44th All Ontario Chiefs Conference June 26-28, 2018 Nipissing First Nation Hosted by Anishinabek Nation Host Treaty area Robinson Huron Treaty
Our Peoples have lived and traded in this area for at least 10,000 years. Nipissing was the centre of a key trade route that stretched as far north as James Bay. Today, Lake Nipissing and the rivers that feed into it are very much the heart and soul -- the sense of place and belonging -- that has been passed down through the generations: “The Land, The People, The Future.” Ontario It has been a very busy time since last Regional Chief year’s AOCC at Lac Seul First Nation. Aanin Boozhoo kina weya, On behalf of the Leadership Council and the Debendaagziwaad of the Nbiising Anishnaabeg, I would like to welcome Elders, Youth, Leadership and delegates to the traditional territory of Nipissing First Nation for the 44th All Ontario Chiefs Conference. The Nipissing (or Nbisiing) people have lived in the area of Lake Nipissing since time immemorial. Our name Nbisiing or “little water” was likely a Chief comparison to the larger Great Lakes Scott McLeod to the west and south. Historically, the Nipissings were traders due to Lake Nipissing’s ideal Nipissing First Nation central location at the junction of the trade routes. Today, Nipissing First Nation is a progressive, culturally strong and self-governing Nation with a diverse economy. We remain proud stewards of our lands and waters, and hope you enjoy exploring the beautiful surroundings during your stay with us. Bi-biingeyok maa Nbisiing / Welcome to Nipissing First Nation Gimaa Scott McLeod
It is my distinct pleasure to extend warm greetings to all taking part in the 44th Annual All Ontario Chiefs Conference.
