PE and Sport Provision at Atwood Primary Academy 2019-2020 PE and Sport Provision Sport takes a high priority at Atwood. Since becoming an academy in 2014, all year groups from 1 to 6 have been taught at least one lesson per week by sports specialists. This ended in July 2020 in favour of Atwood staff leading all PE and School Sport from September 2020. Staff have received Continued Professional Development (CPD) and support from Croydon School Sports Partnership in order to develop various aspects of PE provision. Resources are well stocked and a number of clubs are in place for the enjoyment of Atwood children. The school has continued to enter various Croydon leagues and taken part in festivals for many different sports. Our children enjoy their PE at Atwood. Atwood was awarded a Gold standard for sport from the Youth Sports Trust in 2018 in recognition for its commitment to school PE and sport. It must be noted that due to COVID 19, sporting provision has been dramatically affected since March 2019, however during lockdown, those children attending school took part in outdoor and adventurous activities instead. The Physical Environment - Indoor Provision Atwood has a large hall where PE can take place as well as a smaller hall which can be used for dance or fitness related activities requiring less floor space. Atwood has a variety of sporting and fitness equipment which can be easily accessed by teachers to support their teaching. This includes climbing equipment, professional gymnastic resources as well a wide range of equipment used in the teaching of invasion games and net/wall games. Each class has a hall time slot during the course of a week and these sessions range from 40-60 minutes allowing the children to excel in a wide variety of sporting and fitness activities. Outdoor Provision Atwood has great outdoor sporting facilities that boast a fully mapped permanent orienteering course. Atwood continued to host inter-school competitions, particularly football, cross- country, netball and hockey to name a few, until March 2020. Atwood has a large field now with 2 sets of permanent football posts for 7-aside matches and training and various sets of moveable goals which can be used in a variety of settings. There are now plans for a Daily Mile Track to be installed around the perimeter of the field as from September 2020, this activity is now mandatory. Addressing Pupil Voice, the Junior Playground now has a set of high quality, permanent basketball goals. This has been in response for our children wanting to play more competitive basketball, as well as a second set of movable basketball goals. Atwood used some of its Sports Premium Funding for this purpose. A further pledge from the FOAP also allowed the netball markings to be re-lined making the experience of matches much better for all involved. 1
Furthermore, addressing Pupil Voice, in 2019, 2 outdoor Table Tennis Tables were installed for the enjoyment of all. There is a trim trail and a climbing wall which are both used regularly during playtimes and lunchtimes. In addition, Atwood also has a garden area including a poly-tunnel which has been lovingly renovated to high standards by a diverse group of volunteers, during our ever-popular Dig for Atwood and DIY SOS weekends. Our Green Team (parents) and our Eco Champions (children and parents) do what they can to enhance the grounds for learning opportunities throughout the year. Atwood also has an orchard available for teaching and learning activities and for the children to use at break times in the finer weather; this has been left to develop naturally and now includes a 6m bell tent with stove to support our Forest Schools provision. The school backs onto Riddlesdown Common which is easily accessible through a back gate and is often used during cross country sessions and outdoor activities. In 2016, Atwood ran its inaugural Forest School activities for children in Nursery and Reception. This was very well received by pupils, parents and staff and this provision is set to continue in 2020 and beyond. In 2018, Atwood introduced the ‘Daily Mile’. Running from March to October, our children enjoy walking or running the ‘daily mile’ alongside their teacher in our great grounds, enjoying friendship, fresh-air and fun. From September 2020, we plan to install a rubberised surface for all-year round use in response to increasing the physical activity of children since lockdown. Sport and Physical Activity at Atwood The PE curriculum focuses on pupils enjoying active, healthy lifestyles where children respond positively to challenges and develop self-confidence and physical capabilities. Through sport and other physical activities, children learnt to increase their body control, co-ordination and dexterity. Children also learn about their responsibilities both as individuals and as part of a team. We encourage children to co-operate and compete fairly and abide by the principles of ‘sportsmanship’ at all times. Atwood believes it is important to win graciously and loose in good-spirit. An annual ‘Healthy Living Week’ is held where children get the opportunity to work with a different class teacher and take part in a wide variety of sports. The