Friday 28th February 2020 Dear Parents, We’ve experienced a mixed bag of weather this week with two beautifully crisp and sunny days which we’ve enjoyed immensely; it was lovely to feel the warmth of the sun and so wonderful to be able to take our learning outside. Today, we have returned to the rain BUT it’s been sunny inside as our seniors have run their Fair Trade Tuck Sale which is always a hit and we’ve enjoyed Year 7’s class assembly on Fair Trade and the need to look after our global environment. There are always so many things to celebrate in school each week, not least the wonderful egg and cress sandwiches made by our youngest members of the school community, but the highlight for me was on Tuesday afternoon when we saw every member of Year 5 take to the stage in their performance of ‘The Forgotten Land’. The mixture of fairy tale stories was inspired and allowed so many of our children to enjoy solid character parts but without the pressure of ‘main’ parts and huge numbers of lines. It was a wonderfully vibrant performance, full of energy and enthusiasm – and SO much humour! I was, as ever, struck by the growth in confidence of many of our children, particularly for those whose natural environment is not the stage! I should like to extend very many thanks to Mrs Gill, Ms Stocken, Mrs May and Mrs Covell for their hard work in getting everything ready for Tuesday’s performance, and to the children for their effort, commitment and enthusiasm on the day. I should also like to bring you news that this week we were re-awarded the ‘Green Flag’ and continue to be a school marching forward with protecting our environment at the forefront of many of our activities. Two of our senior pupils took the Green Flag judge around the school and showed her everything we do to reduce the impact we have on our environment as well as promote healthy and sustainable living. I should like to thank Mr Lewis for the very hard work he has done in organising the Green Flag award journey. What a triumph! Next week, we look forward to the excitement of World Book Day on Thursday during which we are delighted and excited to be welcoming Martin Brown, the illustrator of Horrible Histories and Lesser Spotted Animals; it promises to be a fabulous day and made all the better by many of our activities taking place in our newly refurbished library. Just today, I have visited the library twice and found, on my first visit, some of our youngest pupils enjoying a story as they cuddled up on the beanbags with their teachers, and then on my second visit, absolute silence greeted me from Year 6 as every single pupil was engrossed in their own reading, some racked up together on the sofa, some at our café style tables and some curled up on the beanbags, too. It is lovely to see the space being used so much more flexibly and frequently now that the space is so conducive to study, reading and relaxation. Tonight is Quiz Night and I look forward to seeing many of you there as we rack our brains and pit our wits in year groups over a glass of wine and a delicious chilli. What better way to banish the winter rain and winds? I hope you all enjoy a lovely weekend ahead and I look forward to seeing you on Monday. All the very best, Mrs Sally Weber-Spokes, Head

The Forgotten Land – Year 5 Mrs S Gill What a marvellous performance by the Year 5 students this week in their show 'The Forgotten Land'. Every child stood with confidence and pride on the stage, showing their parents the talent and skills they have learnt throughout the year. Well done, everybody. Leila said: “I really enjoyed doing the show of 'The Forgotten Land'. I thought the Fairy Godmother (Sasha), Wiz Willow (Isla) and Wiz Walt (Eliza) were very good at opening the show. The Froggy Prince (Rufus) was very brave to stand up and sing the song 'Give Me a Kiss' on his own because that was embarrassing. The fairies were very good at their dance, including Harriet who was Scary Fairy. She was great because she had to pretend to be a bad dancer and she is really very good! We are all very grateful to all the staff who helped the staff who put on an amazing show.” Sasha agreed: “We had an amazing time on Tuesday doing our play called 'The Forgotten Land'. One of the highlights for me were the solos. I thought they were absolutely spell binding - that is a line from the play! The Magic Movers were also fantastic and thrilling with all their magical moves. The bossy step sisters were really funny and Cinders was great at expressing her emotions, but luckily she found her Prince Charming. Early Years & Pre-Prep You never know what you might find down at the bottom of the garden... This week Early Years have introduced their new topic of Minibeasts! They have already started their learning and have been excited to see what they can find in our garden. They have so far discovered Woodlice, Centipedes, Millipedes and even a Stag Beetle grub! We are hoping some of these creatures will make our Bug Hotel, that we made in Wild Woods, their home. The children collected natural resources to put in between pallets so the minibeasts can burrow in. They have also enjoyed sensory trays, small world areas and craft activities all themed around our topic. On Thursday we planted cress seeds and used our cookery skills to make yummy egg and cress sandwiches. Delicious!
Year 2 News Ms G Robbins & Mrs T Wilson Being Safe at Safewise! We had an amazing trip visiting Safewise in Bournemouth before the half term holiday. It is a fabulous place to learn about how to be safe and healthy; we rode a train, crossed a road, went shopping, walked across a heath land, wandered down to the beach and escaped from a pretend fire in a kitchen. We even had a delicious lunch in the park! The day finished by finding out how Eggbert stayed safe on his bike. We wonder if you can guess what he was wearing on his head? Party time in year 2! The children had a great time at their art party just before the holiday to celebrate collecting all of their class rewards. Children made bird nests, crowns, bracelets, necklaces and much much more! It was very messy but very fun!
Scenery Painting Mrs S Gill A big THANK YOU to Alaina, Annabel, Aidan and Sophie, who helped paint the scenery recently one weekend along with Mrs May, Mrs Gill and Mrs Covell. Everyone worked with skill and enthusiasm and an enjoyable time was had by all, transforming the damaged canvasses into Neverland. Other children have been helping design and create fabulous pieces of scenery during their art lesson. With a fabulous performance by Year 5 this week and the Year 6 to 8 play 'Peter Pan' being performed on March 17th, 18th and 19th, show fever is sweeping through the school! World Book Day – Thursday 5th March Mrs J Williams On Thursday 5th March we are celebrating World Book Day! We are very lucky to have the author/illustrator Martin Brown visiting us. He is the illustrator of the amazing ‘Horrible Histories’ series and the author and illustrator of the ‘Lesser Spotted Animals’ series. Throughout the day all the children will be taking part in exciting workshops with him. We would like the children to dress up as a character from one of the ‘Horrible Histories’ books or from the ‘Lesser Spotted Animals’ books to celebrate his visit.
Yarrells Sport News Years 7 & 8 Hockey Match v Sunninghill Wednesday 6th February 2020 Tom C reports… It was a stunning game at Sunninghill when we passed off to start the game. At first Sunninghill were strong and narrowly missed the post at one time, but we kept positive wile Luca D saved some great shots no matter how many kept coming. Eventually I managed to get past the defenders and score the 1st goal. Half time ended when Sunninghill took a shot and the ball went in however there was no goal. The 2nd half was also great and I managed to sneak another goal in. The game ended with a victory of two goals and afterwards we had match tea. I would like to thank, on behalf of the team, the sports staff for organising it, as well as Mrs Barnes for taking us and all the staff who prepared the match tea but most of all the people who made this fixture happen; Sunninghill. Well done to Blossom M, Year 5, who has been selected to participate in the 2020 Dorset County Pathway Development Programme.
