The Soviet T-34 Tank as Beutepanzer and Panzerattrappe
in German Wehrmacht Service 1941-45
Beutepanzers, captured foreign tank designs in service with the Wehrmacht, played a much more influential role
in German Panzer deployment and tactics than previously thought. While the bulk of Beute tanks were relegated
to hinterland policing and anti-partisan duties, it was the hundreds of Soviet-built T-34s in German hands that
were supporting Panzers in the medium tank and tank destroyer roles in combat everywhere along the frontlines
in the East.
For the first time, this book sheds comprehensive light on the German Panzerkampfwagen T 34 – 747 (r), and
underlines this detailed research with hundreds of photographs of the German T 34 in action. Unlike other
publications so far released on the topic of Beutepanzers, this monograph focuses on the hardware rather than
on the organisational paperwork of unit designations, readiness reports and unit deployment histories. It is
consequently highly pictorial, showing tanks in service, their Soviet technology and production batches, as well
as their German modifications and markings and it looks at the life of their crews. Furthermore, it outlines the
T-34’s development in the Soviet Union based on the most recent discoveries. As it is crucial to understanding the
astonishing extent to which the T 34 was used in German service, and what an immense and important impact it
had, the background of the German Beute principle is highlighted in an extended introduction.
Another major chapter in this book is devoted to T 34 Panzerattrappen dummy tanks that, to a hitherto unknown
degree, were most influential in tactical anti-tank training and tactical doctrine for the Wehrmacht. The extent to
which these T 34 dummies were used strongly underscores the thundering impact this Soviet medium tank had
on the German side. The Panzerattrappen require a similarly extensive introduction in this book. Dating back to
Kaiser and Reichswehr days, it allows readers to fully understand why ‘wooden T 34s’ played such a decisive role
in German land warfare training.

The Kübelwagen is a legend. While there have been several publications
covering this vehicle over the decades, this present book is different as it offers
a fresh look and a unique approach: For the first time, a large amount of
high-quality wartime photographs were available for the detailed research of
production batches and individual components. This has allowed the first-ever,

displayed are mostly unpublished and come from private photo albums of

British Military Trucks
in Wehrmacht Service
Vehicles captured around Dunkirk, in France, Belgium, Greece and
North Africa - Service on the Eastern Front, in the West, South and with
the Afrikakorps
Captured Beutefahrzeuge of British manufacture were a significant addition to
Germany’s military efforts in the later war years. Without these trucks, many stemming
from the Battle of Dunkirk, the German war machine would have been much less
capable of waging Blitzkrieg against the Soviet Union from 1941.
While Operation Dynamo, the evacuation from Dunkirk in May and June 1940, made
possible the escape of more than 300,000 French and British soldiers, they had to leave
all their heavy equipment behind. All in all, the BEF lost around 65,000 vehicles, many
of which returned to military service on the German side and doing their duty on the
Eastern Front. Other sources for the German Wehrmacht to lay its hands on British
trucks to supplement its own forces were Operation Demon in April 1941, the British
evacuation from Greece, and the campaign in North Africa from February 1941 to June
1943.
This publication offers for the very first time a comprehensive overview on the various
British Trucks in Wehrmacht Service, covering well-known models and makes such as
the Bedford and the Morris-Commercial GS trucks in the 8cwt to 3-ton range, the heavy
Scammell Pioneers and AEC Matadors, specialised vehicles such as cranes and field
cars as well as many rarer makes, rarities and oddities.
A special chapter also grants an overview on the Canadian-built vehicles of the British
Army that served with the Afrikakorps.
For all British military vehicle enthusiasts this book is a milestones.

German Panzers and Allied Armour in Yugoslavia

When the Yugoslavia theatre of operations in 1941-45 is mentioned, the first description
that comes to mind is Bandenkampf (anti-Partisan warfare). And truly, more than any other
theatre, fighting in the Balkans was among the most irregular and bloody of the whole of
World War Two. This publication aims to close a vital gap in documentation of this campaign
by providing the first comprehensive account of armoured vehicles and their respective units
deployed there.
Combat in Yugoslavia also meant an exceptionally large number of combatants were involved.
There was the German Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS, German Police, Italian Army, Soviet Army,
British Army and, last but not least, various local ethnic groups fighting on one side or the
other. All these were equipped with the most amazing and astonishing assembly of armoured
vehicles of any theatre of operations in World War Two. Vehicles ranged from early German
Panzers, German Beutepanzers captured in previous campaigns in France and Russia,
uniquely outdated Italian tanks and tankettes, to the most modern Soviet and American

was in a very poor state of repair, and a lot was only fit for scrapping.

