CONTRIBUTORS CONTENT EDITOR BARBARA REISINGER, a new convert to the Basenji way, has toppled head-over-heels for the breed. Happily possessed by her two half-African Basenjis—Disa and Spyros—she is driven by the purpose of the African Stock Project and its goals for our dignified and crafty breed. Having been deeply involved in the sport of flyball as a participant and trainer for over 14 years, she has had the honor of leading hundreds of handler/dog teams to have fun and success in the sport. Barbara is dazed with the myriad of activities that she and her husband, Jared, are able to do with their Basenjis, simply because they are Basenjis. From the conformation ring, to the lure course, on into the barn to hunt, she has eagerly ensconced herself into the depths of the Basenji tribe. T E D DY L E I ADVERTISING EDITOR SUZANNE LA CROIX MS PhD is a co-chair of the BCOA Performance Events Committee, which administers the Versatile Basenji Program, and serves on the Board of Directors. Her interest in basenji versatility evolved from her early humbling obedience experiences with her first basenji, Piper. Suzanne persisted, however, and Piper earned an AKC Rally leg at the tender age of 13! Fortunately, Piper was a pioneer in other areas including building/ narcotics search, animal assisted activities, and even bite work. More recently, Suzanne has been training Piper’s grandkids for barn hunt, nosework, and agility. C H E R Y L E R T E LT KRISTEN MARSHALL DVM (page 34) is currently on sabbatical from breeding, showing, and lure coursing to complete a residency in Emergency and Critical Care at Purdue University (after graduating from veterinary school in 2012). Her first basenji entered her life in 2000. She lives with two senior tri-color basenjis that kindly tolerate her crazy schedule, which has included five moves in the last five years. How sweet they are! KATY SCOTT MD (page 26) has owned and loved basenjis since 1992; she currently lives in Tucson, AZ with her three basenjis, Khonsu, Jane and Ra, her ILP Canaan Dog Nut, and two miniature poodle adolescent boys, Zen and Garner. Khonsu and Janie are Field Champions, and Janie went BOB in lure coursing at the 2008 Nationals. Katy, Nutty, Khonsu and Janie have successfully and colorfully competed in agility, obedience and rally obedience. Ra, Zen and Garner are in training.. THANK YOU TO THE SMALL ARMY IT TOOK TO PULL THIS YEARBOOK TOGETHER. Terry Colbert, Jane Johnson, Julie Jones, Susan Marsicano, and Linda Siekert. Kyle Cabral, Eunice Ockerman, and Rich Scherzinger for advertising layout and design work. Also, thanks to everyone that created their own ads. Jared Reisinger created an awesome “specialty slurper” tool to pull all of the Specialty results from the AKC website. Connie Camp had the unenviable task of helping me correlate and normalize all of the new title information. And for lots of little things that add up to huge help: Susan Chuvala, Bryan Gregory, Laurie Gregory, Laura Mae Hesse, Janet Ketz, Suzanne La Croix, Brenda Phillips, Susan Marsicano, Barbara Reisinger, Jared Reisinger, Sarah Smith-Falkner, and Denise Vertrees. 18 BCOA Bulletin (JAN/FEB/MAR/APR 2016) visit us online at www.basenji.org www.facebook.com/basenji.org BCOA Bulletin (JAN/FEB/MAR/APR 2016) 19

TRAINING TIPS Katherine M. Training outside can be a whole different and different types of about turns in due course. Instead, for this world than training inside. You may need to go all the way back to training tips installment, today’s topic is tips I wish I had known the beginning even though your dog knows how to do something years ago. perfect inside. Th is same thing applies to the difference between the backyard or the training center, and the front yard. Or the front 1 Do not train when you or your dog are stressed or angry. yard and the park. Or the agility or obedience or rally or show ring. Both of you need to be relaxed and ready to play the game. At the same time, you are training your dog consciously, or not, at all 7 Keep up the rewards throughout your dog’s life when they do times you are together. They are almost always watching you, so what you want. It may be a simple, but highly reinforcing reward, be consistent in what you do. If they are not watching you, you are such as: going outside after they sit nicely for you; a release to go not interesting enough in that particular environment to overcome sniff the “pee-mail” on plants when out for a walk if they maintain their focus on something else. a loose leash; a cookie hidden somewhere on your person for reorienting back to you when there is something interesting to look 2 Training should be fun for both of you, although both of you at, like a squirrel. OK, in case of a squirrel, if your dog reorients to might get frustrated. You know when you feel your frustration you, have the biggest party of all time! rising, and you know your dog is frustrated when they show signs of stress. You are the teacher; keep patient, stop what you are doing, and think of another way of approaching the subject. What you are doing that is confusing to your dog? If you have taught your dog to sit in front of you, but they keep swinging to get in front of you when you ask them to sit at your side, there are many pleasant ways to teach the sit at side clearly. 3 If you want to teach a particular behavior, have a very clear idea in your mind of what you want it to be, and train accordingly. You want a fast recall to you? Where do you want your dog to be once they reach you? Sitting straight in front of you looking up at you adoringly? Would you simply be happy if they came and stood in front, allowing you to reach their collar? Or just in the general vicinity around you? You can train all of these as different behaviors, but you do need to keep the goal in mind, so you can be consistent in your training. 4 Keep formal training sessions short, throw in a lot of behaviors they already know so they can succeed, and play, play, play. You got one great sit? Don’t go for a second until after you have heavily rewarded your dog with high value treats or play, including lots of praise. 5 Don’t be afraid of looking silly. Your dog doesn’t think you look silly; don’t care if people think you look silly. Th is is all about you and your relationship with your dog. Ready? That’s teamwork.
