No. 15 26th May 2021 Week 4, Term 2 2021 Kia ora and welcome to this week’s newsletter. CELEBRATING LEARNING & ACHIEVEMENT A big thank you to all those who supported our annual Pink Shirt Breakfast on Friday. Special thanks also to Rise n Shine Cafe, Bakers Delight, Drury Butchers and Frenz Eggs for your donation of food for the day. It was a wonderful start to the day. We took the time to be reminded of the story about how Pink Shirt Day began and to celebrate diversity by reading a book called ‘We are all Equal’. The messages that bullying has no place at our place, continued throughout the day with some lovely buddy activities taking place that saw our senior learners working alongside our junior learners. Thank you to everyone for dressing in pink and getting behind this important cause. Funds raised from the breakfast and gold coin donations will be sent to #bullyfreenz. Congratulations to those who represented our school at the Barbarians Rugby Tournament held at Bruce Pullman Park on Sunday. The team was absolutely fantastic. They played with pride and integrity, modelling our school values. The support team and coaches did a brilliant job preparing and cheering the team on. Thanks everyone - you made us proud!
Next week we are undertaking some important health and safety training. On Tuesday the staff will be working alongside Harrison Tew, a company that specialises in emergency procedures. They will review our evacuation and lockdown procedures. Following the staff training we will undertake an exercise on Wednesday morning so that our learners have an opportunity to discuss what to expect before undertaking a lockdown/evacuation exercise. Friday 4th June is a Teacher Only Day. The staff will be using this time to undertake professional development by completing a facilitated First Aid course. This will ensure we are all accredited for a period of two years. We hope that you enjoy your extra long weekend! Good News Call of the Week: It was super exciting announcing last week's Good News Call of the Week. In another first, we made the announcement at our Annual Pink Shirt Breakfast as the whole family was there. Congratulations Isla C, you are a star. Isla has been acknowledged for being a focused learner and as a result has made great progress in her learning. Isla also shows our values of nurture (poipoi) and respect (whakaute). She uses kind words and cares for others. Thank you Isla for being a wonderful role model - we are so proud of you. Calling for 2020 Ag Day Trophies Please return all trophies from last years Ag Day in a clean and undamaged condition. Kia Ora all! Do you have a creative, artsy or crafty side? Do you have a family member or close family friend that has this quality? If you do, we need your help! We are looking for some amazing members of the community who have a passion for the arts to come in and run some lunchtime groups with our students. We are searching for those with talents in dance, music, drama, crafts, knitting, sewing etc. It would be a fantastic opportunity for our students to be exposed to a range of skills that they may otherwise never experience or so that they are able to foster a new love or passion. If you are interested in helping out please email me at brydeea@karaka.school.nz or come and speak to me before or after school. Looking forward to hearing about some of the awesome hidden talents in our community.
Karaka School Sensory Garden We are in the planning stage of creating a Sensory Garden for us all to enjoy. It will be located in the space between the Admin Block and Kotare Y1 class. The garden will be inspired by landscaping, features and installations that captivate the five human senses, and will be built around a central Geodesic Dome with adjoining zones for relaxing, learning and exploring. The school council will be overseeing this project which includes a competition to design one of the Sensory Garden Zones. Entry forms can be collected from the school office and posted into the new School Council postbox outside the office area. Good Luck!
Barbarians Tournament Bruce Pulman Win 5-1 against Chaucer School Draw 4 all against Te Hihi Loss 6-0 against Flat Bush School Some tough, physical rugby was played. Well done Karaka School on your efforts and a big thank you to Craig J and George G who trained and coached the team. Thank you to all the supporters that came along to support the team.
Inter Zone Orienteering Championships On Tuesday 18th of May I got selected to represent Karaka School at the Inter Zone Orienteering Championships held at Kuegler Farm in Bombay. It was a private farm and it took me around 24 minutes to do the whole course. There were about 23 markers to find. It was raining hard and was also really cold. My favourite part was being able to finish the course in the rain, as all the rain made it super muddy and slippery. I went back home with my really muddy shoes. I soon warmed up with a shower and a hot chocolate. It was a great day and I was glad I participated in this event. By Catherine W Karaka will be taking a tribe of young warriors to this year's 'Junior Tough Guy and Gal Challenge.' The event will take place in Hamilton on Thursday 24th June. We have space for 70 brave Year 3 - 6 learners who will travel together by bus to the event. If you think your child is up to the challenge, they can collect an entry form from the office or ask Mr Dyer for more details. Information about the event can be found here: www.eventpromotions.co.nz Mountain Biking If there are any Year 7 and 8 and competent Year 6 riders that are interested in competing in a mountain biking competition for Karaka School please email Kim Sutton—kims@karaka.school.nz For more information please go to: https://aucklandmtb.co.nz/schools/ Race Schedule: Race 1 Waitawa—Sunday 23rd May—Registration closed Race 2 Woodhill MTB Park—Sunday 27th June XCR (Relay) Race—Sunday 27th June (Woodhill) Race 3 Totara Park—Sunday 8th August Race 4 Hunua—Sunday 22nd August
NZ Bulbs spring fundraiser Thank you to everyone who ordered spring bulbs through the school (20% of the total raised is donated to the school). NZ Bulbs had hold ups with some of their imported stock and as a result the bulbs have been sent out later than usual and unfortunately there have been some “out of stocks” on some of the orders. Next year, we will make sure we order much earlier! Little Oak Lunch Friday Don’t forget to place your order by midnight tonight. Any questions/fundraising ideas or if you require uniform items urgently, you can email us on karaka.pta@gmail.com. The Karaka School PTA account is 12-3031-0851231-00 From the PTA team
