. Recording Secretary PCA Board Conference Call Minutes – September 18, 2018 Attendees: Kathy Allen, Ann Bowley, Brian Brubaker, Stacy Czekaj, Nancy Guagenti, Helen Lawson, Nancy Kelly, Jim Moen, Carolyn Nusbiskel, Paula Van Laanan, Maggie Witwer. Absent: Linore Cleveland. Meeting Called to Order at 9:07PM ET MINUTES UPDATE – All minutes have been completed and we are up to date. Unless changes are posted in the next day, Board approval is assumed. TROPHY DONATIONS VIA DUES RENEWAL FORM – Linore posted a proposal regarding this form. She pointed out that historically, we allow contributions to a “Trophy Fund” and these funds are actually used for prizes at the next National Specialty. She recommended we add a line to the form allowing contributions to cover costs of shipping and storage of our perpetual, challenge and rescue trophies. There was discussion that any motion should not refer to the words or terms to be used, allowing the Treasurer to choose whatever best communicates the two types of donations. MOTION: I, Nancy Guagenti, move that a line be added to the Membership Dues Renewal form to help cover transportation and shipping costs of our perpetual, challenge and rescue trophies. SECOND: Brian Brubaker. Motion carried unanimously. TROPHY ISSUES – 2018 NATIONAL AND LONG TERM – Brian led this discussion. Gail Schroth is retiring from the Trophy Coordinator job, but she will ship all trophies to Springfield. We need a plan about how to get them to the 2019 National Specialty in Greeley, CO. We first discussed challenge trophies. There was strong support for asking all winners to take their trophy home with them, do the engraving and be responsible for getting the trophy to next year’s National. There was also support for not requiring a deposit, but simply ask the recipients to sign an agreement. Carolyn volunteered to get the recipients to sign agreements at the National this year. MOTION: I, Brian Brubaker, move that winners of challenge trophies be expected to take them home with them, get them engraved as appropriate for the trophy, and get the trophy to next year’s National Specialty at their own expense. SECOND: Stacy Czekaj. Motion carried unanimously. There was considerable discussion of perpetual trophies. Costs are high to ship them without damage, due to the weight of the wooden boxes. This year, several Board members agreed to take a few perpetual trophies home from Springfield, get them engraved as needed and ship them to Colorado at PCA’s expense. This solves the problem this year. If this approach works, it is hoped in the future both club members and board members will volunteer to do the same for perpetual trophies. VIDEO AT THE 2018 NATIONAL – Ann reported no videographer has been scheduled. Stacy said that in 2017, only 6 videos were sold even though the quality was superb. She suspects the live streaming from the show caused the reduction in demand. BOARD COMMUNICATIONS – Jim reported the Slack website and app may be a possible replacement for Facebook. He will be contacting Board members to get signed up for the Slack system so the Board can evaluate it. INFO ABOUT OUR 2017 NATIONAL SITE – Nancy Guagenti reported that the club which does the allbreed show at Lebanon, TN, where we had our 2017 National, contacted her with new information. They very much would like PCA to consider doing our National there again. A new hotel is being built next door. Various issues experienced with their first year at this site are being addressed, for example, being able to leave dogs crated later in the day to allow owners to go to dinner. Paula asked if this might be a good site for our 2021 National. 2019 NATIONAL UPDATE – Maggie talked about our option to hold a concurrent Specialty on Friday, the first day. This would be our National, held in the morning but separate from the Herding Breed show. It is likely we could complete this by about noon. The local club could arrange to schedule the Puli breed in the herding breed show after lunch, and the BOB winner could then complete in the Best in Herding Group competition. With Regionals in conjunction with the All Breed shows on Saturday and Sunday, Puli News—December 2018, Page 4
