Dear Y Members and Friends, As my time as Association Board Chair comes to a close, I reflect back on the remarkable impact our Y continues to make. I feel privileged to have served alongside dedicated staff, volunteers, Y members and community partners; all with a common goal, to strengthen the foundation of our community. During my four years as Board Chair, we have focused on laying the groundwork for continued growth in both Oconomowoc and Watertown. We restructured our debt and have reduced what we owe by $769,585. We hired our new CEO, Jon Lange, and implemented a structure that would allow autonomy for our two branch boards with support from a small association team. With solid operations and decreased debt our improved finances allowed us to focus on our deferred dreams and future needs. In 2017, we rolled out a strategic plan that was centered around the health and well-being of children and families while continuing to deliver quality services and programs for adults and seniors. With this clear direction, we experienced growth in our child care, after school and day camp programs. We are further poised for the future and have positioned our Y for significant growth, especially in Watertown and its surrounding communities. As you read through the stories and accomplishments highlighted in this 2017 Impact Report, you will notice we haven’t been afraid to attempt things that others might shy away from. In fact, there is one common theme, whether preparing youth for a promising future; helping families and seniors stay connected; or extending support to those who need it — #thisYcan! This Y can do just about anything we set our sights on. It’s been my pleasure to serve as your board chair during this exciting and pivotal period in our YMCA’s history. Thank you all for helping to make it possible. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Pictured above: Sara Wisniewski, YMCA Youth Site ACTIVE AND ENGAGED: Y FUEL Coordinator with a group of students from Ixonia Elementary. A $60,000 grant from the Greater Watertown Community Health Foundation supported several new efforts including a partnership between the Y and Ixonia Elementary called Y FUEL (Fun, Unleash, Excel, and Learn). This program provided a positive, productive recess experience for all students, resulting in increased physical activity, greater self-confidence and more than a 30% decrease in social conflicts. “Healthy social interactions and active options for play are important in creating a positive school culture at Ixonia Elementary. We also know that strong relationships are critical in fostering a safe, engaging learning environment. The FUEL grant from the Greater Watertown Community Health Foundation facilitated a new relationship between the YMCA and the Ixonia School community that has given our students the unique opportunity for organized, positive activities with adults and peers. This relationship continues both on and off the playground since Sara is a part of our entire school day and into the evening with YMCA Great Escape After School Care. As a result of the grant-funded FUEL program, our data indicates that there has been an increase in positive behaviors throughout our school, leading to more focus on learning! We are so grateful this will continue to be available for our students during the 2018-19 school year!” -Stacy Yearling, Ixonia Elementary Principal

HEALTHY LIVING Pictured above: Catherine and Dale Puisto FEELING PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER: COMMUNITY When Catherine and Dale Puisto decided to move to Oconomowoc a year and a half ago, their son urged them to tour the Y. They were impressed and joined shortly after purchasing their home with the intent of keeping good mobility and overall health through cardio and resistance training. “Classes at the Y have given a nice sense of structure to our days. We are very grateful for the good selection of Active Older Adult classes.” They shared, “Being new in the area, it has really been a benefit to be part of the vibrant, multi-age membership at the Y, with so many friends and people we enjoy interacting with.” Since joining, they have expanded their goals to include increased flexibility, core strength and endurance. They can consistently be found at the Y several times a week enjoying water exercise and chair yoga together as well as brisk walks on the indoor track in the winter. Catherine also enjoys group cycling, traditional yoga and Pilates. “We truly are part of a community at the Y. We have “pool pals” and “exercise buddies” in all of our classes. Our instructors know us on a first-name basis and take the time to answer questions and help us become proficient in their classes. So happy to spend time with so many, many caring folks at our Y!” “Because of the Y, we feel more at home in Oconomowoc than we could ever imagine—especially in such a short time. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Pictured above: Joey Curtin with children from Esperanza Viva. LIVING OUT OUR MISSION In 2017, the YMCA at Pabst Farms took on the challenge to enlist and equip a team of volunteers to serve internationally through a partnership with Living Hope International. Our purpose was to make a difference in the lives of our members, while having a positive impact on the children and staff who call Esperanza Viva home. Esperanza Viva is an orphanage and school for children who have been rescued from the streets of Puebla, Mexico. After several months of training in 2017, our team of eleven spent a week in February, 2018 serving, loving and caring for over 100 children and staff at Esperanza Viva. Under the amazing leadership of volunteer team leader Joey Curtin, our Y team provided a week of crafts, recreation, photography, haircuts and relationship building. And those relationships will last a lifetime. Through her experience as team leader, Joey commented that, “A short-term mission trip to Esperanza Viva Youth Home is like experiencing our YMCA’s mission statement in practice. Sharing this life-changing opportunity with a group of fellow Y staff, members and friends from the community felt like a natural extension of what we already do at YMCA at Pabst Farms. I am very grateful to be a part of what ‘This Y Can’ do and for the continued support as we begin planning for 2019.” Miranda Weston, team member, noted that this trip “was a life-changing experience…a leap of faith for me and exceeded all my expectations.” Pictured above: The Y’s Mission Trip volunteer team in Puebla, Mexico.