The development and use of military trucks in the post-war period

was therefore dominated by the feverish search for the ideal military
vehicle.
Moves had been made between the War Office and British
manufacturers to produce a family of standard types to avoid the British Military
logistical nightmare that had occurred during the war with so many Trucks

The Soviet ‘Giant of the Eastern Front’ – Development, Production Batches and
Combat
Nach Mitternacht am 22. Juni 1941 wurden die sowjetische 34. Panzerdivision,
disloziert in Gorodok südwestlich von Lemberg in der Ukraine, und die anderen
Einheiten des 8. Mechanisierten Korps in Alarmbereitschaft versetzt. Die gesamte
schwere Brigade mit ihrem 67. und 68. Panzerregiment und weitere Einheiten
auf Korpsebene machten sich auf in den Großen Vaterländischen Krieg, ihrem
Schicksal entgegen. Zwischen dem 24. Juni und 9. Juli 1941 gingen dabei alle (!)
T-35 der beiden Regimenter binnen nur etwas mehr als zwei Wochen verloren.
Trotz seines geringen Gefechtswertes im Jahre 1941 hatte der Mehrturmpanzer
T-35 in den 1930er Jahren seinen Auftrag, auf Paraden die eigene Bevölkerung von
den Fähigkeiten der Sowjetunion unter Josef Stalin zu überzeugen, voll und ganz
erfüllt. Gleichzeitig gelang es ihm, durch seine schiere Größe und beeindruckende
Bewaffnung, auch westlichen Militärs die Macht des “roten” Panzerbaus zu
verdeutlichen.
Vorliegende Publikation zeigt mit weitgehend bisher unpublizierten Fotos erstmals
umfassend die Geschichte, Technik, Baulose und den schicksalhaften Kampfeinsatz
der sowjetischen “Kolosse der Ostfront” in einer westlichen Publikation auf.
Zusätzlich wird erstmals auch die Nutzung des T-35 in der Wehrmacht
dokumentiert.
After midnight on 22 June 1941, the Soviet 34th Tank Division of 8th Mechanised
Corps was put on alert. The T-35 tanks were readied to move and bombed up on the
training ground of the unit’s home base at Gorodok, southwest of the city of Lvov in
the Ukraine. The whole heavy brigade with its 67th and 68th Tank Regiments and
other corps-level units faced their fate in the Great Patriotic War. The T-35s headed
towards the enemy and the two regiments lost all (!) of them between 24 June and 09
July, in barely two weeks.
Despite its limited value in combat in 1941 the multi-turreted T-35 had perfectly

80 pages - Illustrated with 177 black&white photographs, the Eastern Front’, their development, technology, production batches and the fateful
2 colour photos, 20 graphics and two 1/35 scale drawings - combat history, illustrated mostly with hitherto unpublished photographs and many
English Text graphics.
Additionally the use of the T-35 in the German Wehrmacht is documented.

Die “Fulda Gap“ („Lücke bei Fulda“) an der innerdeutschen Grenze zählte während des Kalten Krieges zu den heißesten Punkten an der Nahtstelle,
wo sich die Militärbündnisse NATO und Warschauer Pakt gegenüberstanden. Im Kriegsfall wäre der osthessische Raum das potentielle Einfallstor der
Warschauer-Pakt-Truppen in die Metropolregion Richtung Frankfurt/Main und das Rhein-Main-Gebiet gewesen. Für die Einnahme der Bundesrepublik
Deutschland war eine Zeitspanne von nur fünf bis sieben Tagen angesetzt und innerhalb fünfzehn Tagen wollten die Warschauer-Pakt-Truppen an der
französischen Küste stehen, um hier ein Anlanden von amerikanischen und britischen Hauptkräften vom Seeweg her zu verhindern.
In vorliegender Publikation wird die geplante Verteidigung des Fulda Gap durch die Verbände der US Army und deren Fahrzeuge anhand der Übungen
Caravan I 1972, REFORGER 81 Certain Encounter und REFORGER 83 Confident Enterprise mit zahlreichen bisher unveröffentlichten Fotos in Wort
und Bild dargestellt.
During the Cold War, the Fulda Gap, at the inner-German border, was one of the hottest points of potential contact between the military alliances of
NATO and the Warsaw Pact. If it had actually come to a war, the East Hessian region would have become the gateway for Warsaw Pact troops to enter the
metropolitan region of Frankfurt. Overrunning West Germany was scheduled to take only five to seven days, and within fifteen days the Warsaw Pact wanted
to be on the French coast to prevent American and British main forces from landing there by sea.
This publication shows the planned defence of the Fulda Gap by the US Army exemplary with the exercises Caravan I 1972, REFORGER 81 Certain
Encounter and REFORGER 83 Confident Enterprise. This is illustrated with a large number of hitherto unpublished photographs of the US vehicles that were
ready for the defence against the aggressor from the east.