this would hopefully provide options for 4 majors that weekend. The board agreed that Maggie should bring this up at the 2018 National and look for member feedback. Adjourned at 10:40pm PCA Board Meeting Minutes – October 18, 2018 at National Specialty Attendees: Kathy Allen, Ann Bowley, Brian Brubaker, Linore Cleveland, Stacy Czekaj, Helen Lawson, Jim Moen, Carolyn Nusbiskel, , Maggie Witwer. Absent: Nancy Guagenti, Nancy Kelly, Paula Van Laanan. Meeting Called to Order at 1:40PM ET PULI NEWS MAILING COSTS - Linore reported PCA is spending nearly $2,000 per year to prepare paper copies of Puli News for mailing. This is in addition to the printing and actual mailing costs.. Previous Boards had hoped that offering the option to receive full color Puli News online would be adopted by most members. However, currently most mem- bers are receiving the printed/mail version. Linore has some ideas that may lower the costs, such as finding a cheaper printer and doing her own mailings, rather than the printer charging us to do it. Board members as well as Club mem- bers attending the meeting offered various ideas, including charging $10 to help cover printing and mailing costs. It was also suggested the online Dues Renewal page be updated to have the default be online, and requesting a printed Puli News would require explicit action. Consensus in the room was that a fee of $10 to receive a printed/mailed Puli News was reasonable. MOTION: I, Linore Cleveland, move that PCA charge a $10 fee per year to those members requesting a printed and mailed copy of Puli News. SECOND: Carolyn Nusbiskel. Motion carried unanimously. PULI HANDOUTS FOR MEET THE BREEDS – Jim explained the Board had seen another club’s handout on a small card, and had asked if Linda Hall would be willing to make up a simple single page or card handout highlighting the Puli. This could be made for those doing Meet the Breeds booths for the club. We already have an excellent brochure, of course, and we have a full page (both sides) handout that Barbe has used at Westminster MTB. But this second handout may be useful to some booth visitors. The Board has authorized funds for printing the new card. TROPHY UPDATE – Brian explained Gail Schroth had resigned from the Trophy Coordinator position and had shipped all trophies to the hotel. He mentioned that shipping costs often run about $2,000/year when all trophies need to be shipped. Carolyn reported on the Board’s September motion that PCA expects Challenge Trophy winners to take the trophies home, get them engraved and get them to the next National at their own expense, and that this year, she had volunteered to get signed agreements from winners to that affect. She noted we no longer ask for a deposit. While this approach will hopefully lower our costs regarding Challenge Trophies, we still have the problem with Perpetual Trophies. Richard Tannen volunteered to investigate a cheaper way to ship, and in years when needed, volunteered to store the trophies. He will get back to the Board on this idea. NEW PULI OWNER PACKET – Helen explained her idea for the club to provide breeders a free packet to breeder for giving to new Puli owners. It would contain information about the breed as well as a letter encouraging the owner join PCA. Several breeders showed interest in the idea, but suggested Helen work with breeders on the content, to help address needs the breeders have seen in their experiences with new Puli owners. Helen will pursue this project with breeders. 2019 NATIONAL SPECIALTY UPDATE – Maggie talked about current plans. The National will be held Oct 26 through Oct 28, in Greeley, CO. The host hotel is new and is encouraging dog clubs to hold their Specialties there. It is only a short drive from hotel to show site. Maggie asked for feedback about the idea (suggested by the local club hosting the first day, which is a Herding Breeds show) for us to hold a Concurrent Specialty (separate from the Herding Breeds show) as our National, then later in the day, Pulik could compete again in the Herding Breeds show. This would give 2 chances to win and hopefully 2 chances for majors on Friday. Saturday and Sunday would be Regional Specialties, so this approach would provide 4 chances to win that weekend. She admitted Specialties are busy times, but majors are increasingly Puli News - December 2018, Page 5
difficult to build. Feedback from members was mostly positive. She had had de- clining health due to cancer the last few years but never wavered in her positive outlook on life. Born Muriel Lorraine Carley on February 1, 1932, she was the eldest of two daughters born to "Tex" and Mae Carley of Cotati. She is preceded in death by her par- ents, sister, Joanna Weiss and her loving husband, Kenneth Walraven. Lorraine lived most of her life in Sonoma County and as a child lived on a seed farm on Snyder Lane, which is now Rohnert Park, owned by Fred Rohnert and managed by her father. She graduated from Santa Rosa HS and attended Sonoma State University. In later years, the seed farm turned into a hay ranch, which she managed after her father's death. She lived a few years in Roseburg, Oregon but returned to her beloved Sonoma County she called her little piece of Camelot. During her work years after managing the hay ranch, she worked for the Press Democrat newspa- per in the