Avenues of Service We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity. Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan. Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society. Learn more in An Introduction to Vocational Service and the Code of Conduct. Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest. Learn more in Communities in Action: A Guide to Effective Projects. International Service exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more. Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange. 2 2020-2021 Rotary District 6820 Directory www.rotary6820.org

District Governor’s Message Dear Rotarians of District 6820, I am honored and privileged to serve as your District Governor for the year 2020- 21. And what a year it will be beginning in the middle of this COVID-19 pandemic! We closed our previous year with our first-ever virtual international convention, and this year begins with social distancing with our international office closed until December 31, 2020. We will face challenges of a different world, but one that, with our continued service to our fellow man, will be a better world. In January, while attending the International Assembly required for governor training, the International President-elect, Holger Knaack, revealed the 2020-21 theme – ROTARY OPENS OPPORTUNITIES. During his address, he quoted a statement by Paul Harris, “Rotary must be revolutionary from time to time.” This theme and the Paul Harris statement could never be more appropriate than now. Rotary indeed opens doors of opportunity, and our motto of “service above self” can walk right through. When we develop service projects, even very small ones that all our members can participate in, we not only serve others but each other in fulfilling a feeling of membership and participation in the service. When members are involved, they are active members and will attract more members. But we MUST let the world know the good that our clubs do. I challenge you all to have several projects often and with various members involved. We can all participate in a district-wide project. And then, let’s publicize it! This will be how we attract new members and keep those we have. The doors of opportunity are wide open, so let’s get everyone involved and let the world see what we can do! We are compelled to be revolutionary now because of social media and meetings with “Zoom.” And it is a challenge for us. But let us use this technology to our advantage. Be creative with projects. Involve more people. And get the results on social media. Please use this directory to find those on this district level that can assist you with technology as well as all other areas of Rotary life. I want to encourage you to have fun being a Rotarian, and during this epidemic, one of the best ways to have fun is to participate in a Rotary community service project. I look forward to working with you to continue the Rotary tradition in District 6820 and the world. Yours in Rotary Service, District Governor 2020-2021 (601) 946-8065 (mobile) edthurmond42@gmail.com 4 2020-2021 Rotary District 6820 Directory www.rotary6820.org
Rotary International President R. I. PRESIDENT HOLGER KNAACK PRESIDENT 2020-2021 ROTARY CLUB OF HERZOGTUM LAUENBURG-MÖLLN, GERMANY Dear fellow Rotarians: Ask any Rotarian what led them to Rotary, and you’ll usually get different answers. Why? Not only does Rotary mean different things to members in different parts of the World, it also has a unique meaning for each Rotarian. However, we are all brought together in three important ways. We believe in Rotary values and all share the same Four Way Test. We believe in friendships and love spending time together. And we take great satisfaction in helping others – we are committed to Service. The District Board has assumed important responsibilities and I thank them for this hard work. They have made a commitment to help grow Rotary, adapt to the digital future and make Rotary more appealing to younger generations. We have important work in front of us and so many opportunities to open for others and ourselves. I hope you will continue your journey with us, as we continue to serve our communities so that future generations can thrive as Rotary Opens Opportunities. Regards, Holger Knaack President, Rotary International 2020-21 www.rotary6820.org 2020-2021 Rotary District 6820 Directory 5

Paul P. Harris - The Founder of Rotary Paul P. Harris (1868-1947) was the founder of Rotary, the world’s first and most international service club. He was born in Racine, Wisconsin, on April 19, 1868. Paul married Jean Thomson Harris (1881-1963). They had no children. He received the bachelor of physical culture and LL.B degrees from the University of Vermont and the LL.D degree from the University of Iowa. He was awarded an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Vermont in 1933. Paul worked as a newspaper reporter, a business teacher, stock company actor, and a cowboy. In 1896, he went to Chicago to practice law. In 1900 during an after-dinner stroll with a professional friend in a residential Chicago neighborhood, Paul was impressed by the fact that his friend stopped at several stores and shops in the neighborhood and introduced him to various tradesmen in their stores. This reminded Paul of his New England village and it occurred to him: “Why not have a fellowship composed of businessmen from different occupations, without restriction of politics or religion?” He resolved to organize a club that would band together a group of representative business and professional men in friendship and fellowship. In February 1905, Paul Harris formed the first club with three of his law clients - Silvester Schiele, a coal merchant, Gustavus Loehr, a mining engineer, and Hiram Shorey, a merchant tailor. Because the group’s meeting locations rotated from one member’s place of business to the next, Harris christened his new club “Rotary.” The second Rotary club was founded in San Francisco in 1908. In August 1910, when there were 16 clubs, the National Association of Rotary Clubs was organized. By 1921, the organization was represented on every continent, and in 1922, they adopted the name Rotary International. Paul Harris’ dream, the Rotary Club, has continued to grow and expand over the years. The burgeoning movement in Asia, and the over 220 clubs in Eastern Europe, are extending Paul Harris’s ideals of friendship, community service, education, and peace across the world. www.rotary6820.org 2020-2021 Rotary District 6820 Directory 9
