Welcome Dear all, Following the inaugural Cricket Builds Hope Tournament and successful opening of the Gahanga Stadium, 2019 will be an important year for us. A key element will be the 3rd edition of the Cricket Builds Hope Tournament, to which you are warmly invited. The event will be a special occasion and include once in a lifetime experiences for your team. Please take a look through this brochure to see what will taking place. By entering the tournament, you will be contributing to the growth of cricket in Rwanda and beyond. I am pleased to let you know that our travel partners for the tournament, Sporta Tours, are on hand to arrange your trip to Rwanda, having worked with us to deliver the inaugural event in 2017. Between us and Sporta, we have negotiated preferential rates across the tour to combine flights, hotel, team transfers, match meals, team liaison and ATOL bonding into one exclusive package for teams and supporters. Details of the package are listed in this brochure. If you would like to extend your stay to explore more of Rwanda, book gorilla treks, select alternative flights, or anything else, please get in contact with Sporta Tours. This can either be as a group or on an individual basis - Sporta's model is a completely bespoke and personalised service. I hope you are excited about attending and I look forward to welcoming you to Rwanda in October. Best regards, Richard Nicoll, Chairman (Pictured 4th from left alongside the charity’s trustees at the Cricket Builds Hope Tournament in 2017)
So far… In 2007, Christopher Shale (top-left) first visited Rwanda to work on a social action project in Kigali. A team of 43 volunteers spent two weeks working alongside communities still recovering from the 1994 genocide. Those with specific skills were given tasks in the education, health, justice, community and private sectors alongside local partners such as SURF, a 'survivors fund' supporting survivors of the Rwandan genocide. The result is a tangible, lasting legacy in Rwanda. Christopher played a central role in the project's success, volunteering each summer from 2007 until 2010. He was a former British Army Officer, businessman, Chairman of the West Oxfordshire Conservative Association and cricket enthusiast. His untimely death in the summer of 2011 came shortly after he had begun working on the idea of building a much needed home for Rwandan cricket. Christopher witnessed the growth in enthusiasm for cricket in the country, and realised that facilities were sorely lacking. The Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation continues in Christopher's memory. "Christopher loved Rwanda and he loved cricket. It was with pride that he watched Alby Shale (his son, top-right) play cricket against a Rwandan side, and he instantly saw how the game brought joy to the people of a country with such a troubled past. It was typical, both of his desire to help others and his ability to think big, that rather than bemoaning a lack of facilities, he came up with this ambitious plan to raise money to build a proper home for cricket in Rwanda. It fell to us to realise his vision. This vision was realised in 2017, with the official launch of the Gahanga Stadium and the Cricket Builds Hope charity, but this is only the beginning…
Cricket in Rwanda Cricket first came to Rwanda after the 1994 genocide. In the months and years that followed the atrocities, thousands of Rwandans, having grown up playing cricket in exile in nearby countries such as Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, came home to rebuild their lives in the land of their ancestors. In 1999 a small number of former exiles founded the Rwanda Cricket Association (RCA), and in 2003 Rwanda became an Affiliate Member of the International Cricket Council. The first cricket ground in Rwanda was created on the site of the infamous massacre portrayed in the award-winning film, Shooting Dogs. Before a ball could be bowled, the two metre-high grass was cut, revealing the remains of victims. Thousands of young Rwandans, both male and female, now play cricket in orphanages, primary and secondary schools and universities, with a club league, three club tournaments and schools and university competitions making up an eleven month formal cricketing calendar. In 2010 the U19 girls' team beat regional heavyweights Kenya; in 2011 the men’s team won the ICC Africa Division 3 Championships; in the same year two of Rwanda's most promising female cricketers were selected by the ICC to attend a training clinic in South Africa. Playing numbers exceed 4,500, and they now, thanks to Cricket Builds Hope, have an international stadium in Gahanga. Recently, Rwanda was awarded the rights to host the East Africa Qualifiers for the Cricket World Cup in June 2018. There is so much cricketing talent and potential in Rwanda, and we hope to provide a platform from which it can flourish.
Rwanda Rwanda is a country recovering rapidly from the catastrophic genocide of 1994. With beautiful countryside, impressive infrastructure, clean & litter free streets and forward thinking policies such as bans on disposable plastic bags, it is a country to take notice of and one for other African nations to follow the example of. In an effort to align itself with the East African Community and Anglophone world, Rwanda changed its official language from French to English in 2008 and a year later became a member of the Commonwealth. In September 2008 Rwanda became the first nation in the world to elect a majority of women MPs: 45 out of 80 MPs. 1 million Rwandans emerged out of poverty between 2007 and 2012 (out of a population of 11 million). In 2012, the World Bank ranked Rwanda the 45th easiest place for doing business in the world, the top ranking in Africa. It's also home to wildlife such as the mountain gorilla, African elephants, lions, chimpanzees and more.
