Desert Weavers and Spinners present Michele Belson-Lunatic Fringe Color Theory Presentation: “Color and Theory from the Yarn Circle” March 23, 2020, after Guild meeting (approximately 10:30) Workshop: Tuesday - Wednesday, March 24-25, 2020, 9:30am - 4:30pm “One of the joys of weaving is how color interacts in the cloth. When weft yarns cross the warp it changes the apparent color of the warp, sometimes quite dramatically. This interaction is a result of the warp and weft alternating between being on top of the fabric and below it. This creates tiny dots and dashes of color that act like pixels on a computer screen, optically mixing in the viewers eye to create a new color. The resulting color can be either delightful, or…not” Enter the “color gamp” a tool for test-driving color combinations and a weaver’s best friend when planning beautiful, colorful, projects. A color gamp is a cloth that contains a set of color strips in the warp that are crossed by a set of color strips in the weft. Lunatic Fringe Yarns was born from a desire to weave a color gamp using a consistent set of yarns. A little while later, the biennial handweaving conference, Convergence, came along. Michele, as a young weaver, wanted to go to the weaving Mecca and made enough Tubular Spectrum™ Gamp kits to pay her way. The kits were a huge success, and Michele came home with enough orders to keep her busy dying yarn for a month. After that, she couldn’t keep up with demand, and because she lived in the southeast where textile production was happening, she found a dyehouse who would work with her and the color gamp business took off! Lunatic Fringe grew from 1-5 people and moved from Texas to Idaho. Michele now resides in southern California. All interested weavers should check out her website at lunaticfringeyarns.com. Presentation to Guild: Michele will make a presentation at the DWS March 23 meeting on “Color and Theory” with examples from her work.
Workshop Description: Michele will lead a workshop on color and theory for weavers. You will learn to weave color gamps with Lunatic Fringe yarn. She will describe the role of traditional color gamps, balance and ratio of colors and how structure effects color, as well as other components that effect color interactions. Students will also learn a bit of history of color theory. Maximum 12 students. When: Tuesday-Wednesday, March 24-25 Cost: Members $175 (includes material fee) Non-members $205 (includes material fee) Student level: Requires students to know how to warp a loom Where: TBD (somewhere in the Coachella Valley) Instructor to provide: Instructions and materials, including the REQUIRED Lunatic Fringe yarns, will be mailed to students one month prior to the workshop, along with the location! Students bring to class: A dressed Shaft Loom, 4 or 8 shafts with the appropriate reed (some warps will be 5/2 sett at 18 epi, some will be 10/2 sett at 24 epi and others will be 20/2 sett at 36 epi. In order to get as much done as we can, students should come with their loom warped with a small header woven and a single repeat of the treadling. Shuttles and as many bobbins as there are colors in your warp. Scissors, material for labeling your weaving on other people’s looms, small weights for repairs, a sense of humor and an open mind.
