COVID CASE REPORTING & EXPECTATIONS:
TRENT STUDENTS
The health and safety of our Trent community are foremost in all of the University’s considerations and
plans. This document provides guidance to all Trent students on the steps they must take in a variety of
scenarios, when possible exposure to COVID-19 is suspected, or when a positive COVID-19 result is
confirmed.

Vaccination Requirement
All students, staff and faculty must be fully vaccinated or have an approved accommodation for
exemption to continue coming to campus. The University is reviewing our vaccine policy and third dose
boosters are strongly recommended for all members of the Trent community. Those who are not fully
vaccinated must have an approved accommodation and complete Trent’s vaccine education module and
participate in rapid antigen testing at least twice weekly (and test negative) to continue coming to
campus.

Mandatory Daily Screening
Whether you’re coming to campus to study, attend a class, or use lab space, you must complete Trent’s
mandatory COVID-19 Screening Tool each day before you leave your house or residence room. The
screening tool can be accessed at trentu.ca/screen or through the Trent Mobile App under the Trent
Forward section. Only come to campus if you PASS the screening. If you are a student living on campus,
and do not pass the screening, contact your don immediately.

Face Mask Policy
Face coverings must be worn in all indoor spaces at the University, as well as outdoors where physical
distancing cannot be maintained.

Potential COVID Case Scenarios & Steps
In all scenarios outlined below, the University will follow the Public Health directives and provincial
guidelines. It is important to note that, as privileged medical information, a diagnosis of COVID-19 is
considered confidential. As such, the University will never release identifying information of an
individual who tested positive for COVID-19.

In accordance with provincial guidelines, postsecondary institutions (including residences) are not
currently considered “highest-risk settings” and Public Health is no longer able to confirm cases linked to
the University. As such, and following guidance from Public Health, Trent is no longer reporting
confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the Trent Forward dashboard.

Updated: February 2022 1
The scenarios and steps outlined in this document are informed by the Province’s COVID-19 Integrated
Testing & Case, Contact and Outbreak Management Interim Guidance: Omicron Surge as well as the
provincial Isolation Guidelines and/or Self-Monitoring Guidelines.

Individuals with symptoms, or with household contacts who have symptoms, are asked to refer to the
Government of Ontario’s Exposure Guidelines to determine appropriate action.

If you are contacted by Public Health, you must follow all direction provided by your local Public
Health authority.

Scenario #1: I am displaying symptoms consistent with COVID-19 and have not been to campus within
the past 48 hours.

      • Follow the direction provided by the provincial self-assessment tool and Public Health.
      • If told to stay home/self-isolate proceed to Scenario #2.
      • If you are a student living in residence, stay in your room and contact your don or the Housing
team to discuss next steps for potential testing, isolation and other supports.

Scenario #2: I live in residence AND I have been told to isolate, I have symptoms consistent with
COVID-19 and /or I have tested positive for COVID-19 (rapid antigen testing or PCR).
      • Do not leave your residence room.
      • Contact your don or Housing Services immediately and follow all directions on isolation and
          testing, as required.
      • Inform any close contacts of potential exposure directly and direct them to
Ontario.ca/exposed. A close contact is anyone you were less than 2m away from for at least
15 min without PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in the 48 hours before your symptoms
began or your positive result was confirmed.
      • If you have in-person classes on campus, see Scenario #4.

Scenario #3: I live off campus (and have not been to campus within the last 48 hours) and I have been
told to isolate, I have symptoms consistent with COVID-19, and/or I have tested positive for COVID-19
(rapid antigen testing or PCR).
      • Do not come to campus.
      • Follow public health guidelines on isolation.
      • Reach out to Student Affairs, your college principal, or an academic advisor for support.
      • Fully vaccinated:
o Isolate for five days following the onset of symptoms.
o End isolation after five days if symptoms are improving for at least 24 hours, or 48
hours for gastrointestinal symptoms, and all public health and safety measures, such
as masking and physical distancing, are followed.
                                 • If you have access to rapid antigen tests, and test negative on two
tests taken 24-48 hours apart, you can stop isolating before five
days have passed once you have no fever and symptoms have
improved for at least 24 hours (48 hours if presenting with
                                     gastrointestinal symptoms).

o All household members must also isolate for the same duration as you, unless they
have previously tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 90 days and are currently
                      asymptomatic.
         • Unvaccinated, partially vaccinated or immunocompromised
o Isolate for 10 days following the onset of symptoms.
o End isolation after 10 days if symptoms are improving for at least 24 hours, or 48
hours for gastrointestinal symptoms, and all public health and safety measures, such
as masking and physical distancing, are followed.
                                   • If you have access to rapid antigen tests, and test negative on two
tests taken 24-48 hours apart, you can stop isolating before 10 days
have passed once you have no fever and symptoms have improved
for at least 24 hours (48 hours if presenting with gastrointestinal

positive for COVID-19 in the past 90 days.

