WINTER The City of St. Albert wants everyone to be safe by staying off rivers, lakes, ponds and stormwater management facilities (SWMF) SAFETY NEAR throughout the city during winter. These ice surfaces are unpredictable and are not safe for any type of recreational activity. ICE Special care should be taken around SWMF. They can be mistaken for a pond, but a closer look will help you understand why they aren’t safe to be on. Water is continuously flowing underneath the ice, even if it may appear completely frozen. This makes the SWMF very dangerous for walking, snowshoeing, cross- country skiing and skating. LACOMBE LAKE PARK This is the only pond in the city that is safe for walking and skating once it is opened for the public to use. When the ice is thick enough for equipment to safely scrape and clear snow, the ice gets ready for skating. To learn more about all the opportunities for skating in the City see the “Lace Up Your Skates” section starting on page 12.
