Member Development Programmes Surf Lifeguard Award Exam Procedures 17/18 Chief Examiner: Kate Suter SLGA. k8suter@gmail.com The following procedures have been adopted for surf lifeguard award exams in the Christchurch area for the 17/18 season. This document seeks to outline and clarify all the responsibilities of the clubs when presenting candidates for examination. Prerequisites Candidates prior to sitting the exam are to have completed in a pool: A 400m swim under 9:00:00 A tube rescue Releases and tows as per the surf lifeguard award manual These prerequisites must be witnessed and signed off by an examiner with the correct paperwork. It is the responsibility of the club instructor to contact an examiner to arrange this. Host club The host club is expected to provide an IRB plus a qualified operator and qualified crewperson for the water component of the exam as a safety boat. The examiner in charge will liaise with the club to ensure that this occurs. Instructor or club representative Clubs are expected to provide an instructor or club representative to represent their candidates at the exam at a ratio of 1 instructor or club representative to 5 candidates. All instructors and club representative are required to be a currently refreshed surf lifeguard, as they will be assisting with running the exam and providing in water safety during the practical testing. If there is not an instructor or club representative present to the correct ratio then all of the respective club’s candidates may not be examined at that exam. Exam registration and paperwork All candidates are required to be registered via email with Sam Clutterbuck, Life Saving Manager, sam.clutterbuck@surflifesaving.org.nz at least 5 days prior to the start of the exam. Also the names of the instructor or club representative also need to be provided by this time. On the exam day the club instructor or representative will need to supply a completed instruction record and workbooks for all candidates before the exam begins. Failure to do this may result in the respective club’s candidates not being examined. During the exam The examiner in charge will direct the club instructor or representative how they would like them to participate in the exam. This will range from directing candidates to different stations to providing support for their candidates. At the completion of the exam the examiner in charge will debrief all the club instructors or representatives as to the competency of their candidates to provide feedback for the training of future candidates. All Candidates must wear a high viz vest for the Run/swim/Run and the tube rescue. Candidates that do not have a vest risk the chance of not being able to complete the exam.
Please contact Sam or Kate Suter k8suter@gmail.com with all questions relating to SLGA examinations. There are four scheduled throughout the season. Candidates must complete the 400m swim prior to attending the theory exam and present, evidence of such. Clubs are required to send Instructors along with their candidates. This will be strictly enforced. Clubs do not get the option of choosing the examiner for the exam. The dates are as follows: 12th November, 2017 3rd December, 2017 21st January, 2018 18th February, 2018 (last one before Sand Nationals) The venue for the exam will be based on the ratio of candidates per club, and will be confirmed and notified to instructors in the week preceding. Please note, that other exams can be arranged by contacting either Sam or Kate who will endeavour to arrange as applicable.
BP IRB Drivers and Crew Examination Procedures for 2017/18 Chief Examiner: Scotty Roberts IRB thescottdog66@gmail.com The following procedures have been adopted for IRB Crew and Driver award exams in the Christchurch area for the 17/18 season. This document seeks to outline and clarify all the responsibilities of the clubs when presenting candidates for examination. Prerequisites Candidates prior to sitting the exam are to have completed: A minimum of ten hours driver training for both crew and drivers All people wishing to sit the drivers exam , must have their VHF certificate prior to the exam These prerequisites must be verified and signed off by an examiner with the correct paperwork. It is the responsibility of the club instructor to contact an examiner to arrange this. If they do not have the prerequisites they will not be able to sit the exam. Host club The host club is expected to provide an IRB plus a qualified operator and qualified crewperson for the water component of the exam as a safety boat. Exam Dates Exams will be run on request from clubs and will be based around swell conditions. The Practical Test component of the Exam shall be performed in a minimum of 1 metre of surf. The surf size will be measured from the front of the wave, from the trough of the wave to the top, during the period of request. (This is for all drivers exams, crew exams can occur in any size swell). The exam may be split into, theory, re instatement, and the practical surf component, and this will be communicated to the instructor when requesting the exam. Helmets, PFD’S and High Viz Vests All operators/drivers and crewpersons must each wear a helmet that meets NZ Standard 5823:1989 when operating an IRB at all times. (Reference Policy SLS031_ Helmet use in Powered Craft and Lifeguarding around Rocks). The patient for the mock rescue must also be in a high viz vest Failure to have helmets, along with PFD’s and high viz vests may result the exam not proceeding Please note, that other exams can be arranged by contacting either Sam or Scotty will endeavour to arrange as applicable.
