An Introduction United World Schools’ (UWS) mission is to bring the ability to read, write and count to as many children in unreached, remote areas as possible. This is done in the recognition that education has the power to fundamentally change the life chances of those children the charity reaches. Thanks to UWS’s teams in Myanmar, Cambodia and Nepal and their donors and supporters, over 20,000 children have now seen the inside of a UWS classroom and the charity has almost doubled in size every year since 2013. Yet UWS knows that there are far too many children who are still not able to learn to read, write and count. In April 2014, the charity launched its Transforming 50,000 Lives Campaign – with a clear focus on putting 50,000 children and young adults into a UWS School. Today, the charity is almost half-way there. Having started out as a family-founded organisation, the Board and Chief Executive now feel ready to gear-up the charity to reach even more out-of-school children. This role is business-critical in achieving that transition. 3
The Opportunity A newly created role, the Development Director will play a critical leadership role in the relatively small UK team of smart, driven and talented individuals. The organisation comprises ambitious, ‘can-do’ people, be it in the UK or overseas. The organisational culture encourages people to work at pace, be agile in their approach and to support and challenge one another, whilst sharing a heartfelt commitment to delivering for the cause. Reporting into the CEO, the Development Director will significantly increase the charity’s fund-raising capability and capacity, as well as its marketing and PR. He or she will lead two small teams led by a Director of Fundraising and a Partnerships Director. With ambition, energy and drive, the Development Director will help UWS hit its target of raising £5m annually by 2021. Thereafter, he or she will build the capacity of the team further so that the organisation can move to an annual target of £10 million and beyond as soon as possible. This role is based in the UK, with regular international travel as required. UWS knows that these are ambitious targets, but also believes that with the right approach and expertise, these targets are realistic because there are currently some core areas of fundraising that are as yet untapped. 4
Budget and Fund-Raising The cost of educating a child through the UWS model is In 2015 UWS formed a core professional team and its income incredibly low, commonly less than £1 per week per student saw a significant increase to £950k. This trend has continued, once the UWS School is established. UWS has operated with with UWS’ revenue for 2016 ahead of budget at £1.9m; minimal central administration and, historically, has been income was generated through a portfolio of school predominantly funded by private donations and through partnerships, donations from high net-worth individuals, support from the partner schools. corporate sponsorship, and grants from trusts and foundations, including Educate a Child, its major co-funder. In order to reach more children and expand their work, UWS is seeking £12-15m of funding to achieve their 2019-2021 goals Further growth in 2017 saw income increase to £2.6m of improving life opportunities for over 50,000 children (exceeding the team stretch target), including a Gala Dinner through education. that raised over £450k.
