David Newman says: “Red, White and Blue was this years colour theme to partly honour and celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.” Thanks Ma’am Harold Starkey and his club, Star Stompers, 80 dancers. Also in June, one of our dancers sent the Queen a handmade card with their Jocelyn Lace, was one of the Olympic warmest congratulations on her Diamond torchbearers. She was nominated for her Jubilee. He told us: “We got the most beautiful voluntary work as a swimming coach.” Star reply. Happy Birthday Robbie Robert Lindsay was at an event in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire recently, where he was helping to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Unit at the local hospital. Mary Murray told us: “It was also his birthday so some of his friends also helped him to celebrate by giving him a surprise birthday cake. I would also like to thank Robert for a great weekend at Tynemouth where he taught his dance, Smoochin’. We all had a great time.” Rodeo Girl to the rescue Line Dancing Dinner Lady Turns 60 Since they started teaching Line dancing 12 years ago Maureen and Michelle have been followed by their ‘Line Dancing Dinner Ladies’ who attended their first class. One of the dinner ladies, Janet, turned 60 in July and there were celebrations throughout the classes as well as week long celebrations for Janet with family and friends. The Girls told us: “Janet is a fantastic example of a devoted Line dancer. She injects laughter and light heartedness throughout the classes, often singing along or even adding her own musical accompaniment via clickers or whistles. She never stops smiling and she has hardly missed a class over the whole 12 years. We would like to say a huge thank you for her fun and support over the years and wish her many Rodeo Girl Line Dancing held a special night night class held a special fundraising night more fun-filled years of Line dancing!” for Roleystone Horse Sanctuary in Bradford. recently and raised £55, another dancer Diane and Donna told us: “This sanctuary had homemade jam to sell and raised £15. has been blighted over the last year by theft Rodeo Girl added £30 to this to round it and arson. BD’s Birthday “BD Linedancers in Coatbridge Scotland was started 16 years ago by Joy Wright along with the help of Mary Reid, Sadie Chalmers and Margaret Elliot who is sadly no longer with us,” Lindsay McNeill says. “Over the years people have come and gone but the faithful have always remained and we also have some new members this year too. The group have done many charity nights with local and some not so local groups benefiting. The one thing that we all agree on is that the dancing is always fun and we are delighted to see our group going from strength to strength. We celebrated our birthday with a party. As usual there was dancing, fun and laughter and to round off the evening a lovely fish supper was provided. So a huge thank you must go to everyone who makes the effort on a Wednesday evening as you all make our dance class such a special place to be.” Gay “Loved Life” “Sadly our friend and club member, Gay Jill). Gay loved dancing from the moment (Gaynor Jeanne Garton) lost her fight she started, enjoyed all the weekends against pancreatic cancer recently,” Jane away and was always ready to take part from Steps ‘n’ Stetsons told us. Gay started in everything. In class she always loved Line dancing in 2000 when she joined Just the ‘sing-along’ dances and in particular For Kicks in Arborfield and was in their Come Dance With Me. Gay’s joy was her demo team for several years. When JFK family but the service held in her memory became Steps ‘n’ Stetsons, Gay was one showed how much she affected many of many original members who became other people. The chapel was crammed steadfast supporters of the new club, full with family, members of the book club becoming one of the support team, she belonged to and the choir she loved helping decorate the hall for socials and singing with, her Line dance friends and collecting the money on the front desk of course many friends that she had met (which she loved because it meant she along her 64 years. She will be sadly could talk to everyone). The photo shows missed but she will be remembered Gay surrounded by two of her closest as someone who (as the minister said) friends (from left to right Wendy, Gay and “loved life.” Jubilee Demo “Here is a picture taken of the Easy Strollers Demonstration Team who danced at a Residential Home in Clevedon for their Jubilee Street Party, the street had to be inside because of the rain,” Val Vella told us. “We danced Dancing in the Dark to ‘Singing in the Rain’, London Rhythm Swings, Caballero to ‘I Can’t Tell A Waltz From A Tango’, ‘I Saw Linda Yesterday’, ‘Crepes and Drapes and Drainpipes’, ‘Just A Memory’, finishing up with Til Forever, our favourite dance.” 14 • August 2012 www.linedancermagazine.com
Annual Fun Annie Harris and AC’s Line Dance Club were delighted to have Robert Lindsay once again at their annual social in East Sussex. “We had dancers from SAKS of Bexhill and several other non club members who came along for the afternoon and evening and thay all had a great time. Robbie is always such fun and makes his workshops really enjoyable with no pressure. He had recently returned from Euro Dance in Southport and taught his two dances launched there, ‘Smoochin’, the afternoon favourite, and ‘It’s Beautiful’ as well as Andrew and Sheila’s ‘My Chair’. We also had plenty of time for social dancing which was good as Pauline and Gill. Thanks to DJ Michal for making this event such a success, we had a wonderful homemade strawberry cream playing everyone’s requests and keeping many complimentary comments and are tea had been provided by two of our ladies, the dance floor full and to everyone else in already looking forward to next year.” Double Celebrations Fancy Feet in Blackpool have done nothing hat. Lucky Weather “Here is a photo of my dancers at the Eccleshill Village fair,” Margaret Cawood from Bradford in West Yorkshire, proudly told us. “We must have had one of the best Saturday’s for weather in a long while. This is the second year the fair has taken place and it was twice as big as last year and very well attended and organised. We did shortened versions of about ten dances and people were amazed at the variety of rhythms and tempos of the dances. Thanks for your super magazine and the new feature where you can get the dances and songs, what a super idea.” On The Prom! Another successful weekend was held recently by Alan and Jacqui. They told us: “Friday evening in Lytham St.Annes got off to a lovely start, the room was buzzing with excitement as guests arrived, some for the first time, others on their 7th annual visit to The Inn On The Prom. We then had a night of social dancing with one quick teach. We were thrilled to wake up on Saturday to some beautiful North West sunshine and after our morning workshop we enjoyed drinks outside with our Dutch friends Jan and Bertie, while others spent their free time wandering along the sea front or ventured round the corner for a bit of retail therapy. Some of the dances taught over the weekend were, Lido Shuffle, Living In The Moment, Care, I Didn’t Know, Time Bomb and Dedication To My Ex. A big thank you to everyone that attended.” Well Done You “I have returned from a Peter and Alison weekender in Southsea with guest choreographer and instructor Kate Sala,” Stacy Drye told us. “It was a great weekend for choreography. Among the dances Peter and Alison taught were Together We Dance, Lucky Strike and Kate taught Dancing with Cupid and Radioactive. The theme for the weekend was ‘Fire and Ice’ and in honour of the theme Alison played a selection of fire-related dances such as Playing with Fire, Firecracker and Hotter than Fire. Kate also reprised her dance Fire on Ice from a few years ago which was a lovely touch to Saturday evening. The hotel has a lovely location with breakfast being served overlooking the sea, with nothing being too much trouble for the friendly and helpful staff. Overall it was a great weekend, well done Peter and Alison!” 16 • August 2012 www.linedancermagazine.com
