5 STRATEGIES OF CULTURALLY
RESPONSIVE TEACHING
     Activate student’s prior knowledge
 KWL chart or simply ask

     Make learning contextual
 Why is this important to me now?

 Encourage students to leverage their cultural capital
 How does your family talk about health issues?

     Reconsider classroom set up
 Do students see themselves in our presentations and materials?

     Build Relationships
 Make a connection to your audience

After reviewing student surveys and reading thank you notes, you are already
doing these things well! Let’s talk about your current practices!
PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE
In your break out session talk about:
 How do you build a relationship is such a short
      period of time?
 How do access students prior knowledge?
 How do you make the topic relatable to students?
 How do you make sure all students feel included?

 What questions do you have about cultural
responsiveness or the bigger topic cultural
intelligence? What would you like more training
    on?