Aufgrund von Feuerkraft, Beweglichkeit, Stoßkraft, Schutz, Durchsetzungsvermögen und
Führungsfähigkeit eignet sich die Panzertruppe besonders zum entscheidungssuchenden Gefecht.
Durch ihre Gliederung und Ausrüstung ist sie befähigt, weiträume Angriffe oder schnelle und
wuchtige Angriffe mit kurz gestecktem Ziel zu führen. Darüber hinaus dient sie der Durchführung
und Unterstützung von Maßnahmen zur Landes- und Bündnisverteidigung sowie zur internationalen
Konfliktverhütung und Krisenbewältigung. Die Hauptaufgabe der Kampfpanzer der Panzertruppe
ist der Kampf gegen feindliche Panzerverbände im offenen Gelände.
Heute, wie schon zu den Anfängen der Bundeswehr, ist die Panzertruppe das Rückgrat der

Due to its firepower, mobility, thrust, protection, assertiveness and command capability, the Panzertruppe
(German Armour Corps) is particularly well suited for decisive combat. Its structure and equipment
enables it to conduct long-range attacks, or fast and powerful attacks with a closer target. In addition,
the Panzertruppe serves to conduct and support national and alliance defence measures, as well as
international conflict prevention and crisis management. The main task of main battle tanks of the
Panzertruppe is to fight against enemy tank formations in open terrain.

Für die Bundeswehr ergab sich Ende der 1950er Jahre der Zwang, die
Kampfpanzer M 47/M 48 amerikanischer Bauart baldmöglichst durch einen
neuen Typ abzulösen. Sie entsprachen in vieler Hinsicht nicht den deutschen
taktischen Vorstellungen und Erfordernissen für den mitteleuropäischen
Einsatzraum. So fing die Bundesrepublik Deutschland wieder bei Null im
Panzerbau an. Der Führungsstab des Heeres hatte bereits im November 1956 seine
Anforderungen an den ersten deutschen „Kampfpanzer Standard“ nach dem 2.
Weltkrieg formuliert. Am 9. September 1965 war es dann soweit, dass man den
ersten serienmäßig im Nachkriegs-Deutschland produzierten und nun „Leopard“
genannten Kampfpanzer an die Panzertruppe übergeben konnte.
Vorliegende Publikation zeichnet in eindrucksvollen Fotos den Einsatz des
Leopard 1 der Bundeswehr auf NATO-Manövern im Kalten Krieg nach, darunter

At the end of the 1950s, the German Bundeswehr decided to replace its M 47 / M 48
tanks of American origin as soon as possible with a new main battle tank built in
West Germany. In many respects, the American designs did no longer correspond
with German tactical ideas and operational requirements for the Central European
theatre of operations. Thus, starting from scratch again, West Germany began new
tank construction. As early as November 1956, the army’s joint staff had already
formulated its requirements for the first German tank design, “Kampfpanzer
Standard” or standardised concept tank, since World War Two. Finally, on 09
September 1965, the first German post-war tank design, the series-produced and aptly
named Leopard main battle tank was handed over to the Panzertruppe.

Vehicles on the Legendary Soltau-Lüneburg Training Area of the
British Army of the Rhine
Am 1. Juli 1963 trat das Soltau-Lüneburg Abkommen rechtsgültig in Kraft, in dem
zwischen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Kanada sowie dem Vereinigten Königreich
von Großbritannien und Nordirland die Nutzung eines Truppenübungsplatzes, dem
Soltau-Lüneburg Training Area (SLTA), ausgehandelt worden war. Mehr als 30 Jahre
später fand die letzte britische Übung auf dem Gebiet der SLTA im Mai 1994 statt. Am
8. Juni 1994 wurde der Union Jack vor dem Stabsgebäude auf dem Gelände des Camps
Reinsehlen für immer eingeholt.
Vorliegende Publikation erlaubt erstmalig, das einzigartige Übungsareal der SLTA
und im Speziellen die dort eingesetzten britischen Fahrzeuge (vom Landy bis zum
Rhino) aus dem Kalten Krieg näher zu betrachten und stellt somit eine Zeitreise in die
Geschichte der BAOR (British Army of the Rhine - Britische Rheinarmee) dar.
On 01 July 1963 the Soltau-Lüneburg Agreement between West Germany, Canada and the
UK on the use of German land for exercises came into force. The Soltau-Lüneburg Training
Area (SLTA) was born. More than 30 years later the last exercise in the area of the SLTA
was conducted in May 1994. On 08 June 1994, the Union Jack was taken down for good in
front of the headquarters on the grounds of Camp Reinsehlen.