week culminates with a competitive ‘Sports Day’; a day of competitive team games and individual races. In 2016, Atwood introduced the role of pupil Sports Reps, who have been involved in deciding the direction of PE and school sport. The Sports Reps also planned and organised our annual Sports Day in June and were actively involved in increasing the level of participation and challenge of the event. Many of Atwood pupils represent the school at a high level. Children from Atwood have played for Crystal Palace, represented Surrey, Sanderstead and Purley for cricket and recently, Atwood pupils are taking part in diving competitions held in our region. Residential Activities Pupils in Year 4 take part in Camp Atwood in which they work as a team to pitch a tent and spend a night under canvas. During the day and evening of Camp Atwood, the pupils take part in a variety of exciting ‘Wide Games’ such as Flag Raider. Pupils in Year 5 visit Carroty Wood activity centre in Kent for two days. Pupils take part in the following activities: BMX biking, archery, orienteering, low ropes, high ropes, rock climbing and abseiling. 2
Pupils in Year 6 visit Stubbers activity centre in Essex for five days. Pupils take part in the following activities: quad biking, commando camping, archery, paddle-boarding, rifle shooting, tunnelling, bush- craft, kayaking, banana riding, raft building, rock climbing, sailing (picos), high ropes, jet-skiing, orienteering, abseiling and team challenges *All of the above is subject to COVID restrictions Competitions and Provision Atwood has been a member of the Croydon School Sports Partnership (CSSP) http://croydonssp.co.uk/ for the past six years and as such, is able to access and regularly attend competitions and events run by CSSP. This partnership has also allowed Atwood to make new contacts with various different sports and local clubs that has allowed us to start to set up new competitions and festivals giving more students of all abilities including SEND the chance to access these events, for example in the recent Panathlon event. Many clubs are on offer throughout the year including: Cross Country club, Football, Goal Keeping, Netball, Dance, Flexiflics Gymnastics, Athletics, Multi- skills, Tag Rugby, Tennis and Tae Kwondo Here is a flavour of the competitions and events Atwood pupils have been involved in during 2018-19: September- Tag Rugby (juniors), various Football matches (juniors), Cross Country (juniors) October- Cross Country Competition (infants); Cross Country Competition (juniors); various Football matches (juniors), Squash Cup (juniors); Tag Rugby League Qualifiers (juniors); Invitational Sports Festival in collaboration with Gresham Primary School November- Hockey Tournament (juniors); various Football matches (juniors); Panathlon (infants and juniors), Tag Rugby Festival; various Netball matches January- Hi 5 Netball competition (juniors), various Football matches (juniors); February- Pop Lacrosse festival (juniors), Gymnastics festival (juniors), Netball tournament (juniors), Cross Country tournament March- Girls’ Football Tournament (juniors); Hi 5 Netball tournament (juniors); Swimming Gala Finals (juniors); Cross Country fixtures (juniors), various Football matches (juniors); Daily Mile for all April- Hi 5 Netball fixtures (juniors), Mini Tennis Competition (juniors); Daily Mile for all May- Mini Tennis Competition (juniors); Daily Mile for all June- Healthy Living Week for all; Croydon Athletics- 3 days’ of competition (juniors); Mini Marathon (juniors), KS1 and 2 Sports Day and Family Picnic; EYFS Mini Sports Fun Day (EYFS); Daily Mile for all; Pupil Led Circuit Training for Infants (led by Year 6) July- KS2 Football Competition; Daily Mile for all The Senior Leadership Team and Governors have considered the 5 main priorities for the effective spend of the Sports Premium which are: The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity. It's recommended that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school 3
The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils Increased participation in competitive sport And therefore, to make these more operationally achievable, Atwood has ‘merged’ the 5 priorities into 3 Key Indicators, and these are: Key indicator 1: The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that primary school children undertake at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day in school Key indicator 2: The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school development, including increasing the confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport Key indicator 3: Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils with increased participation in competitive sport, especially at KS1 Leadership Overview The Headteacher oversees all sporting provision, however the day- to- day leadership of PE and school sport is delegated to a teacher. There are also two governors, Mr C Knightly and Mr C Jones, who are responsible for having the strategic oversight for PE funding spend across the school. Below is a breakdown of the spending for the academic year 2019-20. It also includes potential or planned spending for the academic year 2020-21.