real estate and classified departments. Oh how she loved the newspaper! She got bit by the dog show bug in the '80s and spent many hours training and showing Hungarian Pulik. She belonged to the Puli Club of America as a past president, Puli Club of Northern Califor- nia and the Sonoma County Dog Training Club. She had many "dog show" friends. Although competitive, she was always and forev- er kind. Lorraine was an excellent cook, baker and gardener teaching her family her cooking and gardening skills. The matriarch of her family, she will be missed by many but especially by her devoted family, daughters Betty Clapp, Denise Scott (Alan), son Tom Wilson (Nancie), niece Allison Weiss Holden and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. A special thanks to her Kaiser doctors Kaur and Andersen, the loving care of Memorial Hospice and We Care Home Assistants. . PCA Annual Meeting Minutes – October 20, 2010, Enfield, CT Jim Moen called the meeting to order at 8:30p.m. Brian Brubaker thanked everyone for coming to this year’s National Specialty and also thanked all the volunteers who helped to put the event together. OFFICER/COMMITTEE CHAIR REPORTS A motion was made and seconded to dispense with reading of officer and committee reports. These will be in the December issue of Puli News. NOMINATING COMMITTEE Jim Moen stated the Board will be selecting the next Nominating Committee during the Board’s next conference call, which is in November. JUDGES FOR THE 2020 NATIONAL Ann Bowley reported the ballot counters had completed their job on October 19, 2018. Counters were Ann Bowley, Valarie Cheimis, Linore Cleveland and Sandra Schickendanz. Top votes went to: Michael Canalizo, William P ( Bill ) Shelton, Linda Robey, Pat Hastings, James A. Moses, John P. Wade, Beverly Capstick, Judith A. Brown, Danelle M. Brown, Harry H. ( Butch) Schulman. TOP TEN AWARDS Jim Moen presented the Top Ten Awards to this year’s winners. Meeting adjourned at 9pm. ANNUAL COMMITTEE REPORTS AKC Gazette Breed Column Committee Report Four Puli breed columns were prepared for the AKC Gazette: · 2017 Puli National Specialty (March 2018) · Essential Oils and Your Dog’s Wellness (June 2018, with Jenn Latusek-Nabholz) · Pulik as Achiever Dogs (Sept 2018) · Cords: The Puli’s Crown (To be published in Dec 2018) As was the case last year, the columns are uploaded to the PCA website (with permission from AKC) by Jim Moen and reprinted in Puli News by Linore Cleveland. The columns also are advertised on the PCA Facebook page and as appropriate, on the Performance Pulik Facebook group page. I very much appreciate the support of folks who contributed content or proofed the information I put together. A special thanks to Patty Anspach for digging around in the historian files for me as I’ve needed information for a wide topic of articles. I have a few ideas for future columns, but always welcome suggested topics. Respectfully submitted, Dagmar Fertl Book of Titleholders The Book of Titleholders is currently up to date with allnew titles through August 2018. I continue to add Call Names and historical information as it is published in Puli News, supplied by Members, or through research I have don e in the Archives. Puli News - December 2018, Page 9
As always I encourage ourmembers to contact me if they see any discrepancies or to supply title information not AKC affiliated. We are able to include titles other than AKC if we are provided with backup to verify these titles. Thanks once again to all those who have provided information on certain Pulik when needed, particularly our foundation stock. I encourage all our members to use this valuable resource. It is our History! Respectfully Sumitted Pam Erstling PCA Calendar Editor PCA Calendar Mailing Oct. 2017 to Oct. 2018 With the generous help of everyone who has submitted their wonderful puli photos, I was able to produce another PCA calendar. 215 were printed in 2017, at a cost of $1,776.57. I did what I could to promote them, using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Puli News ads and PCA email blasts. Most of them sold, and they brought in a profit of $2,010.92 for puli rescue. This year I found a printer with a much lower price (but equally good quality) and had 200 printed at a cost of $807.32, so am expect- ing even higher profits this year. 35 calendars to be available for purchase at the PCA Specialty. I monitor the orders from the PCA website order form on a daily basis, so all calenders sold are shipped out within a day or two. I welcome any assistance from members to help promote these calendars. Word of mouth and positive comments on Facebook helps tremendously with selling them, and raising more money for puli rescue! Linda Hall Herding Earlier this year I reported to