                                         BOARD MEETING
                             TUESDAY, March 1, 10 a.m., by Zoom

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Ephesians 2:10 from the New International Version “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ
Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” A talent is something you are
born with that gives you a unique skill and/or ability. It is not necessarily a learned behavior but it can
be strengthened with practice. We can share it with others and use them to glorify Jesus Christ and to
experience the fullness of life. So how do we use our many talents in UMW?
Our focus for the March General meeting will be using our hands-on talents for the
hands-on mission projects at our monthly meeting. We will be filling Easter eggs for
the church’s egg hunt event, making birthing kits, sewing book bags for the Midwest
Distribution Center, knitting squares for blankets for the Afghan refugees, and
preparing greeting cards for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and cards for our own shut-
ins. These projects and others focus on three areas of mission work: local, national and
international, that we try to support each year.
We use the talents that God has helped us to nurture over the years. We each have talents and
interests which God has bestowed upon us and it is then up to us to take those talents, hone them, and
share them with others whether it is teaching someone else the skill or sharing the products that come
from the talent.
One of my talents is knitting prayer shawls, hats and scarves. I learned to knit when I was about 6 or
7 years old. I had watched my mother sew and knit which were her talents, and when I showed an
interest, she shared her talents with me. I admit I don’t do either skill as well as my mother did, but I get
a lot of pleasure from knitting. I enjoy seeing the outcome and knowing that someone else will benefit
from what I made. I feel fulfilled.
My wish for each of you is that you find a talent, nurture it and then enjoy the fruits of your labors
and feel fulfilled.
                                                       Connie Crihfield, President

TREASURER’S REPORT
COTS UMW is going strong - meeting monthly in person or by Zoom, depending on
the weather and on Covid 19 and its variants.
Income for the month of January was $915 - a result of online sales of collectables
from the last Flea Market, thanks to the efforts of Victoria Ashley.
    In January, UMW spent $1050:
Ohio Guidestone (formerly Berea Children’s Home), one of our primary benevolences, was
given $900. $50 was given to Community of Hope for the January’s general meeting program
about aging out of foster care. And $100 went to staff as Christmas gratuities.
After setting aside $1200 for our president (or a substitute) to attend UMW's quadrennial national
Assembly from May 20 to 22 in Orlando, our operating balance came to $6925.40.
We anticipate another Flea market in May which will add to our current balance, thus enabling us to
make additional donations to our favorite charities.
Thank you all for your pledges and support of COTS UMW. Remember that all are welcome to
attend our free General Meetings on the second Tuesday of each month (Flea-Market months and
summer excluded). At our April general meeting, we will take up a Prayer and Self Denial offering to
benefit deaconesses and women missioners.
                                                      Arleen Twist, Treasurer

PRAYER AND SELF DENIAL
This year the theme is: Love, Justice and Service: Answering the Call.
We are honoring deaconesses and home missioners who have said yes to the
call God has placed on their lives. For over 150 years, United Methodist Women
members have worked hard to turn faith, hope and love into action on behalf of
women, children and youth in every corner of the world.
In 2020 there was 100% conference participation in this observance and raised
$434,844. 100% of this offering goes directly to fund the work it is designated that
year.
We will be collecting this special offering at the April meeting.

SOCIAL ACTION
Courtney Astolfi, “Lead safe Cleveland Coalition: City, Cleveland Clinic help crush fundraising goal,”
Plain Dealer, January 14, 2022, pA8.
The Lead Safe Cleveland Coalition has surpassed its $99.4 million goal with $115 million pledged
or donated funds.
The Cleveland Clinic announced a $50 million donation on January 12 in addition to a $2 million
donation in December of 2021. The City of Cleveland will provide $17 million pending city council
approval from the federal allotment of the American Rescue Plan Act.
The US Department of HUD announced an award of $2 million to Cleveland on January 12 to
reduce lead hazards in homes. In December 2021, HUD granted $5 million for clean- up of lead paint in
240 Cleveland homes.
The Mayor of Cleveland, Justin Bibb, stated these funds are investing in the well-being of persons
living in Cleveland. This money will allow grants for property owners to pay for lead safe
improvements, train persons to inspect homes for the certification process, and fund education about
lead remediation. He plans to appoint a “lead czar” to coordinate the efforts.

Michael Marcus, “Commentary: Payday lending reforms are working for Ohio consumers.”
Plain Dealer, January 28, 2022, pE2.
The Ohio Fairness in Lending Act passed three years ago. Since that time, the Hebrew Free Loan
Association of Northeast Ohio reported that the reforms have resulted in fewer persons in crisis needing
loan help. Before the act, a $400 loan from payday lenders could have as much as $600 in fees. Now
fees are limited to $112 for a $400 loan. The law is considered a model for the country.
