Leadership Message I think it is safe to say that none of us has ever experienced a year like 2020. For many, it was a year that tested our resolve and pushed our limits. And yet in the wake of trying times there were important lessons learned and opportunities uncovered. The onset of physical distancing and Zoom calls led us to rethink how we interact with each other and conduct our business. The world changed in March, and Habitat Edmonton’s world was no exception. And yet, in the midst of uncertainty, our team had major accomplishments. Golf Tournament Raised $50,000 It is not easy to hold a golf tournament in the midst of a pandemic. However, our Fund Development team ensured that safety protocols were followed to the tee, and brought the fundraising component entirely online. The tournament was a success as new people were introduced to Habitat’s work and we raised over $50,000! ANNUAL REPORT 2020 | 7
The founder of Habitat for Humanity once Bringing said... “Everyone who gets sleepy at night Communities should have a simple, decent place to lay Together their heads, on terms they can afford to pay.” The Habitat program helps families transition from renting to owning an affordable home, with a goal of one day graduating from the program by selling their home back to Habitat to purchase a home on the open market. In order help families, Habitat brings together communities to make home ownership a reality. Volunteers, donors, and community partners do the heavy-lifting so that our families will prosper. 8 | ANNUAL REPORT 2020
“Nobody looks at themselves as being in a position to change the world, but these type of projects do change the world. When we The Rotary donated all have a strong foundation, we’re stronger individually and collectively, and we can $980,000 to the project. then do greater good in our world.” Bringing Communities Together: A Donor’s Perspective The Rotary Club of Grande Prairie worked alongside Habitat Edmonton to provide eight affordable homes in their community. The region had experienced a housing crisis for many years, and the nature of economics in the north was taking its toll on the affordability of housing. After hearing about the specifics of Habitat’s program, the Rotary Club explored what a partnership with Habitat might look like. “We discovered that Habitat was an excellent fit with Rotary’s values,” said Tyla Savard, President of the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie. “There are great programs for affordable housing in Grande Prairie, but Habitat’s program helps to transition families from renting to home ownership, which is something that is desperately needed.” “When Rotary invests in a project, we look at the potential impact on our community and the project’s sustainability. Each Habitat home creates generational change for multiple families over the lifetime of the house. That lasting impact is definitely there.” Rotary is all about connections, and connecting with others is crucial to building a strong community. “We were blown away by the magnitude of the project and its impact upon parents and their children and our community,” said Tyla. “When we presented keys, my cheeks were hurting because I had such a huge smile. Even though we couldn’t hug or shake hands because of the pandemic, we shared a deep connection with the families, our business community, neighbours, and others.” ANNUAL REPORT 2020 | 9
Bringing Communities Together: A Volunteer’s Perspective Don Neufeld was aware of Habitat Edmonton from its genesis. It was founded by Dave Hubert, a friend whom Don had known his whole life. Also, Don’s daughter, Carolynn, was a member of the board and served as chair of several committees. Don soon became an active participant at Habitat who has volunteered 20,500 hours. He has filled many key volunteer roles and continues to volunteer his time. Over his 25 years with Habitat, Don has seen people from various walks of life join together to strengthen their community. “Homeowner families, volunteers, and entire neighbourhoods are enriched as they work together,” said Don. “In 2008, Habitat volunteers, donors, and staff completed a nine home project, and to celebrate with the families receiving keys, we obtained a permit to close the street, set up a sound system, and followed the usual routine of speeches and key presentations. Then, unexpectedly, some neighbours on the street asked if they could use the mic. They warmly welcomed the families and brought out tables and home baking to celebrate.” One of the greatest strengths of the Habitat model, according to Don, is that it mobilizes communities to help parents, children, and their future generations step into a much better life. When a family graduates from the Habitat program, their home is refurbished to serve another family. The donations and volunteer labour that go into each home result in significant benefits for homeowner; however, they also benefit the entire community, as more families gain access to affordable home ownership. The Habitat program truly does bring communities together to create a lasting difference for families. “I remember a sunny Saturday when a large group of volunteers gathered in front of a home to celebrate alongside a family who was about to receive their house keys. I noticed a large, strong man who had volunteered for the project standing nearby with tears running down his face as the family received the keys to their home. This image had a big impact on me.” - Don Neufeld 10 | ANNUAL REPORT 2020