the Board that there wouldn’t be Herding this year. Since then, I also related that I could not continue being Herding Chair. The Board needs to search for someone who would be able to do all the leg work required for this position. AND the Membership needs to step forward and fill the positions that have been left vacant . Too long the Club has depended on a few. I am willing to help anyone who takes over the Herding Chair Respectfully, Patty Anspach Historian For a few years I have asked the Board to address how to resolve the fate of excess books the Historian has accumulated. I have put forth the suggestion that the books be sold on E-Bay and the remittance be forwarded to the treasury. It has been a losing proposition to sell the books at the National. For instance, the Les Benis book has sold on E-Bay for $120. I could only sell it for $60 at a Nation- al. By selling on E-Bay, you can rech a much larger audience. List of books in possession of the Historian This Is The Puli—Benis (qty 2) — sells for $100+ The Complete Puli —Owen (qty 1) Best of Puli Keynotes—varied authors, a publication of the Puli Club of Southern Calif. Media Coordinator Report This year we have been using the FB page as another way to get the word out on all of our Club activities. We continue to get more followers. We don’t get much interaction, but I believe that is because it has never been encouraged. We did some test posts asking for people to post pictures of their Puli and activities. People seemed to like that and I believe we should continue When members send me items for Throwback Thursday I post those as well, but we need members to help out on this one by provid- ing photos. I have been asked by a number of people if we can post various show results and post asking what shows people are going to. This is something I would like to try out as a weekly or Bi-monthly post asking if people are trying to find majors or points to post what shows they re going to..they can also post agility trials and herding events. People will be able to post in the comments and figure it all out themselves If the Board is OK with this we can start after the Specialty. Any committee Member that needs info posted can contact me at anytime to have info posted on the FB page. Valarie Chemis Web Page The web page is keeping current. Jim Moen changed some behind the scenes things with our host service to help the site work better. We have been updating events and content in a timely manner to keep people updated. We do have some pages that could be updated with newer pictures and nicer format, but the main pages are all good. If any committee would like their pages updated they just need to let me know and we can work on it. Again updates rely on Member contributions. I am not sure if we want to think about making website/FB/Media all under one committee since it is for the most part the same info on both. I think it would be much easier to find someone to help with both of these now that it’s just updating info as needed. Valarie Chemis Puli News Puli News is published each quarter. The March issue features the top Conformation Pulik, the top Obedience Pulik and the top Rally Pulik. The June issue features the top Agility Pulik and the new Versatile Pulik. The September issue features the top Herding Pulik. The December issue features the National Specialty. Each issue in full color is available, as soon as completed, on the Puli Club web- site (and a note is sent to all members alerting them to the availability). Approximately two weeks later a printed (black/white) edi- tion is sent to those for wish a printed copy. Beginning in 2019, a $10 charge is instituted to help cover the cost of the printing and mailing. The largest expense for the Club each year is Puli News — membership fees do NOT cover the cost of printing and mailing of Puli News. Linore Cleveland Obedience Statistician Report 2018 PCA Report Submitted by Nancy Kelly Pulik competing in regular obedience classes in 2017 has been very low with only six dogs successfully competing in regular classes Ther have ben a few competing in the Optional Titling Classes which will hopefully led them to competing in the regular obedience classes in the future. While 6 different dogs competed in all levels of obedience, Pulik achieved new obedience titles: CDX (Companion Dog Excellent) UDX2 (Utility Dog Excellent 2), UDX3 (Utilty Dog Excellent 3), OM4 (Obedience Master 4) and OM5 (Obedience Master 5). For 2017 5 titles were earned by two dogs The new titles earned are: CDX—1 bitch, UDX2-1 bitch UDX3 – 1 bitch, OM4—1 bitch, OM5 –1 bitch. I am sorely disappointed in this decline. The Puli is a very smart breed and can do well in obedience, just look at our history and achievements in this venue. Percentage wise, they are very high for the size of our breed. Suggestions as how to increase this number participating in obedience would be welcome. For 2017,m Rally Obedience statistics were tracked. Julie Schuh is the statistician for these. Valarie Chemis has updated the obedience tab ot the PCA website as I send her information. ,. Puli News - December 2018, Page 11
