Welcome

Dear Friends,
  Season’s Greetings and Happy Holidays!
We are delighted to be celebrating this most
wonderful time of the year with you, back at
Mandel Concert Hall at Severance. As we
come together for the first time in two years
for the beloved tradition of Cleveland Orchestra
Holiday Concerts, we are even more aware
of how special these moments with family
and friends truly are. We wouldn’t be here
without the continued support of our incredible
Northeast Ohio community. Thank you.
As we strive to make your holidays a little
cheerier and more melodious, these twelve
concerts mark an important moment for
the entire Cleveland Orchestra family. They
are the first time that the Orchestra and our
all-volunteer Cleveland Orchestra Chorus — joined by the Cleveland Orchestra
Youth Chorus Chamber Ensemble, members of the Blossom Festival Chorus,
and our great community guest choruses — will be making music together
in 20 months. This is a gift we all cherish and one that would not be possible
without the tireless dedication of our musicians, staff, and volunteers.
As you continue your merriments throughout the month, I hope you’ll enjoy
our Holiday Delights: Visual Album on our streaming platform, Adella, which
features an exceptional playlist of seasonal selections by your Cleveland
Orchestra and Chorus, along with a festive video.
I also must extend our heartfelt gratitude to CIBC, the exclusive Presenting
Sponsor of The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2021 Holiday Concert series. I wish you
and your loved ones a safe and merry holiday season, and I look forward to
sharing a New Year filled with exciting possibilities.
Warmly,

André Gremillet

Bustling with activity. That’s how Pat Mallik
and her husband Singh describe the newest

“There are so, so many reasons
 we’re happy at Judson.”
chapter in their lives. After the Malliks
relocated from Seattle in 2018, their son and
  daughter-in-law quickly pointed them to
nearby Judson Park. And for Pat and Singh,
  there’s been no looking back.

  Gardening, reading, staying fit, and
  freely sharing her beauty expertise
  with neighbors are everyday
occurrences for Pat. “We’re so busy!
Just because we are retired doesn’t
mean we’re going to sit in a chair and
sleep. The exercise options are great,
people are so friendly, and help is
here if you need it,” says Pat.

Sing-Along

Away in a Manger
Audience is invited to sing-along with the first verse . . .

Away in a manger, no crib for His bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay.
Chorus and Orchestra will continue with additional verses.

                                      Joy to the World
Joy to the World, the Lord is come,
                                        let earth receive her King.
Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room,
                                        And Heav’n and nature sing,
And Heav’n and nature sing —
                                      And Heav’n, and Heaven
                                        and nature sing.

Silent Night
Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon virgin mother and child,
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

with such local partners as Colorado Ballet, Denver Young Artists Orchestra,
and El Sistema Colorado.
Mr. Mitchell served on the conducting staff of The Cleveland Orchestra
from 2013 to 2017, first as assistant conductor and from 2015 on as associate
conductor. In these roles, he led the Orchestra in several dozen concerts

Capathia Jenkins
                            Vocalist

Capathia Jenkins’s career spans the arts of acting
and music. Gripped with passion for each, she has
refused to choose — because both represent her
soul. She approaches a song the same way she
approaches a script, like an artist. She looks for
nuance in every detail, for the secrets hidden within
the notes or text — intent on taking audiences on
                            an unforgettable journey.
The Brooklyn-born Ms. Jenkins most recently released the critically acclaimed
CD Phenomenal Woman: the Maya Angelou Songs with her collaborator Louis
Rosen, and they sold out the world-famous Birdland Theatre in New York City
for three nights.
She starred as Medda in the Disney production of Newsies on Broadway.
She made her Broadway debut in The Civil War, where she created the role of
Harriet Jackson, and subsequently starred in the Off-Broadway 2000 revival
of Godspell. She returned to Broadway in The Look of Love, and created the
role of The Washing Machine in Caroline, Or Change and Frieda May in Martin
Short: Fame Becomes Me. In 2007, she went back to Off-Broadway and starred
in (mis)Understanding Mammy: The Hattie McDaniel Story for which she was
nominated for a Drama Desk Award. Her stage credits also include Nora
Ephron’s Love, Loss, and What I Wore.
As an active concert artist, Ms. Jenkins has appeared with orchestras across
North America, from Minnesota to Cleveland, from Atlanta to Seattle, and from
San Diego to Toronto, as well as appearing to acclaim in Europe. Her television
credits include 30 Rock, The Practice, Law & Order, and The Sopranos.

The Cleveland Orchestra

Now entering its second century, The Cleveland Orchestra, under the leadership
of Franz Welser-Möst since 2002, remains one of the most sought-after
performing ensembles in the world. Year after year the ensemble exemplifies
extraordinary artistic excellence, creative programming, and community
engagement. In recent years, The New York Times has called Cleveland “the
best in America” for its virtuosity, elegance of sound, variety of color, and
chamber-like musical cohesion, “virtually flawless,” and “one of the finest
ensembles in the country (if not the world).”
Founded by Adella Prentiss Hughes, The Orchestra performed its inaugural
concert in December 1918. By the middle of the century, decades of growth
and sustained support had turned the ensemble into one of the most admired
around the world.
The past decade has seen an increasing number of young people attending
concerts, bringing fresh attention to The Cleveland Orchestra’s legendary
sound and committed programming. More recently the Orchestra launched
several bold digital projects, including the streaming broadcast series In Focus,
the podcast On A Personal Note, and its own recording label.
The 2021–22 season marks Franz Welser-Möst’s 20th year as music director,
a period in which The Cleveland Orchestra earned unprecedented acclaim
around the world, including a series of residencies at the Musikverein in Vienna,
the first of its kind by an American orchestra. The Orchestra’s 100th season
in 2017-18 featured two international tours, concluding with the presentation
of Welser-Möst’s Prometheus Project, featuring works by Beethoven, on
three continents.
Its acclaimed opera presentations, including Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos
(2019), Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande (May 2017), Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin
and Bluebeard’s Castle (April 2016), and Janáček’s The Cunning Little
Vixen (2014 and 2017), have showcased the ensemble’s unique artistry and
collaborative work ethic.
Since 1918, seven music directors — Nikolai Sokoloff, Artur Rodziński, Erich
Leinsdorf, George Szell, Lorin Maazel, Christoph von Dohnányi, and Franz
Welser-Möst — have guided and shaped the ensemble’s growth and sound.
Through concerts at home and on tour, broadcasts, and a catalog of acclaimed
recordings, The Cleveland Orchestra is heard today by a growing group of
fans around the world. For more information, visit clevelandorchestra.com.