“Habitat doesn’t say, ‘here’s the house; see you later’. Everyone involved with Habitat is willing to help and is so friendly. There is always support and we all need support. It doesn’t matter who you are, you can’t always do everything on your own. You need people to help you, whether it’s with a home like me, or help with something else. We’re all here to make our community stronger, and we all play a role.” - Kimberly Bringing Communities Together: A Family’s Perspective Kimberly and her three children moved into their home in late 2020. The home was built in Spruce Grove in 2010 by loving volunteers and donors who contributed financially and volunteered thousands of hours to bring the homes to completion. The home was sold back to Habitat by a previous homeowner who graduated from the program to purchase a home on the open market. Kimberly needed to move her family into a healthier housing situation; however, every avenue she explored had brought her back to square one. After a friend tagged her in a Habitat Facebook post, Kimberly explored the Habitat program, and applied. She was then accepted into the program. “I was working three jobs to make ends meet and was paying ridiculous amounts of money for rent,” said Kimberly. “Habitat has given me freedom. Freedom not to worry about finances as much, and freedom to make the home our home. Now we have the ability to go on a family vacation and other things we couldn’t do before. Owning a home is a big step in life and to be able to make that step as a single mom was a really big achievement for me. It means stability for me and my children– no more moving around, and for that I’m very grateful.” Thankful for the support from Habitat, Kimberly has been living up to her partnership agreement by putting in her 500 volunteer hours at Habitat’s ReStore in west Edmonton. She spends her time organizing shelves, putting products together and serving customers. Her oldest son loves going there and enjoys everyone there. Every part of Habitat feels like a community, and that’s important to her. ANNUAL REPORT 2020 | 11
Building and Buy Backs 12 | ANNUAL REPORT 2020
Building Our construction team was busy in 2020 with homes being built or renovated in Edmonton, Cold Lake, Grande Prairie, and Rocky Mountain House. We were deeply saddened to temporarily close our build sites to our volunteers due to the pandemic. However, despite losing our most valuable resource – our volunteers – we were able to finish two homes in Edmonton, eight in Grande Prairie, and ready homes in Cold Lake and Rocky Mountain House for occupancy in 2021. We are grateful to the volunteers who contributed hours from January – March and for those who participated in our Prefab Shop when we were able to re-open. Although our volunteers were unable to participate on our build sites, they still found ways to contribute in a safe manner. Special thanks goes to our volunteers who helped in our ReStores and offices as well as those who delivered flyers and assisted with other projects. We are incredibly thankful for our volunteers’ flexibility, understanding, and dedication to helping us to serve families. Buy Back Program The Buy Back program has been a vital part of Habitat’s success since it was implemented in 2005. In this program, Habitat will buy back homes from homeowners who graduate from our program in order to serve another family who is looking to purchase an affordable home. Here is how the Buy Back program works: 1 2 We buy back the home and the homeowner The homeowner notifies graduates from the us when they wish to sell program with the equity their home. that they have accrued. The Buy Back program allows Habitat to serve a family for a fraction of the cost of building a new home. In 2020 there were 32 families who sold their homes back to Habitat and started a new adventure in market home ownership! ANNUAL REPORT 2020 | 13

The Habitat ReStore: Shop. Donate. Volunteer. Every visit to a Habitat ReStore is a new adventure! From vintage items to building supplies, ReStore is a treasure trove of household goods and unique items. All of the products in our stores are donated by individuals and companies whose generosity helps us grow the Habitat program. Our customers are regularly amazed at the quality and quantity of the products we sell. Whether you are looking for seasonal items, renovation materials, tools, or home improvement items, our ReStores should be the first stop on your list! Like most retail outlets, our ReStores experienced the impact of the pandemic throughout 2020. The reality of physical distancing and masking caused us to rethink how we integrated our volunteers and how we served our customers. Our staff demonstrated ingenuity, bravery, and commitment to our cause, and as a result, our ReStores were able to operate effectively through Facebook Live feeds, phone purchases, and curbside pick-up until our doors were re-opened at limited capacity. In 2019, we began exploring opportunities to open a ReStore in Sherwood Park and in 2020 we secured a location at 7 Streambank Avenue. Once the building was constructed, our volunteers and staff rolled up their sleeves to ready the store to open in January 2021. As excited as we were about the new opportunity in Sherwood Park, we also had to say goodbye to our beloved ReStore East at 6909 76 Avenue. ReStore East was opened in 2010 and served our customers well for a decade. We were blessed to have had ReStore volunteers who generously gave of their time throughout the year. Volunteers helped us serve customers, load and unload vehicles, stock shelves, fix items, and the keep the stores tidy and organized. Volunteers are integral to the success of the ReStores, and their hard work and commitment to Habitat is evident with every single shift. The Prefab Contribution Centre A key area of focus for Habitat Edmonton continues to be sustainability. In order to maximize effectiveness and minimize expenditures, we continue to use our prefab shop as a revenue source to offset operational costs so that a greater percentage of donor dollars are allocated to building homes and serving families. Our prefab shop enables us to build year-round unimpeded by weather while ensuring the quality of the walls, decks, floors, and other items we construct. The shop allows us to reliably run our Adopt-a-Day program, tool training, and painting workshops, which generate revenue for our affiliate. The prefab shop also allows us to hold special events for which we would otherwise need to pay venue costs. In 2020 we continued to seek partnerships to strengthen our prefab social enterprise. Through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Region, our staff and volunteers prefabricated walls for four homes for our neighbouring affiliate. We also were approached by a company who was awarded a contract to frame a seniors’ complex. Volunteers and staff completed the walls for this project in our prefab shop and then the walls were shipped to site. Our volunteer-run upcycling program continues to contribute back to our affiliate. The upcycling program involves volunteers using donated items and leftover materials to create masterpieces that are sold in our ReStores. ANNUAL REPORT 2020 | 15
