VOLUME 05: 19 FEBRUARY 2021 CAPTAIN ANGUS AND HER ALIEN FRIEND! This week the Grade 2s had an out of this world experience! Captain Angus and her alien friend, G252, visited the Grade 2 class! Together they took the Grade 2s on a Space adventure. This was a creative writing process to inspire and motivate our special Earthlings to use their imaginations and write their own ‘Rocket Adventure into Space’ stories. The process began with a brainstorming session, which then lead into a magical creative writing piece. They also studied the solar system and made their own Space mobiles.
GRADE 4: PARAGRAPH PLANNING In Grade 4, the children have been learning about the structure of a paragraph and how to plan and write a good paragraph. This week we worked in pairs to write a good paragraph about Somerset House. After our paired writing activity, we shared our ideas with the class and came up with a good topic sentence, three supporting sentences and a concluding sentence. We are learning that structure, planning and purpose all need to be considered when writing. Here are a few examples of our paragraphs: • Somerset House is a friendly, independent prep school in Somerset West. The school was founded in 1948 and turns 73 years old this year. CLASSIFICATION OF LIVING ORGANISMS This week the Grade 7s have learnt about classification of living organisms. We have looked at the animal Kingdom and learnt about two Phyla – Vertebrates and Invertebrates. We have also learnt about the distinguishing characteristics of the classes. In doing so, they have implemented skills like: tabulating; drawing; observing; identifying and recording. They recently conducted a practical investigation whereby they had to observe and describe a member of the Mollusca phylum – the land snail – and tabulate the distinguishing characteristics of the four groups of invertebrates that they have been learning about.
GRADE 1 ART The Grade 1s completed their heart mural using pastels to create these stunning creations. GRADE 2s SHOW MR HUGGET SOME LOVE When Mr Huggett popped in to visit the Grade 2s, he was gifted a special crown and some beautiful, hand- made flowers. Thank you, Grade 2s for making Mr Huggett feel so special!
GRADE 5 SHARING This week the Grade 5s have been sharing more about themselves with their classmates and teachers. They needed to delve deep within themselves and answer questions ranging from which school value they live out the most, what they would change about the world if they could change only one thing, and even what animal they would best represent. They presented their thoughts in a poster that was uniquely theirs, and lastly did an oral presentation to the class. The Grade 5s now have more insight and understanding of one another after going through this process. Thank you for sharing your special and unique selves, Grade 5s.
GRADE 2 BONDS OF 12 This week we learnt Bonds of 12. The children used concrete apparatus to help solve their equations, with some extending themselves and attempting to write their own story sums using bonds of 12. They can be proud of their creativity! Oscar: I have 6 Lego blocks and my mom gave me 6 more. How many do I have now? Malachi: If I have 9 cookies and I get 3 more, how many will I have? If I had 4 rolls and I get 8 more rolls, how many rolls do I have? Zachariah: If I have 2 pies and my mom gives me 10 more, how many pies do I have? If I have 12 apples and my dad takes 1 away. How many apples do I have left? If I have 12 KL of coke (!) and I drink 7 KL, how many KL of coke do I have left? (and maybe a sore tummy too!)
SUSTAINABILITY AND BIOMIMICRY ‘Sustainability’ and ‘Biomimicry’ are hot topics around the Globe at the moment and the Grade 7s have spent the first 5 weeks of this terms coming to grips with what these concepts mean, and how we can learn from nature and adopt a more sustainable outlook on the world. This week the Grade 7s have been presenting projects to the class in which they have researched Sustainable people/organisations around the world. Research skills were integral to this project and the learning has been rich. The presentations have been impactful and it has been encouraging to see the amount of time and effort that went into these projects.
GRADE 00 OUTDOOR FUN AND FRIENDSHIPS The Dormice and Fieldmice children have thoroughly enjoyed the hot weather and playing in the sand pit has certainly been a hit! Learning to use the tyre and rope swings, as well as the rope bridge has been an exercise in control and coordination. New friendships are being formed and getting to know each other through play has got to be the BEST.
MAPS! In Grade 5 Social Science we have been exploring different types of maps, how to locate places and features on maps, and discussing why maps are useful. This week we discussed and worked with scale – why maps need a scale and how we use them. This involved a lot of practical application using string, rulers and converting measurements on a scale. Look out Google Maps, the Grade 5s may well give you a run for your money!
