Who are we? Natural Resources South East NRM Education program is an integrated program which offers free activities and support to schools in the South East region. Our goal is to build a community that is well informed, empowered to take action and has the ability to adapt to change. NRM Education is funded by the NRM levy, supporting youth and educators to become leaders in the community and play an active role in natural resource management. “Supporting education and community action for environmental sustainability” What is NRM? It stands for Natural Resource Management - Vanessa Freebairn the management of the region’s environment. Environmental Education This includes: soil, pest plants & animals, water, Coordinator coast & marine environments. 2019 Highlights National Science Week The NRM Education team engaged with OVER 1600 STUDENTS provided an opportunity for around 100 OVER 600 STUDENTS engaged in education sessions both in the classroom and on site, covering topics STUDENTS such as water in our landscape, invasive weeds, indigenous plant propagation, marine debris and coastal land formations and habitats. to dive into what it means to be a scientist, focusing on the significance of macroinvertebrates and their role in water ecosystems. Young Environmental Leaders Program (YELP) The Young Environmental Leaders Program (YELP) is open to four students per school in Years 5-7. YELP provides a great mix of hands on environmental experiences, project work and leadership development. The 2020 program will include a forum in each Term including a 2 night/2 day Earthkeepers Camp in Term 2. The final forum will be an expo style presentation of each of the school’s projects. Students who took part in YELP in 2019 will not be eligible to attend this year but can mentor this year’s participants. Note: If you are unable to confirm the nominated students at the time of lodging the YELP Registration 2020 form please submit the form indicating the number of students attending and provide the updated details once they have been confirmed. Secondary School support with Problem-based Learning Natural Resources South East has developed a list of STEM linked problem-based learning questions around our regional priorities of water, pest plants and animals, soil and biodiversity. Email Natasha Dawson – natasha.dawson@sa.gov.au for the list and we can support your chosen question(s) with organising a speaker(s) to visit your class to discuss the topic. Why not follow up with a field trip then invite us back to watch the student’s present on their findings once they have explored the question? Book in for our Invasive Weeds Immersion Sessions in Term 3 Explore the following question with your class and immerse them in an outdoor session with hands on activities What is a weed and do they really have an impact on our environment? Work Experience Program Are your students interested in our region’s natural resources and want a career that makes a difference? When: Two weeks will be available in 2020 - How do students apply? Term 2, Week 9 & Term 3, Week 4 There are only 6 places available for each week. Youth Environment Council The state Youth Environment Council (YEC) is a joint initiative between Department for Education (DE) and the Adelaide Mt Lofty Ranges NRM Board. It brings together students from across SA with a keen environmental interest, who take part in camps, online workshops and forums throughout the year. This aims to give students the skills and knowledge to run their own environmental projects in their local community. Connecting with our Landscape Events Involve your students in immersion experiences to connect with their landscape. Water in our Landscape USE Term 1 Week 8 Tuesday 17th March Salt Creek (Coorong National Park) • Open to years 5 - 9 for schools in the Tatiara/Wrattonbully Partnership area • Classes will enjoy a 5.5km walk stopping at three education stations on the way • Contribution to bus funding support available • Places are limited, please contact Natasha - natasha.dawson@sa.gov.au March in May – Explore our coastal landscape Term 2 Week 2 Wednesday 6th May Canunda National Park • Open to year 6/7 classes in the Lower/Mid SE region • 8.5km walk around the park stopping at four education stations on the way. National Water Week – Learn about water in the SE landscape Term 4 Week 1 Lower SE Location: Piccaninnie Ponds Conservation Park – Tues 13th Oct Upper SE Location: Bool Lagoon Conservation Park – Wed 14th Oct • Open to all year levels • Classes will explore the importance of water in our landscape with local NRM staff during a walk and talk. Teacher Professional Development In 2020 we will be exploring our South East landscapes through teacher professional development information sessions and field trips. Landscapes of the South East An educational guide for the landscapes of the SE of SA Term 1 Week 4, Wednesday 19th February, 4-6pm Location: Naracoorte • Come and explore our new teaching resource and learn about our region’s geology & hydrogeology, wetlands, drainage and biodiversity. • Recommended for Yr 7-12 teachers, each participant will receive a copy of the resource and set of 6 posters. Water in our Landscape - Lower South East Term 3 Week 7 Saturday 5th September (TBC) Location: Start at Mt Gambier • Join us for a bus trip from Mt Gambier to the Coast exploring our region’s groundwater, wetlands, drainage system and coastal ecology. Potential field trips and activities will be highlighted and content will be linked to the Australian Curriculum. Teaching with an Indigenous Perspective Our natural environment has strong links with local Indigenous culture, which is why the cross curriculum priorities of Sustainability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures are so closely related and can be addressed together. To book our ‘Teaching with an Indigenous Perspective’ kit phone 8735 1108 or email damien.bickley@sa.gov.au The kit includes a selection of local books, DVD’s and Indigenous artefacts, as well as locally specific bush food cards and posters.
