FC Augsburg Club Portrait Halil Altintop FC Augsburg’s football philosophy has won many friends among Germany’s elite. The club, in its current form, was founded in 1969 as a merger between BC Augsburg and TSV Schwaben. While playing in lower divisions, FC Augs- burg became famous for the successful educa- tion of the German internationals Helmut Haller and Bernd Schuster. Their subsequent ascent be- gan in the early 2000s. After reaching the Bun- desliga 2 in 2006, the club finally gained promo- tion to the Bundesliga in 2011. Playing in a brand new stadium, called SGL a rena, FC Augsburg vi- talised the Bundesliga with a dynamic and well- organised style of play and respectable results. Finishing in an impressive 8th place at the end of the season 2013/2014, the team from South- ern Germany has demonstrated that they are on their best way to becoming an established force in German football. 16

SV Werder Bremen Club Portrait Nils Petersen SV Werder Bremen is one of the most successful teams in Bundesliga history which is impressively demonstrated by their second place in the all-time Bundesliga table only be- hind FC Bayern München. As one of Bundesliga’s founding members, SV Werder Bremen became a dominant force in German football. This is under- lined by winning the Bundesliga Championship in 1965. In the mid-1980s and early-90s former head coach Otto Rehagel led the club to signifi- cant success. The Bundesliga titles in 1988 and 1993 as well as the back-to-back DFB-Pokal tri- umphs in 1991 and 1992 are ample proof. Ad- ditionally, the triumph in the European Cup Win- ners’ Cup in 1992 was an extraordinary highlight in the club’s history. Former head coach Thomas Schaaf, who stayed for 14 years in the city of Northern Germany, shaped another era by creat- ing a team that became famous for its attractive style of play. Brimming with stars like Ailton and J ohan Micoud, SV Werder Bremen had its peak in 2004, when team captain Frank Baumann lifted the ‘Meisterschale’ as well as the DFB-Pokal to the sky. In recent years, the appearance in the 2009 UEFA Cup final with stars like Mesut Özil, Per Mertesacker, Diego or Claudio Pizarro caused enormous international attention. 20

1. FC Köln Club Portrait Patrick Helmes The winners of the very first Bundesliga title in 1963/1964, 1. FC Köln can look back on a multi-faceted history in German football. On the one hand, the club had significant achievements by winning two Bundesliga Championships and four German Cup titles between 1964 and 1983. The founding president of the club, Franz Kremer, was one of the masterminds be- hind the founding of the Bundesliga and the im- plementation of professional football in Germa- ny. The 8th place in the all-time Bundesliga table highlights the prominent role of the club which is well-known for its very loyal and passionate fan base with more than 60,000 members. Sever- al excellent players like Hans Schäfer, Wolfgang Overath, Toni Schumacher, Pierre Littbarski and Lukas Podolski became famous in the long-last- ing history of the red and white coloured club. On the other hand, the biggest team in Co- logne was relegated to the second flight five times in the past sixteen years. However, they managed to come back after each relegation and are try- ing to become a sustainable force in Germany’s top flight after their last Bundesliga promotion in 2013/2014. Another feature of the nicknamed Billy Goats is the fact that their official mascot is a living billy goat, called Hennes, the current being Hennes the VIIIth in the club’s history. 34

Borussia Mönchengladbach Club Portrait Raffael No club in Germany enjoyed as much national success in the 1970s as Borussia Mönchengladbach. With five Bundesliga Cham- pionships, two UEFA Cup triumphs and one DFB- Pokal title, the team featuring stars like Jupp Heynckes, Günter Netzer, Berti Vogts and Rainer Bonhof – all part of the German World Cup win- ning national team in 1974 – will be remembered as one of the greatest ever. The spirit of those times is still notice- able within the BORUSSIA-PARK where near- ly 55,000 spectators create an electrifying atmosphere on every matchday. The contem- porary team thrills the fans with a modern and fresh style of play and has developed to be a sustainable contender for the top places in the league. FC Bayern München Club Portrait Philipp Lahm The Bundesliga’s record title-holder FC Bayern München has been a dominant force in German football since the end of the 1960s. Since 1969, only three times more than two years passed without Bayern München getting its hands on the precious trophy. 24 German Championships and 17 DFB-Pokal wins under- line the outstanding role of Germany’s most suc- cessful club. Main personnel supplier to the national team, FC Bayern München also boast by far the largest membership of any club in Germany and after reaching the UEFA Champions League final three times between 2010 and 2013, the Bavar- ians finally lifted the desired trophy for the fifth time in club history in 2013 as a part of their his- toric treble-winning season. With the earliest win of the German Championship in Bundesliga his- tory as well as the title defence of the National Cup, the season 2013/2014 can be named as a record-breaking one not only in the long history of FC Bayern, but also in the long-lasting history of the Bundesliga. 42

VfB Stuttgart Club Portrait Vedad Ibišević VfB Stuttgart is one of the most historic and successful clubs in German football. The im- portant role of the team from Southern Germa- ny is underlined by the fact that the three-time Bundesliga Champions (1984, 1992 and 2007) spent 50 out of 52 years in Germany’s top flight. More than that, the club’s history is filled with several outstanding generations of Bundesliga players such as the German internationals Gui- do Buchwald and Jürgen Klinsmann in the 1980s, the so called ‘magical triangle’ including Kras- simir Balakow, Fredi Bobic and Giovane Elber in the 1990s as well as the ‘young and vivid’ play- ers Timo Hildebrand, Kevin Kurányi, Sami Khedira and Mario Gómez in the 2000s. In particular, the German Cup title in 1997 under the guidance of the subsequent national coach Joachim Löw, the appearance in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1998 and especially the Bundesliga Championship in 2007 can be pointed out as important achievements within the last two decades. 48
