Crowland Town Magazine
Dear Reader,
Happy New Year.
As I write we are still governed by COVID lockdown restrictions with more stringent
restrictions due to be introduced before this issue reaches you. A number of our
contributors refer to the impact of the restrictions on their businesses or events.
Due to the time needed to get from drafts to magazine production and delivery, please
check with the various organisers before travelling to any event advertised.
We continue to be supported by those organisations that are permitted to and are able
to stay open and we remain very grateful to them. A list of those businesses etc that
we have received nominations for is included again – if there are others that deserve
inclusion please let me know.
                                                           Best regards and stay safe,
                                                                  Paul Bywater, Editor.
Please forward any comments or items for inclusion in the magazine
to town.magazine@byteck.co.uk or hand in to Classic Printers.
The cost of personal notices are £5 and need to be sent in by 15th of
                               the preceding month.
For any other advertising please contact Jen on 210749

                  THE LIBRARY AT CROWLAND HUB
                                  website www.crowlandhub.com
                We’re OPEN, We’re CLOSED, We’re OPEN, We’re CLOSED, We’re part
OPEN, We’re CLOSED. It’s like being at a Barn dance and waiting for the caller to give
the next instructions. We want to dance on but at the same time we’re getting tired
and dizzy. The thing is, it’s no different for us at The Hub than it must be for all the
shopkeepers and those trying to run their businesses during this difficult time. We will
get up and dance again at some point and, when we do, we hope you will value the
library service we residents fought hard to keep available in this town.
It’s not the most beautiful building from the outside but step in and you will find a warm
welcome, helpful staff, an interesting local history section, and a delightful children’s
section.
Talking of helpful staff, if you’re looking forward to getting out and about again and
mixing with the community, when that time comes why not think about becoming a Hub
volunteer? We are always looking for library assistants and people to serve in Togs ‘n’
Cloggs, our fundraising shop.
                                                                                          1

CHAIRMANS MESSAGE:
Unfortunately, the New Year finds us in yet another National lockdown and the situation
looks very grim but on the positive we have now got the long awaited vaccine. With regard
to this, we can offer transport to the Vaccination Centre whether that be at the GP Surgery
or elsewhere through our South Holland Parish Voluntary Car Scheme if you are not able
to get there by other means. Following contact by the GP Surgery to arrange your vaccine
appointment please contact us on the above number should you need transport. There
is a charge for this service. We will do our best to accommodate everyone who needs
transport but we do only have 4 active volunteer drivers at this time.
Following on from my report in the last Magazine about our involvement with Covid Assist,
we are still working closely with them and we can also be contacted should you require
any assistance in this present lockdown in addition to them.
I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to Lorna Smith and
Classic Printers for the donation following the sale of the Gardens of Crowland Calendar.

COVID-19 VACCINE SCAMS
We have been made aware of fake NHS text messages circulating, informing the public
that they are eligible for Covid-19 Vaccine. The scam message reads “We have identified
that you are eligible to apply for your vaccine” which prompts you to click on a link
to find out more and to “apply” for the vaccine. The link directs you to a convincing
fake NHS website, where fraudsters can coerce you to divulge personal or financial
details. If you do get a notification, please check with your Doctor’s Surgery first. Cold
calls that ask you to provide personal or financial details or ask you to pay over the phone
to access the vaccine have also been reported. If you receive one of these calls, hang
up immediately. The vaccine is NOT available for anyone to purchase no matter how rich
they are. Any texts or emails containing URLs should always be treated with caution and
urge members of the public to avoid clicking links in unsolicited texts or emails. Texts or
emails that ask you to provide information such as your name, date of birth or financial
details are scams and if you’re ever unsure about these types of messages, ignore or
delete them. If you think you have been a victim of a scam or know of someone who has
fallen victim to an online fraud:
Contact your bank immediately to tell them what’s happened.
Report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online.

