COMPETITION GUIDELINES The competition is open to 3 Categories: Student, Emerging & Established. Entries welcome from all disciplines including, but not limited to: Artists, Industrial Designers and Architects. Read eligibility requirements below and be sure to submit to the correct category. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA STUDENT ! Entrant must currently be enrolled in a post-secondary design or other artistically inclined program at time of submission. ! Individuals or teams are welcome to submit. TIMELINE, DEADLINES & FEES ! NO PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. ● Submissions must be received via the online entry system by 11:59PM PST ON JANUARY 31st 2019. There will be no extensions. ! Payments are accepted ONLINE BY CREDIT CARD ONLY. ENTRY FEES: STUDENT: $50 EMERGING: $100 ESTABLISHED: $150 STUDENT SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS DESIGNS ! Entry must be in concept form ONLY (sketches & renderings of proposed design). ! A prototype is not required. ! Design must not yet be manufactured. ! There are no limitations on proposed material type. ! Theme is open to broad interpretation. Concept Statements should reference the theme ‘Texture’, for example: ‘the texture of concrete…’ ! Entry deadline of January 31st 2019. ! Pendant, Wall, Table or Floor light designs are all eligible, with designs intended for indoor use. ! Proposed Entries are not to exceed 30 cubic feet at 1:1 scale. Failure to meet required scale will result in submission being rejected. ! Entry must be an original creation without infringing on any creative copyright. ! The submitted designs must not be, or contracted to be, mass-produced. (Mass produced shall be defined as: having been on the market for more than 1 year with sales exceeding 50 units of said light fixture.) ! Please ensure all info submitted is correct - including correct spelling and grammar as L A M P will use the info for all print material if selection is chosen as a finalist. ! L A M P will not accept requests for changes to the submitted info. IMAGES Failure to comply with image rules may result in the submission being removed from the competition. ! A maximum of 5 images in the following format must be submitted. ○ One image clearly illustrating the proposed scale of the design: situated next to a known object to demonstrate the intended size. ○ One image showing proposed detail of materials. ○ One file MAY be a video in MP4 or MOV format. ! Images must be JPGs 1200x1600 pixels (or1600x1200) at 300 dpi resolution and no larger than 8MB each. FAILURE to provide this resolution of image results in disqualification. ! Images must NOT have the submission name or logo of the designer, architect, firm, company, client or manufacturer anywhere on the image or file. ! DO NOT include any written content or text anywhere on the 5 images. Clean images showing the fixture only. No collages or layouts with multiple images. No branding. No logos. No names. No text of any kind. ! Renderings must be correctly labeled (see below). Remember - all submissions in ! All image files must be labelled EXACTLY as follows: (Failure to upload your images in this format will disqualify the entry.) TITLE_Category_NAME_Imagetype_Image# e.g.: MyLight_ST_Smith_RE_1 TITLE: refers to the submitted Title of the fixture. CATEGORY: Abbreviate as per: Student=ST, Emerging=EM, Established=ES. NAME: Designer Last Name or Company Name IMAGE TYPE: Abbreviate as per: Photograph=PH, Rendering=RE, Drawing=DR IMAGE FILE#: 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 ! The competition is completely blind to the judges, therefore the entrant’s name and/ or company name may not appear in this portion of the submission, failure to comply will result in submission being rejected. ! CONCEPT STATEMENT ! 150 words max. Include objectives and how they were met, design challenges, technological and/or material innovations, and social and environmental impact. ● Concept Statements must address the designer’s interpretation of the 2019 Theme: Texture. Failure to comply will result in submission being rejected. ! Entrant’s name and/ or company name may not appear in this portion of the submission, failure to comply will result in submission being rejected. PROJECT SPECS ! 75 words max. Include proposed dimensions, materials, fabrication techniques and manufacturing process. ! Entrant’s name and/ or company name may not appear in this portion of the submission, failure to comply will result in submission being rejected. PARTICIPANT BIOS ! 75 words max. This portion of the competition is the only time the entrant may use their name and/or company name. This section is BLIND to the Judges. ! If selected as a Finalist, this segment will be used on the L A M P website, in social media and in all exhibition print material. ! Ensure all info submitted is correct - including correct spelling and grammar as once the application has been submitted there will be NO CHANGES. (You can keep your submission open as a draft that you can update until final submission). JUDGING CRITERIA ! Aesthetics: Contemporary, visually stimulating, innovative, unique and marketable. ! Function: Simplicity and practicality of design’s intended use. ! Creativity: A unique approach to the material & concept. ! Social and Environmental Responsibility: Respectful use of materials. ! Creative Interpretation of Theme: Designer’s individual take on this year's theme "Texture" with reference made in the concept statement. TERMS AND CONDITIONS By participating in the L A M P 2019 Competition, the Designer agrees to the following: 1. All information and materials requested by L A M P must be provided in full. Failure to do so will result in disqualification without notice. 