Wine Tasting at CYC By Jim Hannigan Clearwater Yacht Club hosted a wine dinner Saturday evening, April 17. A five course dinner so ably prepared by Chef Michael and his staff, paired with five varietals of C. Mondavi & Family wines. Greg Gauci, Vice President Southeast Division of C. Mondavi & Family, led the guests through the tasting. A bonus was Peter Mondavi joining in, via Zoom, to talk about his wines and share background and stories of his Familys’ jour- ney through the wine business. A group from the Venice Yacht Club were also in attendance, enjoying a most hospitable time courtesy of CYC. 6 CYC Compass May 2021
The Burning Chaplain’s of the Socks Log (and Masks?) By Father Bob Wagenseil, Fleet Chaplain Looking back to April, it was, for many, a month of blessings! Easter and Passover top that list but, at CYC, we included our long overdue “Blessing of the Fleet.” Now we have come to the “Merry Month of May” and it too holds the promise of blessings but of a somewhat different nature. The bless- ings I refer to are those of Memory and Remembrance. We pause each year during May to remember the members of our Armed Services who have “paid the highest price to be called an American” and they paid that price from Flanders Fields to the Beaches of Normandy, from places with names like Iwo Jima and Tarawa, Inchon, Hue, Khe Sanh, Fallujah and Kamdesh. Memorial Day is not just an excuse to party hearty but a solemn occasion of sacred remembrance for those who put their freedom aside and their very lives on the line so that we might continue to enjoy the blessings of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Yes, life itself is a precious gift, and May is also cyc our month to recall our earliest memories and give thanks for those special women who made the gift of Book club life possible for us in the By Diane Switalski first place. By Joe Lane, Editor Anyone who’s ever been on the water when the winds are “blowing like stink,” appreciates its solemnity. The Blessing of the Fleet states poignantly the finality of which Tennyson’s bar refers. Whether it’s the dirge of the bagpipes, the salt laden wreath bobbing in reverence, or the bell tolling as each name is read aloud, the moment is not lost on sailors. Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, when I embark; For tho’ from out our borne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar. Alfred Lord Tennyson We remember those who passed, we ask His blessing on the ves- sels on which we risk our lives, and petition for safe return to our home port. Arguably, the best tradition CYC celebrates, returned this year. To all who attended, thank you for your participation. You made this year’s Blessing of the Fleet truly memorable. 8 CYC Compass May 2021

Cruisers By Gary & Sondra Newcom Hello from the Cruisers . . . As you are reading this Compass, some of the Cruisers are venturing off on our 3 week long trip for the year to the East Coast. Most of us left April 15, heading to Venice Yacht Club for one evening. From there, another one night stay at the City of Ft.
