Backpacking School May 20 to 22, 2022 Camp Kiesel Event Description/Considerations The Patrols will go through games and instruction to gain skills to go on an overnight or extended backpacking trip. Even if you never go backpacking all of these skills are necessary for being a good camper and outdoor citizen A few things to note about the camp, 1 Camps will be filled in on a first come first served basis. 2 Fires in fire barrels only. 3 We will utilize all camping spots available in the camp 4 Cars will be allowed in camp to drop off gear, but no cars will be allowed to park inside the camp. 5 You will also be assigned a service duty to ensure that camp is clean. 6 There is no refunds due to weather or no shows. 7 Troops will be responsible for their own food. 8 The Scout Law is the Law of this camp. 9 Troops please elect 2 members of the troop to be Chaplains Aides. They will be responsible to help the Camp Chaplain plan the Scout's Own Meeting on Sunday. 10 Please see the Scouts Needs page for what will be needed for each Scout, Patrol, or Troop. 11 Bring Patrol spirit with you. Uniforms, Patrol calls, yells, cheers, and flags. 12 Please follow the current COVID-19 guidelines and be safe. 13 Troops are responsible for their own basic First Aid, any large emergencies please contact 911. 14 There will be a camp get together on Saturday night. This will be a time for you to bring games and be together. The cost $7.00 per person for early bird registration. Walk-in's will be $10.00 per person. Walk-ins are not guaranteed to receive patches. The registration fees pay for patches, ribbons, and the camp site. This event will fill up so please plan on registering early.

Backpacking School May 20 to 22, 2022 Camp Kiesel Game Rules These are the rules that will be followed for the games. Games 1 Orienteering The troop will be allowed to walk the pace course to figure out how many paces it takes to walk 100 feet. They then will be given paces and bearings to an end point. The troop is scored based upon how close they get to the end point. 2 Map Orientation The troop will use a compass and orient a topographical map properly. This is a timed event. 3 Shelter Building The troop will be given items and allowed to use any found items to build a shelter. This is a timed event. 4 Fire Starting The troop will bring in tinder and small fuel wood to build a fire. The fire will need to last 5 minutes. Once five minutes has elasped the time will start and end once the flames go out. 5 Pack the lightest but still The troop will chose a location and then given a packing list to go backpacking with. The pack is Survive limited by weight, The group that chooses the correct equipment and is the lightest will win. 6 Poisonous Plant ID The troop will be shown pictures of plants and need to identify the one that are poisonous to the touch. Score given for correct answers. 7 Camp Selection The troop will be shown pictures of sites and determine the sites that are most suited to camping. The troop will be scored on correct answers. Sites based upon leave no trace and the best sites to withstand the weather. 8 Cook a Meal The troop will be given the ingredients to make a breakfast. The troop will be scored on time. 9 Bear Bag The troop will be given the items or may use found items to build a shelterthat fits four people. The troop will be judged by time. 10 Map Symbol Quiz The troop will be shown pictures of map symbols to identify. Score is given for correct answers. 11 Ten Essentials The troop will be asked to give the list of items on the ten essentials. This is a timed quiz.