News & Fundraising
We were recently contacted by Lincolnshire Co-operative stores to let us know
that a cheque from our local Community Champion placement would be on its
way shortly. We don’t know how much we will get yet but are very excited at the
thought of putting the money to good use on a special project we have been
hoping to do for some time – watch this space.

                                     Thank You
As we all find ourselves in our third lockdown of the last 10 months we would
like to say a big thank you to everybody who continues to support us - as we try
to ensure we provide a safe, welcoming and exciting environment for our
children during these challenging times. This includes our parents for their help
and understanding during this difficult, constantly changing scenario and those
amongst our local community and beyond who cheer us on and cheer us up
with kind words, gestures and donations of new resources.

                     What we are learning
We are finding pleasure in exploring the outside world as
much as possible and learning from the wonders of Mother

how many different visitors we had to our woodland garden,

for eligible 2 year olds - visitors by appointment.

A s we start the new year in another lockdown, I'd just like
to begin on a positive note. We owe a huge debt of gratitude
to our amazing community! Since March 2020 together we
have fed well over 130 people across over 50 households,
offering many of them ongoing support to present day. We
have found carpets, appliances, rugs, clothes, Christmas
trees and decorations for people who have approached us
in need. We have provided 44 households with Christmas
hampers, including cupboard staples, Christmas treats, toys for children, small
gifts for adults and fresh meat. Together we have achieved more than l ever
thought possible! The generosity of everyone that has helped us has been truly
humbling, and at times emotional. Christmas was a testing time - I dread to think
how many volunteer hours were put in over October, November and December,
but the kindness of the town and the wonderful messages of thanks that came in
as the hampers were distributed made it all worthwhile. I must give special thanks
to everyone that has volunteered over the last few months. This started as such
a tiny operation but now we have a fantastic team that keeps everything running
smoothly no matter what the pandemic throws at us. Everyone has given so much
of their time to help others and honestly none of it would be possible without you.
As 2021 proves to be another year of challenges we would like to just take the
opportunity to remind you that if you are facing financial hardship we are here.

                                                       or challenge your abilities.
                                                       This challenge will run from
                                                       the beginning of January
to the end of March and we
have put a few ideas together on what you could be doing in the coming days, weeks
or months.
• Cycle or run the distance between our Hospice bases, Total: 185 miles (296km).
• Walk 12,000 steps a day for a week. Did you know this is the average steps a day our
nurses take when providing end of life compassionate care?
However, that’s not to say that challenge is the right one for you. You can make up your
own challenge if you wish and set yourself some new year goals and achievements
while fundraising for the hospice.
We will be providing loads of support throughout this challenge and this will be done
through our Adventures with St Barnabas Fundraising page on Facebook, where you
can talk to other people taking on a challenge and post your progress. We also have
sponsorship support with David Poole custom fitness, Reece Dodd PT and Active
Lincolnshire. All providing inspiring and motivational support along the way.
This challenge is completely free of charge all we ask in return is that each participant
fundraises a minimum of £71.40. This covering over two hours of vital physiotherapy or
occupational therapy sessions for our patients. Often when a patient is diagnosed and
is referred to our services, they have limited movement. Our Clinical team work closely
to support their wellbeing and make sure they live as comfortably as possible, for as
long as possible.

Happy February Everyone.
At least vaccines are now well on their way to help combat Covid 19! Have you had
yours yet? With this in mind we can now look forward to being able to meet again Face
to Face and the end of Lockdown!
As soon as we are able, we shall be meeting at The Scout and Guide Hut on Thorney
Road.
Several members have been able to join in our Zoom Meetings and prior to Christmas
all members were given an Amaryllis bulb to plant and grow. We have had photos of
results so far and some grew a lot quicker than others. Technology isn't for everyone
and we so miss our regular meetings. This month is our Annual Meeting when we select
our Committee for the next 12 months. We hope that members will be able to join in via
Zoom again if we are still in Lockdown.