VHF Radio Operators Course Will be scheduled and run on a needs basis. Regional Patrol Teams Competition Saturday 14th April, 2018 Venue TBA The Regional Patrol Competion is based on teams of 4, completing various tasks that are assigned points values in a Rogaine style format. This competition is designed to test club members’ lifeguarding and rescue skills. IRB Maintenance Workshop SLSNZ Power Craft Officer Dave Hickey will provide instruction on how to maintain club engines and hulls. This is a free service to all clubs and is a great way to upskill members on the workings of our motors. Clubs need to register their interest for this. Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 Nov, Owles Terrace Rookie Lifeguard Programme Club Coordinators will be contacted before this to nominate their cadets for the programme. Clubs will provide mentors for their cadets who will be put through a 15 week programme of training and patrolling. Surf Life Saving will provide work books, and uniforms can be purchased or clubs can source their own if they wish. A rookie Lifeguard competion will also be held for the guards on Sunday 11 th March, 2018 at Waimairi SLSC
Surf Sports Events Programme Preseason Series Surf Ski, Surf Boat, Board and Surf Canoe series in Lyttelton Harbour over the October - November. This will be a great way to kick off your season with some long hard racing ready to hit the summer. District Interclub Competitions and Training Sessions Training/Inter club #1, Taylors Mistake, 9th December 2017 High Tide: 10.08am Events to be contested: Swim, Board, Ski, and Ironman x 3, Flags, Sprints Training/Racing for Large Craft #1, North Beach, 10th December, 2017 IRB, Canoes and Surf Boats IRB: Singles, Assembly, Teams Canoe and Boat: Short Course long Course Training/Interclub #2 Inc. Large Craft, New Brighton, 13th January, 2018 Low Tide: 9.00am Events to be contested: Swim, Board, Ski, and Ironman x 3, Flags, Sprints IRB: Singles, Assembly, Teams Canoe and Boat: Short Course long Course Points to Note: Dress Standards: As per SLSNZ Competition Manual. Note that the local Sports Committee has approved the wearing of wetsuits for all carnivals before Christmas. After this, the decision will be made by the Event Controller after consultation with clubs and officials. Club Safety Boats & Crews. The Local Sports Committee wish to emphasis the following: Clubs need to ensure that the crews has sufficient experience to cope with the conditions on the day The Crew needs to be ready to go 30min prior to the start of the event All crews will be given support and guidance throughout the event Clubs need to advise SLSLNZ the crew no later than Thursday prior to the event Qualified Cadets can compete in Cadet Races at the Interclubs. Otherwise they must compete in the Junior Surf Carnivals.
Junior Surf Events Programme All events start at 9.00am with an aim to finish by 11.30am, Event #1: Waimairi 3rd Dec, 2017 Low Tide: 9.50am High Tide: 4.49pm Events contested: Sprints/Relays Surf Race/RWR Board Race Diamond Event #2: Waikuku 14th Jan, 2018 Low Tide: 9.48am High Tide 3.51pm Events Contested: Beach Flags Board Relay Run Swim Run/ RWR 2 person Taplin (Swim/Board) Notes Events—details will be emailed to Junior Surf Coordinators before each event. . Age Groups—as per SLSNZ rules, the minimum age for competing is 7 years. For the purpose of determining an age group, all competitors will have a common birth date calculated as at midnight on 30 September, and the age at that date in the season shall determine their age for events that season. Note that a member may compete when they turn 7 years old during the season.