2. The application fee is non-refundable. No refunds will be issued under any circumstances. 3. Submissions will not be accepted to the competition if their presentation would infringe on a copyright. 4. L A M P may use the submitted images, creative content, the designer's name and likeness in relation to the L A M P competition for exhibition and any promotional materials. This pertains to use in print, on our website and on any websites affiliated with the L A M P competition for the current year and any subsequent years in perpetuity. The submission’s images may be reproduced in whole or in part for editorial and promotional purposes. 5. Wherever possible L A M P will strive to appropriately give credit to any promotionally reproduced images. 6. Entrants preserve ALL RIGHTS to his/her/their design/s. In the event that one of the participating fixtures directly receives a manufacturing deal as a result of participating in L A M P, a royalty would be applied as a part of the manufacturing contract, to be agreed upon by the entrant, L A M P and the manufacturer. 7. All design, material, submission & shipping costs, (including customs brokerage and import fees), incurred must be absorbed by the entrants. 8. Submissions must reflect the designs/photos submitted online to a 1:1 scale, unless otherwise requested or agreed upon by L A M P. All submissions must be functional indoor lights (except for Student Category which only submits concepts). BECOMING A FINALIST: 9. Upon notification, the top 10 chosen finalists in both Emerging and Established categories ONLY must ship their materials to LAMP as per designated shipping dates along with pre-paid return shipping labels and correct customs documentation. Applicants who fail to provide adequate pre-payment of shipping labels and customs documentation will not have their submissions returned. 10. Entrant agrees to either a) Install their lighting fixture themselves if necessary OR pay the installation fee (if necessary) of $200 CDN. 11. Entrant agrees to wire the submitted light with a 2 or 3 prong 120V North American power plug OR provide a 2 or 3 prong 120V North American power adapter that functions properly with the submission. 12. If the Finalist’s submission arrives at the exhibition space and is not functioning, the entrant agrees to pay a certified technician to get it working. 13. If selected as a finalist, entrant agrees to provide clear instructions on how to properly assemble and wire the fixture in english, with a visual diagram and a list of all pieces packaged 14. L A M P is in no way responsible for any damage to the qualifying submissions incurred during transport. 15. Any changes to the originally submitted content must be approved by L A M P at least four weeks prior to the September 2019 Opening Reception date. 16. The Designer agrees not to share classified information regarding participation in the exhibition until after the exhibition date, or until L A M P has deemed appropriate with written email consent. 17. If the Designer decides to have their submission material published in any public forum following the exhibition, the Designer agrees to try to include information regarding their participation in the L A M P competition & exhibition. 18. Participating Designers are not required to attend the Opening Reception, but we encourage any Designers who are able to attend to endeavour to do so. Each submission will receive one ticket to access the event. 19. Upon completion of submission entry & payment, the above shall act as a signed agreement between the Entrant and L A M P. BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN THE L A M P COMPETITION L A M P is a small organization that devotes itself to promoting and connecting emerging talents to new markets in lighting design. Our submission fees and sponsorships go directing into operating costs associated with the exhibition. This is an opportunity to showcase your work outside of the costly trade show environment yet within the support of this kind of community as we open the exhibition as an IDS Vancouver Offsite event. Costs often associated with exhibiting at a trade-show range in the thousands of dollars. Participation in L A M P as a finalist affords you the following benefits: ! A permanent online feature on the L A M P website for perpetuity. An annual advertising value worth hundreds of dollars. ! Your design being promoted through our newsletters and social media. ! Receiving high resolution photography from the event. ! The opportunity to be featured through our wide-reaching press releases that often lead to published interviews with high-profile online and print magazines. ! Winner in all three categories gets included in a feature on the Design Milk website and inclusion in a winners’ gallery Instagram post. ! Participation in the widely attended, unique and engaging L A M P Exhibition as well as potential to be invited to participate in other design fairs worldwide.