Scenario #4: I have in-person classes (and have attended a class, lab, or seminar within the last 48
hours) AND I have been told to isolate, I have symptoms consistent with COVID-19, and /or I have
tested positive for COVID-19 (rapid antigen testing or PCR).
         • If you have tested positive for COVID-19, complete the COVID-19 Testing Self-reporting form
for students who have attended in-person classes. The University may use the information to
notify your instructor and class of a potential exposure to COVID-19. Your privacy will be
              protected.
         • If you are missing a class or lab where no evaluation (test, assignment, midterm, exam, etc.)
is scheduled, you should request notes from a fellow student or from course note taker, if
there is one. Instructors are not obligated to make notes or recordings for all in-person
              classes available.
         • If you are missing an assignment/test/midterm/exam (or other evaluation piece of the course
that has an impact on your final grade), contact your instructor.
o Your instructor(s) will work with you to discuss alternatives.
o Please note that adjustments and deferrals are not automatic, and you will need to
discuss options with your instructor(s) directly.

risk setting such as a hospital, long-term care home, retirement home, congregate living
           setting).

Scenario #8: I have an on-campus job and have worked a shift in the last 48 hours AND have tested
positive for COVID-19 or am displaying symptoms consistent with COVID-19.

   • Inform your supervisor; submit a private self-declaration form to Human Resources. Your
           confidentiality will be maintained.
   • Follow public health guidelines on isolation.
   • Do not return to campus until you have been advised it is safe to do so.
   • Transition to working remotely if able, and you are feeling well enough to do so, or talk to HR or
your supervisor/manager about options for sick leave.
   • The area where you work may be temporarily restricted for cleaning and sanitization, and any
colleagues who may be determined to be at an elevated risk may be informed of a potential
exposure in the workplace and asked to self-monitor.
   • Inform close contacts beyond household contacts (anyone you were less than 2m away from for
at least 15 min without PPE in the 48 hours before your symptoms began or your positive result
was confirmed) by providing them with the link to: Ontario.ca/exposed.

Scenario #9: I am an Excalibur varsity student-athlete and I have tested positive for COVID-19 or am
displaying symptoms consistent with COVID-19.

   • Contact Sarah Batley, Assistant Director of Sport, and Student Engagement, to discuss your next
steps. Trent Athletics will activate the team protocol.
   • Follow public health guidelines on isolation.

Scenario #11: I am a Canadian citizen who has travelled outside of Canada within the past 14 days.

   • Follow guidance of your local Public Health authority.
   • If exempt from federal quarantine requirements as directed by the border agent at your point of
entry, then continue to self-monitor for symptoms, and you may proceed to campus.
   • If you are not exempt from federal quarantine requirements, you must stay home for 14 days
immediately after your return to Canada.

Scenario #12: I am an international student who has travelled outside of Canada within the past 14
days.

   • Fully-vaccinated: you must obtain entry test and quarantine until you obtain a negative test
result. If test is positive, you must complete a 10-day quarantine.
   • Not fully-vaccinated: you are unable to enter Canada at this time due to government guidelines.
   • Contact Trent International international@trentu.ca to be connected with supports.

A Reminder
The measures implemented by the province, Public Health and by Trent are designed to reduce
both the risk of acquiring COVID-19 if you come into contact with someone who has it, and to
reduce the chance of you spreading it if you have it and are not aware. At all times, practice
good respiratory hygiene, wash your hands frequently, follow physical distancing measures,
wear a face mask, and use the provincial self-assessment app regularly (also accessible through
the Trent Mobile App). The University is also recommending that all students download the
federal COVID alert app. Consistently adhering to all of the requirements, protocols and
practices is your best defense against COVID-19.
