Managing Editor Laurent Saletto Many people have asked and are still asking how you can possibly stay together for all that time editor@linedancermagazine.com and still care enough for each other. The simple answer to that one is “Work at it!”. Having spent close to 12.000 days together I can’t, hand on heart, say that every hour has been dreamlike Editorial Assistant and fantastic fun. But you know what, I look forward to the next 32 years, or whatever we have Dawn Middleton left together. dawn.middleton@linedancermagazine.com And that brings me to loyalty and how far you would go to keep someone or something you love Webmaster in your life. Line dance has known peaks and troughs, ups and downs and many people who used Paul Swift to dance don’t anymore. Many blame the lack of Country music, the western wear that does not paul.swift@linedancermagazine.com exist anymore, the fun element that has gone out of dancing but the truth (or part of it) is that you cannot blame other influences all the time as to why people want to leave. There are many Dance Editor clubs who just play Country, many clothes available (and we are all free to wear what we want Steve Healy as long as it is decent!) and laughter to my knowledge has never been banned from dance floors. steve.healy@linedancermagazine.com Assistant Dance Editor So, isn’t it simply that many people have an inbuilt boredom threshold and go from one thing to Kath Butler another. One year it is Jane Fonda’s exercise video (do you remember ‘Feel the burn!’), the next kath.butler@linedancermagazine.com Callanetics, the next Line dance. Isn’t it worrying that perhaps the renewal of interest in dancing only stems from TV shows and eventually as viewers are sure to desert this glut of programs, we Advertising Sales will once again struggle to talk dance, never mind Line dance, in public? Among the dancers were Tom Dvorák Louisiana Pisek Tjeckien, Marja Van Toorenburg Millcorners Holland and Hanne & Reiner Muller Linedance Connection Tyskland. Cennet Karlsson told us: “Thanks for all the happy faces and thankfully we even got sunshine on the Sunday. There are lots of photo’s that will be updated on our website soon. I must also thank to Mullsjö sok who assisted with the construction and removal of the dance floor and Sheriff (Rolf) who faithfully works for one week a year with this event. We are now starting to plan for 2011.” Frank’s For The Boot Choreographer, Frank Trace, won a Crystal Boot Award this year for his Absolute Beginner dance Mamma Maria. Unfortunately Frank was unable to attend the Crystal Boot ceremony but Big Dave and his wife, Pauline, recently travelled to America and kindly took the award and presented it to Frank on behalf of Linedancer magazine. 13
Rachael Is A Hit Tina Summerfield and the Silver Star Line dance club from Verwood, Dorset, went to Torquay in June for the Rachael McEnaney weekend. “We had so much fun and learnt six new dances in the workshops held over the weekend, as well as revising all Rachaels top tens including Rhyme or Reason and Bobbi With An I. We learnt a fabulous new dance by Jo Thompson Symanski, True Love Two Step and Rachaels new dances contained all the exciting and different choreography we expect from her, these included Hesitation Blues and Snap Your Fingers. We danced to Sierra County Disco both Friday and Saturday evening with Rachael doing her show stopping demo on the Saturday, she wowed us all with her beauty and grace on the dance floor. We would like to thank Rachael for all the fun and for her patience in the workshops. We would also like to thank Sierra County Disco for their wonderful organisation of this event.” Independent Girls Maureen and Michelle held a social at The Peace Memorial Hall, Penkridge, Staffordshire to celebrate American Independence Day. Dancers splashed the room with colour as they took to the dance floor in a variety of red, white and blue outfits. They told us: “Hats, shirts, skirts, jeans, and table decorations were all selected to reflect the theme resulting in a striking combination of colour throughout the evening. A broad range of dances was played covering golden oldies, recent and very new dances and all types of music. This ensured that all dancers had plenty of opportunity to join in the fun on the dance floor and the room echoed with laughter and enjoyment.” Dancers always rise to the challenge of dressing to reflect Maureen and Michelle’s themed socials. Their August Line dance is a ‘Hot Summer Social’. Watch this space. Singing Star “Natalie Thurlow sang her heart out to an almost full house and in the extreme heat we have been experiencing,” Stephanie and Vince Lindley from the Country Music Dance Club, Tithe Farm Social Club in Harrow told us. “We were delighted that so many people attended. Natalie’s repertoire was huge from old classics like Black Coffee to up to date Quarter After One. Her singing is exceptional and her instrumental talent is enormous, what a star she is. We very much look forward to her return. Michelle Risley was also there and in the break she went through a lovely fun dance of hers called the Smiling Song.” Teach Them Young “We have just been teaching Line dancing at a big meeting of all the taught them in groups and chose a representative from each group Shropshire Girl Guides and Brownies at Wellington in Shropshire,” who then had to dance in a competition at the end of the day to find Barb and Alan Heighway of Feel The Beat in Telford told us: “We the best dancer.” 14

