SAC Sports Directory 2019 v5 March.qxp_Sports Directory 02/04/2019 14:13 Page 11 www.DofE.org The DofE aims to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development for young people aged 14 -24, which is of the highest quality and the widest reach. South Ayrshire is the leading Award provider in Scotland. The DofE Award programme is embedded in all our secondary schools and youth Clubs and is offered at Bronze, Silver and Gold level to all pupils. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in South Ayrshire has been growing rapidly over the last five years; we are now working with over 900 enrolled participants at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. In 2019 pupils have the opportunity to choose expedition where they can go sailing on the west coast of Scotland, Canoeing and cycling in the cairngorms or walking across Scotland’s abundant hills and forests? The year 2020 is the themed year of Coasts and Waters where we are planning a coast to coast expedition of walking, sailing, canoeing, cycling across Scotland. VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT To help these young people complete their full Award, we are looking to recruit people to support our expedition delivery. Last year alone we had over 500 young people on expedition and this figure is expected to grow in 2019/ 20. You don’t need any previous experience of leading expeditions, just a love of the outdoors and introducing young people to journeying through our beautiful coasts and countryside in South Ayrshire and cross Scotland. Training will be provided, based on your skills and experience and anyone who wants to get formal National Governing Body accreditation will be supported through that. PART –TIME PAID EMPLOYMENT - Full support in gaining National Governing Body Awards is offered, if you have the enthusiasm and commitment to progress into part-time paid employment with the DofE in South Ayrshire. For further information contact us at details below. Vincent McWhirter Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Manager Tel: 01292 319357 Email: vincent.mcwhirter@south-ayrshire.gov.uk 11

SAC Sports Directory 2019 v5 March.qxp_Sports Directory 02/04/2019 14:13 Page 14 The passport from grassroots to gold medals Ayrshire Sportsability was created to promote the education and welfare of people with physical, sensory or learning disabilities through sport. The Charity was set up in 2001 when it was discovered that children and young people with disabilities did not have the same opportunities as others to take part in physical activity and sport. Over 200 primary and secondary pupils took part in the first ‘Come and Try’ day. The popularity of our event has continued to grow every year with the 2019 event expecting to attract over 600 pupils. In 2014 we began working with adults with disabilities. In addition to our main event our programme for 2019 includes: • Continuation of our Grants Award programme to give financial support to talented individuals or Clubs, competing in Local or National Competitions. • An increased programme of ‘Come and Try’ and competitive events The Charity’s aims are: • To promote, co-ordinate and develop the participation of people with a disability in Ayrshire and Arran in sports and physical activities. • To develop sustainable sporting pathways towards excellence. • To raise the profile of sport for people with a disability in Ayrshire and Arran. • To organise sporting events, festivals and competitions to advance our aims. Members of the Charity include representatives from Ayrshire College, East Ayrshire Council, NHS Ayrshire and Arran, North Ayrshire Council, KA Leisure, Scottish Disability Sport, South Ayrshire Council and Sportscotland If you are interested in disability sport and would like to find out more about becoming a member please contact us. You can help to promote and support the Ayrshire Sportsability annual event and help us achieve our plans for the future by: • Providing sponsorship; • Fund raising events – individuals can plan their own fundraising projects. Let us know and we support your efforts; • Volunteering to help at our events and /or future club events; • Letting us know of any people with a disability who would like to be involved in our events; • Attending our Annual Charity Ball.