GRADE 4 NATURAL SCIENCE Being able to confidently compare and contrast is a skill all scientists should have. Our Grade 4s studied the structures of a king protea and lotus flower, colour coded the relevant information, tabulated the key points, and then used a Venn diagram to display the key structural similarities and differences. It was a lot of work, but some valuable skills were acquired. Well done, Grade 4s.
LOVE OF ANIMALS In Art and Drama this week the Grade 4s drew or painted animals, both domestic and some wild. We love that they use mixed media. MANNERS AND RESPECT In Grade 5 Drama our theme of manners and respect continued and wonderful, original plays were created. Afterwards the children gave positive feedback to their peers, which was so heart-warming. It was a great week of creativity.
NETBALL GOAL-GETTERS The Netball Goal-Getters had a blast at their recent session – all showing off their new kit!
FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS The Ladybirds have been busy this week practising threading with big beads. They have made the most beautiful, colourful friendship bracelets.
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF “BELIEVE IN YOURSELF” – Othniel Plaatjies The Grade Rs have been working hard on letter and number formations this week. Sound advice was given by Othniel to see the Grade Rs through these challenges.
NEEDS AND WANTS Today the Grade 7s completed a paired activity where they were presented with 40 human NEEDS and WANTS. The group instruction was that they were selected by their government to go to another planet but were only allowed to take along 16 items….some heated discussions ensued. Groups were given five minutes to make their choices….and then they were informed that because of the craft limitations only eight items were allowed…and then only four items! There was a general consensus of the four needs! Certainly a great way to end the week and to start a weekend!
GRADE 3 ART Ms Jaimey Harriss, a Rhodes Education student, has been working with the Grade 3s for the past two weeks. We are so grateful for her creative lessons and approach to learning. Her great talent is art, so she shared this with the Grade 3s as they learnt to draw their family, with specific guidelines about orientation, foreground and background. The children worked diligently and made beautiful family portraits. Students play an integral part in our School and not only do the students learn from the SH teachers and children, but we all learn a lot from them. Thank you Jaimey! The Grade 3 teachers have enjoyed exploring their creative side and teaching art while Ms Boshoff is on maternity leave. The Grade 3s made family trees using the outline of their family members hands for the bark and branches of the tree. We discussed different ways that the trees leaves could be created using coloured paper. The children enjoyed exploring different techniques to best establish which way they wanted to represent the leaves on their trees. Creativity provides opportunities for trying out new ideas, and new ways of thinking and problem-solving.
GRADE 1 MATHS The Grade 1s thoroughly enjoyed creating their own math sums, using their counters and their ladybirds. What a fun way to learn maths.
CRICKET Our cricket season has started with a bang. Our boys and girls are working hard on their skills and getting ready for the time when matches can resume. Our mini-cricketers have been focusing on their bowling and trying to get a stronger action. The main focus has been getting their bowling arm straight. The U11As took on the U13s in a two day game. The U11As batted first and managed to get a total of 47/4 in their allocated time. The U13s started off a little slowly but then some valuable runs from Qudo de Wet saw them to 47/3 needing 1 run from 1 ball. The final result was a draw. We are very excited to see that we have been allowed to play matches again. Our first match is against Bridge House on Wednesday 3rd March. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to have spectators. A letter will go home to all cricket parents explaining the procedures. SH CHAMPIONSHIP GALA Thank you to all our pupils who participated in swimming time trials this week. It was also great to be able to share the skill of time-keeping with some of our pupils. We are excited to announce that our SH Championship Gala will take place on Monday 8th March. The gala will follow a different format this year as we will run a Junior Primary (U7 – U9) gala and then a Senior Primary (U10 – U14) gala. The Junior Primary gala will take place from 12:30 – 14:00 and the Senior Primary Gala from 14:45 – 17:00. Unfortunately, no parents or spectators are allowed on campus yet, but we are delighted to be able to host this event for our pupils. One opportunity remains for those children who would like to try and qualify for the SH Championship Gala and this will take place on Monday afternoon from 14:30. Swimmers who have been successful in qualifying for the SH Championship Gala, will be notified by the end of next week.
MINECRAFT! The Grade 5s have started creating their own worlds in their curriculum-based Minecraft sessions. Minecraft Education is a game-based learning platform that promotes creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in an immersive digital environment. Minecraft also complements reading, writing, maths and history learning.
GRADE 3 LUCK DRAW One of the prizes a child can choose as part of our lucky draw prizes in 3H is to teach a lesson to the class on any topic of interest. We had 2 lessons this week. One on pets and animals and another on Greek Mythology. Mrs Hendrickse loves listening to her novice teachers presenting their lessons to the class.