Pat theme was the World Cup so we chose our dances accordingly and Roberts proudly told us: “The fever was contagious and people flew each country’s flag. First off was Italy with Mamma Maria were excited everywhere. Flags of every country were being which we did contra, then for USA we did Crazy Foot Mambo to hoisted upon houses, cars etc. We were so proud to be hosting Guitars And Cadillacs, followed by England with Walkin’ In The this wonderful event that we held a Line dance social with the Rain even though it was brilliant sunshine. This was followed by theme being World Cup Soccer 2010, which proved to be a Under The Sun for Brazil and ending with Irish Stew for Ireland.” wonderful, festive event.” Johannesburg is still reeling from the effects of Maggie Gallagher and her brand new dance Wakira. Maggie attended the Outlaws Breakout Weekend hosted by Nancy Mawdsley and her Outlaws S.A.Line Dancing school. Nancy told us: “Maggie demonstrated and taught the dance to students from all over South Africa. The music for the dance is the official 2010 FIFA World Cup song, sung by Shakira and Jo’burg band Freshly Ground. The timing of the release of the dance couldn’t have been better as the whole of South Africa was alive with World Cup fever. We were honoured that Maggie choreographed the dance especially for this event.” ‘Where To Dance’ Shared Celebrations “Recently on holiday to Cyprus I would look up clubs on the ‘Where to dance’ pages in Linedancer. I ended up going to Silver Spur Line Dance Club in Limassol twice and I met Linda from Linda’s Limassol Liners,” Brian Matthews told us. “It all started with a visit to Pyrgos Line dance class just outside Limassol. I had a great time and I was asked to teach them one of the two Line dances that I have choreographed called ‘I’ve Been Here Before’ and it seemed to go down well. I would like to thank all the people I met and their friendly welcome. I am over 70 now and have been dancing for some ten years and have lost count of all the friends I have made. I dance at home at In Step in Cambridgeshire and Black Stallion in Suffolk.” ISSUE 171 COMPETITION WINNERS HEY ROMEO WINNERS Mrs. C. betweenTHElines Your chance to comment A Chilli Cruise It’s Good To Talk Referring to Dear Dancers in issue 171, we can assure Mr. Saletto that we do know the difference between ‘origin’ and identity’. Of course dancing in a line has probably been going on forever in one form or another but as he says that’s unimportant. What we are talking about is the identity of Line dance as we have known it for the last few decades which was what attracted most people to it in the first place. Can you imagine going to a salsa class and having to dance to Lady Ga Ga or the latest pop hit or dancers in nightclubs trying to dance to classical music? What about the street dancers, I don’t think they’d take too kindly to not being able to dance to their usual music style. Of course there are pop and rock songs that suit the Line dance style. Very early on we enjoyed Backstreet Attitude and we still love Chill Factor, for example but the choice for the country lovers is now very limited. Sadly we know many of our friends have left our classes because of the change in direction Thank you so much for the gift of a CD by Chilli Gold as a prize for guessing the mystery of the music now being used. We even picture on the Linedancer website. I received this two days before setting sail on a went to a class where the instructor actually holiday cruise. Emily Nobody but Homesickness is something that most immigrants have to contend with when they move to a new country. Emily was no exception when she came to Canada in 1997. She returned home to Hong Kong frequently and just couldn’t settle. Then six years ago her husband died suddenly leaving her with three children. She was very depressed but a friend had an idea to give her a focus. Emily had started Line dancing a few years earlier and enjoyed it, so the friend reckoned it was time for Emily to teach. Calling her Line dance club ‘Raindrops’ to reflect the many tears she cried during this period, Emily started with a large class that over the year gradually dwindled. As Emily told me: “I knew how to dance but not how to teach.” Emily has the most captivating personality which the students appreciated but they said they just couldn’t follow her. Emily had learnt that teaching was not easy but she became determined. She paid attention to other instructors she liked and spent much time wondering how she could help her students learn. She told me that she realised that a good dancer and good teacher are