SWHC INFORMATION SHEET 2018 Welcome to the 2018 hockey season! We, as the committee, are confident that it will be another phenomenal year for the Somerset West Hockey Club, and look forward to officially getting it underway in only a few weeks’ time. Before we do so, however, please read through this information sheet. It informs new members of all there is to know about our club, and communicates to old members all that will be new in 2018. Who we are The Somerset West Hockey Club has enjoyed success and produced quality players over the years, from junior to senior, social to national level. The club welcomes everyone; those looking to take their hockey further, those looking to just keep fit and enjoy the sport we all love, as well as all those in between. In 2017, we were proud to field six ladies’ and seven men’s teams, plus two U/13 teams. Mission statement Uphold the ethos of the Somerset West Hockey Club credo. Administer, develop, co-ordinate and promote hockey on a non-professional basis, no matter race, colour or culture. Enforce the rules of the Western Province Hockey Union. Provide opportunities for players to improve their performance levels. Promote sportsmanship, on and off the field. Club history In 1974, Jerry Garret had the vision to establish a new hockey club in the Helderberg basin. Together with Mervyn Traut, Terence (Terry) McIntyre and Albert Dunford a nucleus of 20 'bodies' was formed. 'Bodies' indeed, as many had not actually played hockey before. The first committee was elected: Mervyn Traut, Jerry Garrett, Mick Bourquin, Johan Strydom, Terry McIntyre and Dennis Johnson. The statue 'Physical Energy' by George Frederic Watts was chosen as the club logo as it was thought at the time to be the symbol of Cape Town, and also depicted the physical energy that the committee thought should be displayed by the club at all times. The first friendlies were played in 1974 with great success. In 1975 the club’s only team was admitted to the 4th league - in essence the 9th league due to the structure. The team walked the league with 78 goals for and 13 against them. Neels Van Niekerk was the first nomination and recipient of the Player of the Year award. In 1976, a second men’s team was entered into the 4th league; the first SWHC ladies took to the field in 1988. SWHC Copyright © All rights reserved.
Credo Winning is important. Players always give full effort and play up to the final whistle, regardless of the score. Opponents are always given a hard game; we always are tough and worthy opponents. Players are always enthusiastic, positive, and support and encourage each other. Team loyalty is considered very important. Winning is not everything. The club prides itself on its good behaviour, sportsmanship, self- discipline and courtesy toward opponents, officials and visitors. The ethos and code of conduct at the club are of such a nature that parents are happy to let their children become members. The club welcomes families; family involvement is important to the club. Membership application There will be no more hard-copy membership forms in 2018; membership applications are to be done online by following this link: https://goo.gl/forms/QrM0iln7fW72ENE52. Your membership application will only be seen as complete once you have confirmed that you have read the following club documents: 1. SWHC Information Sheet 2018 2. SWHC Terms and Conditions PLEASE NOTE: the membership application process needs to be undertaken in addition to the registration for trials, and only once your decision to become a member of the club in 2018 is final. Team composition and selection Team selection and composition for/of senior teams after trials After the first two rounds of trials, players will be selected by the coaches for either the A, B or C (men only) squad. Squad trainings will follow for a further three weeks, after which teams will be announced on 23 March at our inaugural SWHC Meat du Cap social event (see Facebook and website for details). 18 players will be selected per team (at least for the top sides, and then where possible). The top three teams will comprise no more than 5 scholars each, and no more than 3 scholars from the same school. In agreement with the club committee, a coach may use his/her discretion to deviate from these policies where seen fit. Weekly selection for senior teams 1. All club members are to communicate their weekly availability on their team’s WhatsApp group by no later than Monday evening. 2. All coaches will undertake their weekly team selections in accordance to WPHU League Rules and based on the following guidelines: A match will be played with no more than 16 players; the exact number of players is to each coach’s discretion. Coaches will consider paid-up club members first. Each player's overall practice attendance, as well as that of the previous week/s, and reason for absenteeism from practice will be considered next. Discipline issues will be considered afterward. Players with outstanding fees will only then be selected. Emergency players will be considered last. Emergency players are players who are contacted at the last minute to fill a vacant spot in a team; these players must complete the registration process before being allowed to represent the club. 3. The club captains will email the weekly team selections to all senior club members by no later than Thursday morning. Senior players joining after trials Based on previous achievements, players that join the club after trials have been completed will be accommodated in the team one lower than assumed suitable. Here, they will play for a trial period of 2 weeks; exceptions with regards to the trial period can be made when seen fit by both the committee and coach/es. SWHC Copyright © All rights reserved.

Interprovincial tournaments Many of our members represent the club at a provincial, or even national, level. The SWHC administrator and/or club captains will notify you of trial and tournament dates as soon as they are communicated to them by the Western Province Hockey Union. Indoor hockey In October 2017, the WPHU once again introduced a standard indoor league. Indoor is played in the summer months, i.e. first and fourth term. Please contact the respective club captains for further details. Umpiring Finding umpires is a weekly struggle. The committee/administrator is thus going to make a special effort this year to allocate umpires to each team on a weekly basis. If you are a graded umpire, and would like to make some extra cash (we pay well ) over the weekends, please inform the SWHC administrator. Also, if any of your outside friends are serious about umpiring, please ask them to send us their contact details. Those of you seeking a grading and/or umpire training are also to please get in touch with us. The same applies to those wishing to upgrade their grading. The club will gladly assist you in this regard. Junior hockey clinic In the past, our club was well known for its mini-hockey programme run for primary school learners every Friday afternoon. Many of our current senior players were, in fact, introduced to our club through this very programme. In 2016, the club got the initiative rolling again, and in 2017 it was an absolute success. Such a project cannot be run by the SWHC administrator and committee alone, however; it requires the support of its club members. Should you be interested in having a special role in this project, please let us know. All club members will be requested to assist at some stage or another. This year, numerous clinics will be run, with details to follow shortly. SWHC Copyright © All rights reserved.
