SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM • THE DIGITAL AGE HAS TRANSFORMED SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION, ALLOWING OUR STUDENTS EXPERIENCE HISTORIC EVENTS VIRTUALLY • INCREASED DEPTH OF UNDERSTANDING OF OUR GLOBAL SOCIETY AND CULTURES DUE TO CONNECTING WITH OTHERS AND ABILITY TO EXPLORE • STRUCTURED AROUND GUIDING OUR STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE CORE DEMOCRATIC VALUES, THE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF AMERICAN CITIZENS, AND HOW KEY PEOPLE AND EVENTS IMPACTED THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE AMERICAN HERITAGE • STANDARDS GRADE BANDS • BY THE END OF GRADE 4…. • BY THE END OF GRADE 8…
SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM • NEW JERSEY STUDENT LEARNING STANDARDS FOR SOCIAL STUDIES HAVE NOT BEEN UPDATED IN FIVE YEARS, HOWEVER, OVER THE SUMMER MANY STANDARDS FOR DIFFERENT SUBJECTS WERE UPDATED BY THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY , SOCIAL STUDIES WAS ONE OF THEM. • THESE NEW UPDATED STANDARDS NEED TO BE IMPLEMENTED SEPTEMBER 2022 SCHOOL YEAR, SO WE WILL BE WORKING TOWARDS THIS.
UPDATED SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM TEACHERS DID NOT UPDATED THE STANDARDS, BUT RATHER THE ACTIVITIES, LESSONS, RESOURCES, AS WELL AS MADE SURE WE WERE IN COMPLIANCE REGARDING MANDATES • MANY OF THE UNITS ARE NOW INTEGRATED WITH READING AND WRITING THROUGH INFORMATIONAL UNITS AND TEXTS • INTEGRATION OF CURRENT EVENTS THROUGH NONFICTION ARTICLES • K-3 THEME BASED • LEARN FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS ABOUT GOVERNMENT, CITIZENSHIP, GEOGRAPHY, ECONOMICS, AND HISTORY, WHAT IS MEANS TO BE AN AMERICAN CITIZEN & EVENTS & PEOPLE WHO IMPACTED AMERICAN HERITAGE • GRADE 4, NEW JERSEY • GRADE 5, GEOGRAPHY • GRADE 6, UNITED STATES HISTORY I • GRADE 7, UNITED STATES HISTORY II • GRADE 8, WORLD HISTORY • MANDATES • AMISTAD (K-8) • HOLOCAUST MANDATE (K-8) • LGBTQ & DISABILITIES MANDATE (GRADE 7 & 8)

HOLOCAUST MANDATE N.J.S.A. 18A:35-28 EVERY BOARD OF EDUCATION SHALL INCLUDE INSTRUCTION ON THE HOLOCAUST AND GENOCIDES IN AN APPROPRIATE PLACE IN THE CURRICULUM OF ALL ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL PUPILS. RESEARCH IS PROVIDED BY THE SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHERS AND MEDIA SPECIALIST FOR THIS TIME PERIOD. • STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN BOOK CLUBS AND LITERATURE CIRCLE PROGRAM THIS YEAR THAT WILL CENTER AROUND THE HOLOCAUST AND SOCIAL INJUSTICES. THROUGH THE LENSES OF THE NOVELS: BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY, DANIEL’S STORY, I AM MALALA, THE BOY IN THE STRIPPED PAJAMAS, STUDENTS WILL EXPLORE FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCES OF THE HOLOCAUST IN ORDER TO INTERNALIZE AND UNDERSTAND THE GRAVITY OF THE ATROCITIES COMMITTED DURING THIS ABHORRENT TRAGEDY. • HOST AN ASSEMBLY PROGRAM THROUGH THE JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER METROWEST NJ, WHERE ‘SURVIVORS’ COME TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL TO ADDRESS THE 7TH GRADE STUDENTS RECOUNTING THEIR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES. • A COMPREHENSIVE HOLOCAUST CURRICULUM IS IN THE SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM • TEACHERS USE HTTPS://ECHOESANDREFLECTIONS.ORG/TEACH/ AND THEY FOCUS ON SPECIFIC TOPICS.

THEY WILL LEARN ABOUT RELEVANT PAST AND PRESENT EVENTS, AS WELL AS LEARN ABOUT PEOPLE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO AMERICAN SOCIETY, POLITICALLY, ECONOMICALLY, AS WELL AS SOCIALLY.