different things. Emily proved she was a good student herself and for the last three years she has been teaching 12 classes a week. There is now no question of her not retaining her students. She also trains assistant teachers who teach another five classes. Together with her delightful helpers, she also organises dance events that attract over 300 dancers who know that ‘anything’ can happen at one of Emily’s parties! Andrew and Sheila, Lizzie Clarke, Dee Musk and Craig Bennett have all been welcomed as special guests at one of Emily’s high energy parties. As Toronto became to feel more like ‘home’, Emily took her love of Line dancing further afield into the community. Twice a week Emily teaches and demonstrates Line dancing on WOW TV - Toronto’s multi-cultural channel. At one time she and her team performed Jai Ho and then taught the presenter a mixture of Jai Ho and Scotia Samba. Emily is also very much involved in charity work and has been teaching and demonstrating Line dancing at events such as the Asia Festival for the last three years and at the Markham Stampede where she danced on stage with the Mayor. Roy Thompson Hall is one of Toronto’s largest concert halls and World Vision
Words to describe talented Canadian Instructor/Choreographer Emily Woo have got to be a ball of energy, madcap, charismatic, generous, thoughtful, and yes, a little bit crazy… Vivienne Scott finds out that you definitely can’t help but have fun with Emily around. Emily laughs: “The stage was not as big as we had thought as the band took up a lot of the space so we had to be adaptable, plus live music is very different from a CD.” Nevertheless, the organisers were delighted with their performance and commented that they could see that ‘the team danced with their hearts’. Although Emily has only recently ventured into choreography, her dance ‘Nobody But You’ has catapulted her to fame with close to 110,000 views of her video 19

homean We always talk about Line dance communities and how close Sue Marshall, LineViners, Wilsden, Bradford I met Liz last November. It happened through the fantastic Carol Craven World Line dance Newsletter I receive every day. She comes from Tampa, Florida and like me, teaches easy Improver/Intermediate classes. We started e mailing each other about what we were teaching dancers are. Well, and a long distance friendship grew from there. Eventually I felt here’s one good comfortable (in spite of a lot of adverse advice) in inviting her over. She too had to think it over for a while but eventually agreed to come. example. We visited Fort San Antone in Birchwood unusual…. and the atmosphere was just great. Liz discovered new things and enjoyed her evening, I think. We also danced together at my classes and she taught Quarter After One though she said she was nervous. The class loved her. Along the way, that week, we danced Rhyme Or Reason (which I taught), Black Butta, Pot Of Gold, Galway Girls, Walking In The Rain and many many more. An eclectic choice to be sure. The few days Liz was with us passed very quickly and when she left to return home, I felt we still had not shown her enough but she made a promise that she would return after her husbands retirement in a couple of years. I just can’t help thinking how lucky I am to be part of such a brilliant community…. That is what being a Line dancer is all about! 28
ndaway Liz Smith, Silver Liners, Tampa, Florida It all started last year when I read an e mail on the World Line dance Newsletter asking about Ipods and dance classes. I replied and from that day on, Sue and I exchanged almost daily e mails about our experiences as teachers and as dancers. When I accepted her invitation to come on over, the world around me started to ask very worrying questions. Was I crazy? What if she was an axe murderer? Once on the plane and at the airport, customs asked me very similar questions. As I went through the doors, I remember thinking that perhaps I had made the wrong decision. However as soon as I met them all worries disappeared as a pair of lovely, smiling faces met me complete with a sign that said ‘Liz Welcome’. From that moment on, I had a dream week. When we got to San Fort Antone in Birchwood, I was introduced to dances I never had encountered. The dancers dedicated ‘Red Hot Salsa’ to me which I learnt on the spot. The ladies at each class that Sue teaches to were so friendly and one of the classes gifted me with a fabulous embroidered shirt which I am wearing with pride. A reminder of a fabulous week. My visit was nothing but fantastic. I was not really that interested in tourist spots, I wanted to experience Line dance UK style and live the English way. That we did and I am grateful to all my new friends who have made my stay so great. I cannot thank Sue and Colin enough for their kindness and their care , opening their hearts and their homes to their friend from the United States. Sue is coming to the Tampa Bay Line dance Classic and I am very much looking forward to see her again then. I loved the British pubs and the Fish and chips! 29
