permit the children to participate in more traditional games and activities, all while reducing their risk of contracting COVID-19. Unlike last year, all students will have lunch simultaneously in their respective classrooms for the first twenty minutes of the forty-minute breaks, followed by twenty minutes of recess. School Council We are always looking for new parents to join us at our School Council meetings. If you have any interest in attending, please contact the office. Most likely meetings will take place virtually this year. Once we know of your interest, we will be sure to share details on how and when these meetings will take place. COVID-19 Pre-Screening Prior to attending school, all students, staff and visitors must complete and follow the directions of the daily screening tool: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/ All individuals who are experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19 must not attend school and should follow the directions of the COVID-19 School Screening assessment tool. Allergies Please remember that Hillcrest is a NUT AWARE school. Students may not bring any nuts, peanut butter, or nut products (including Wow Butter) to school. Please make sure to read all labels before packing your child’s lunch. We have several children with severe anaphylactic allergies to a variety of nuts. Thanks for your cooperation. Phone Numbers and Email Addresses It is essential that we are made aware of any contact information changes in case there is an emergency at school. As phone numbers and email addresses may change over the course of the year, please remember to let Mme Blakey in the office know so that we can update our records. Changes to items such as child custody information should also be reported promptly to the school as well. Student Information Verification Pages are coming home on September 13th for every student. Everyone must sign and return these forms to the school by Friday, September 17th. Families will also receive a media consent form and a consent to receive electronic communication from the school when the Verification Pages are sent home. Both forms must be signed and returned. School Access During the School Day Traditionally, we know that parents and staff strive to reduce interruptions to instruction through the school day for students. The more we can reduce interruptions such as forgotten lunch deliveries, lost homework transfers, etc., the greater likelihood that students will have a productive academic Page 2 of 5
day. Not only will students likely learn more throughout the day, but also parents who are visiting the school and students who come in contact with visitors will have less exposure to people outside of their school cohorts/class and families. For this reason, under most circumstances, parents visiting the school to pick up their child, drop off items, will remain outside and instructions will be provided depending on the nature of the visit. Parents will not be permitted to access the school unless an appointment has been made. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding. Nutrition Program We are excited to announce that the Nutrition Program is returning to Hillcrest. The program will begin on Monday September 20th. Food items will be available in respective classrooms. We recognize that this is an essential program for students, and believe that this strategy will ensure that students receive the nutrition they need while also reducing comingling of different cohorts in the school by limiting food distribution to individual classrooms. If you are looking for ways to contribute to sustain this program this year, donations are always welcome and can be arranged through the office. Communication Communication between home and school is key to your child’s success. If you ever have concerns or questions, please speak directly to your child’s teacher(s). If any concerns remain, please contact school administrators as soon as possible. Do not think that you have to postpone concerns you have until Parent/Teacher interview time in November. Please contact us sooner rather than later. Please remember that meetings will be set up using technology to keep everyone safe this year as much as possible, with some exceptions. Safe Arrival and Dismissal As students arrive this year, they are required to enter the school at their designated entry doors. Information was sent to parents earlier this week addressing these individualized/personalized instructions. Please remind your child(ren) that there will be no supervision on the yard before school starts, but educators will be prepared to receive students in the school as they enter. This was a big change last year from our practice in the past. Students can’t come to the school prior to 8:40 a.m. as we will not be prepared to receive them. If driving a vehicle to drop off your child(ren), remember our parking lot is one way. Some roads by our school have been designated as School Safety Zones where speed limits are set at 30 km/h. Parents are asked not to block the bus pick up zone in the round driveway which is the bus loading zone and a fire lane. When picking up students, please park in the parking lot, turn off your vehicle, and take your keys. Also please remember that there are no school safety patrollers or municipal crossing guards. Also, please respect our neighbours by ensuring you are not blocking their driveways when waiting to pick up your child. Page 3 of 5
Parents should not enter the building at the end of the day to gather their child(ren). Thanks for your assistance! Inclement Weather While we are not expecting snow or ice this time of year, in the past, the arrival of fall often brings fog around. The policy of the LKDSB is: If a bus is cancelled in the morning due to snow, ice or freezing rain, it will be cancelled for the entire day and will NOT transport students home at the end of that day. If a bus is cancelled in the morning due to fog, it will operate at the end of the day to transport students home. We encourage parents of bus students to arrange their own transportation to school when it is safe to do so. Please listen to the radio for information if the weather looks questionable in the morning. École Publique Hillcrest Public School is in School Bus Zone 4. You can subscribe to receive push notifications on your smart phone by subscribing to *WEATHER CANCELLATIONS* in the MySBI mobile app. Generations Day Care Childcare Program Generations Day Care will continue running our Before and After-School Program at Hillcrest starting at 6:30 a.m. before school and ending at 5:30 p.m. after school. For more information about this service, or to apply, contact the Generations Day Care Hillcrest Site at: Phone (226) 932-1059 Email hillcrestgdc@gmail.com Terry Fox We hope to be participating in the Terry Fox Run/Walk at the school again this year. More information will be forthcoming electronically informing parents of how our school will be participating. Most likely classes will be participating in the event with their cohort, so the event will be smaller, and classes will not run simultaneously, but it will still be fun. The date for our Terry Fox day will be announced. Newsletter As was the case for the last two years, in looking for ways to reduce paper usage at the school, and to protect the environment, our newsletters will be posted to our website every month. We will communicate when it has been posted for your convenience. Paper copies will not be sent home monthly. Page 4 of 5