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY
Hopefully with the increased Covid 19 vaccinations the dreadful spread of the disease will be
curbed, and we can look forward to meetings with our friends and family once again, and enjoy
attending our clubs, societies and groups again. As a family historian I am aware that our country
has faced dark days before. But we have always overcome and moved on to good days. So, I look
forward with a positive attitude.
HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED
The NHS has been at the centre of our attention in the past year with the Covid 19 pressures, and
now the vaccinations. What would we do without it?
Well, we did have to manage without it before it was established in 1947. Everyone had to pay
for the services of doctors, nurses and midwives. There were many kitchen cupboard cures and
remedies for our illnesses. In the days when you had to pay to see the doctor, it was important
to have a range of trusted remedies for everyday illnesses: honey and lemon for coughs; goose
grease and brown paper poultices for a bad chest; burnt toast for tummy aches – all had their
place.
A link to what we are being told now about keeping places well ventilated. In the past the advice
was ‘Open your windows both top and bottom The fresh air rushes in at the bottom, while the foul
escapes at the top. This is called letting your friend in and expelling your enemy’! Dandelion root
boiled in water was given for a sluggish state of the liver. Onions were used frequently as a cure
for aliments. Cut an onion in half and rub it on chilblains. For baldness rub onions frequently on the
parts needed. Children were told various of things to do for their bumps and bruises.
Put vinegar on it! I remember falling down a bank into a bed of stinging nettles, my grandmother
put me in a bath full of vinegar and warm water to sooth the pain. Comfrey helped to soothe bumps
and bruises. Dock leaves spat on and rubbed onto stings. Blue bag rubbed on bee strings. When
all else fails ‘Kiss it better’. Coming from a beekeeper’s family I still use the honey & lemon in hot
water remedy for sore throats and coughs.
At schools during the war years children lined up to be given a spoonful of cod liver oil and of malt.
Sometimes it was combined by the brand name of Virol making it more acceptable to the taste.
To save time the same spoon would be used for every child! Rosehip syrup was another remedy to
keep colds at bay. Pocket money could be earned by collecting the rosehips from the hedgerows.
The fruit would be taken to school and weighed; the child would be paid according to the weight
of rosehips collected. Another favourite was a ‘hot toddy’ a mixture including whisky which is still
a favourite.
Scientists have made an important discovery regarding avoiding winter colds. The researchers at
Pennsylvania University found that happy people are three times less likely to succumb to a cold.
So, remember, laughter is by far the best medicine!
OUR HELP & RESEARCH SESSIONS & MEETINGS
AOur researchers are still available and willing to give advice and answer your queries. In
addition, they are willing to research your family history for you, we just need a few details. One
of our researchers has been helping a gentleman find out about his two uncles, who served in
the Great War. One died in 1918 the other in 1920. Finding their military records gave an insight to
their service years. If you would like help researching your family just give Bridget Hunter a call
on 01945 587723.
As soon as we are able, we will restart offering monthly meetings with interesting speakers and
research sessions. For further information call 01945 587723.

CROWLAND
 COMMUNITY CHILDCARE
             Established 1968

What the children have been learning
Welcome back and Happy New Year from everyone at
               Crowland Community Childcare.
This month we are concentrating on safety by looking at our fire
safety, emergency evacuation and critical incident plans. Children
and staff are discussing and practicing with role play, as some of
our parents are being busy being front line workers. Such as
ambulance drivers, care home workers and NHS Workers.

                           Thank you
A very big thank you to Harry Beecroft and his family, for the lovely
gift of a wonderful scrapbook. It is something we will treasure for
years to come, giving us all a reminder of all the lovely home
learning, Zoom story times and hard work of the staff during our
                 lockdown journey during Covid19

Home learning packs have now
                                           Term Dates
been delivered to help children Term 3 - 4th January until
at home. Where parents have 12th February
chosen to stay away from the Term 4 - 22nd February until
setting during this lockdown. 31st March