Oceans Twilight Races (10-13 year olds) These races are aimed at junior athletes looking to compete at the Oceans event being held for the 2017/18 season at Owrea beach on the North Shore of Auckland Twilights will be run on Tuesday night, by Sumner SLSC at Sumner beach or Scarborough dependant on conditions. All athletes to meet at Sumner SLSC. The first twilight will be on a Thursday due to Waitangi weekend Start time 6.30pm, with registrations from 6.00pm. Dates are as follows: Thursday 8th February, 2018 Tuesday 13th Feb, 2018 Tuesday 20th Feb, 2018 Events contested will be: Swim, Board, and Diamond. The number of races will be determined on the night by entrants and conditions
K Day Sunday 11th February, 2018, Taylors Mistake SLSC Low Tide: 8.28am Start: 9am Teams: Maximum 6 Person teams, Teams can consist of any number of male and females. Clubs are encouraged to enter as many teams as possible. There is one grade — Open. Team members must have their Surf Lifeguard Award Teams of less than 6 can be entered (forfeit races with 6 people). Teams can forfeit any event they don’t want to do or cannot field a team / member. Events: 1. Black and White RELAY (4 person swim relay)*double points for the Giants eye trophy. 2. Six person beach relay heats (90m traditional relay) 3. Beach relay Final 4. Tube & Board rescue relay heats and Final (minimum 1 female can do any of the 4 placements) 5. Masters – Ski Race 6. Women’s Ski heats and Final (teams can enter as many people as they like) 7. Men’s Ski Straight heats and Final (teams can enter as many people as they like) 8. Masters – Board Race 9. Women’s Board RELAY Straight Final – two people (teams can enter more than 1 team) 10. Men’s Board RELAY Straight Final – two people (teams can enter more than 1 team) 11. Beach flags – female (one person per team) 12. Beach flags – male (one person per team) 13. Masters – Surf Race 14. Diamond Lady M Course. 15. Ironman M Course. 16. Kesteven Cup Ironman Relay Straight FINAL – five legs (in order) – 400m run, swim leg, board, ski, sprint finish *double points* Trophies Black & White Trophy – 4 person swim relay. Will be retained as a stand-alone event. Any team of four can enter (all from the same club) Points contribute towards the Giants Eye Trophy (points are doubled for this event) but not the Oliver Turpin Trophy. Kesteven Cup – Ironman Relay. Will be retained in the format that it has evolved into – 5 leg relay event. This will be the last event of the day and part of the main competition. Oliver Turpin Trophy – will be awarded to the top 6 person team. Giants Eye Trophy – will be awarded to the overall top club (accumulated club points from all teams) Event Conditions Points will be awarded for the top eight places – 8 points for 1st down to one point for 8th. The number of teams that go through to the final from each heat will be dictated by the number of heats required e.g. If four heats are required then two teams will go through from each heat. Note there is a maximum of 16 competitors in the ski, board (each leg) and ironman. The team with the most points will win the Oliver Turpin Trophy.
Notes All teams and team members must be registered at the Manager’s Meeting. Each team must be clearly identified with club caps and markings i.e. A, B or C if a club has more than one team. Also if teams enter relay events with more than 1 entry then this must be declared and a number given to each entry. Any age/grade except for cadets i.e. there is only one grade – Open. Clubs are encouraged to enter as many teams as they like. For the purpose of drawing for heats, it will be assumed that the club’s “A” team is their best team. This is to try and avoid a clash of top teams in the heats. Each club is required to submit the number of teams they will have competing at 9 am at the managers meeting. There will be no substituting of team members once the teams have been declared at the Manager’s Meeting. The only way a person can be replaced in a team during the event is through injury. This must be approved by the Event Manager, and they can only be replaced by a person not currently in a team. Masters races – These will be mixed races (so one race) with a handicap format. The oldest competitor goes on go and then 10 sec intervals for every decade to the youngest. E.g. 70-80 on Go, 60-70 on 10sec, 50-60 on 20sec, 40-50 on 30 sec and 30-40 on 40 sec. In the interest of political correctness and gender equality the Women will leave the same time as the men.
