesday of the month until June is Swiss Chalet Seniors’ Day at Servus Place! Tables and chairs are set up on the second floor mezzanine where you can enjoy snacks, refreshments, and good conversations with friends from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Registered seniors’ programs are offered at Servus Place where you can build mobility in your joints, combat the effects of Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Disease, improve flexibility and so much more through yoga, cardio exercises and weight training.