Agility Committee Report 2018 The Puli Club of America sponsored a three day agility trial over the February President’s Day holiday weekend in 2018. The trial was held undercover in a horse arena in Santa Rosa, CA. The Trial realized a net profit of only $290.11. We would have lost money on this trial, but the Trial Secretary waved her fees. Agility entries are down in California, so our profit was also down. We plan to have one more trial in California in 2019 and if we do not get a better entry we will discontinue it. On the bright side, Dagmar Fertl has worked to put on an agility trial in Texas. The first trial will be during February 2019. We ex- pect this trial to be more profitable. The contract states that we will receive $2000. The profits from both trials will be used to subsidize Herding, Agility and Obedience at future National Specialties. This helps allow those events to be held even if they cannot monetarily break even on their own. I produced the Top Ten Puli Agility list for 2017 based on the annual AKC Agility report. This Top Ten Agility List was published in the Puli News June issue. The report indicated that only 18 Pulik competed in agility during 2017. This number is down from the high of 39 in 2012. A summary article ‘2017 Puli Agility Highlights’ was also published in the June issue of PN. During 2018, expenses included the cost of the annual agility report from AKC which is used to determine the PCA Agility Top Ten List. This report costs $120. The costs associated with the February 2018 PCA Agility Trial in Santa Rosa, CA were covered by entry fees. A complete accounting was sent to Treasurer Linore Cleveland. Submitted by Cathy Pronzini Versatile Puli Award Program 2018 The Versatile Puli Award program was implemented in 2001 as an incentive to encourage Puli owners to try training and competing in different dog sports. So far the program has been successful, with 113 Versatile Puli Awards claimed by PCA Members for their Pulik. In 2017, there were three new Versatile Puli Awards. Each Versatile Puli receives an Award Certificate and a photo with write-up in the June issue of the Puli News. It is planned that each year’s VP information will be updated to the PCA website as soon as possible. The cutoff for the annual Versatile Puli Award requests is December 31. So if you have a Puli that qualifies, please send me the infor- mation before the year’s end. In 2019 we will be updating the Versatile Puli Awards requirements due to the large number of new titles that the AKC has imple- mented. More information to come. The only cost associated with the VP program this year was the postage to mail the award. Submitted by Cathy Pronzini Puli News—December 2018, Page 12
Annual Awards Program 2018 I produced the Recognition and Awards Booklet that is distributed at the Annual Banquet. It includes: · A list of all the new titles earned by Pulik during 2017 · The Top Ten lists for 2017 o Conformation (All Breed, Puli Breed, Owner Handled) o Obedience o Agility o Rally o Herding · A list of all new Versatile Puli Awards. I printed Top Ten Certificates for each member Puli that was recognized on a Top Ten list. I purchased two plaques for first time Best in Show and High in Trial winners, Brass ‘Dangles’ for Best in Show and Obedience High in Trial wins and a trophy for the Number 1 Puli in each category. This year the trophy for the #1 Puli was a personalized set of stone coasters. My costs were: · BIS / HIT Plaques for first time winners $ 111.76 · BIS / HIT Brass Dangles $ 418.00 · Top Puli Awards for each Discipline $ 116.86 · Blank Certificates of Top Ten forms $ 80.48 · Printing charges for Recognition Booklets $ 253.63 · Shipping charges for Recognition Booklets $ 35.25 · Shipping charges for awards not picked up at National $ 123.41 Total 2017 Awards costs: $1139.39 A complete accounting of costs was submitted to Treasurer Linore Cleveland. In an effort to reduce costs for 2018, I plan to look into a smaller sized Plaque for BIS & HIT first-time winners. The cost for BIS & HIT brass ‘dangles’ is expected to be significantly less for 2018. Submitted by Cathy Pronzini NO REPORTS No reports were received from the following committee s: Judges Education, Member Education, Membership, New Member Welcome, Puli Post, Rally Statistician, Supported Entry Coordi- nator, Trophy Coordinator, Puli News - December 2018, Page 13
