Dr. Claude G. Perkins Elementary School Parent and Family Engagement Policy 2019-2020 This policy has been jointly developed and agreed upon by school staff and parents of students served in pursuant to Title I. School Belief At Dr. Claude G. Perkins Elementary School, we are committed to building a learning community of responsible citizens who have a passion for learning through an integrated curriculum. Education is a partnership among parents, students, staff, and our neighboring community. We are committed to providing a safe, respectful and academically rigorous environment. Students will learn through inquiring and collaboration, with the use of innovative strategies and technology to demonstrate mastery. We will celebrate as a community, take pride in our successes, and seek continuous improvements. The Parent and Family Engagement Policy The school’s Parent and Family Engagement Policy, developed by school staff and parents, will be distributed in an understandable and uniform format; to the extent practicable, in a language parents can understand. The Parent and Family Engagement Policy will be distributed in English and Spanish to meet the needs of the school population. Dr. Claude G. Perkins ES will involve parents during the month of February, 2020 in the planning, review and improvement of Title I programs. The Title 1 annual parent meeting will be held the morning of September 12, 2019 directly after Morning Ceremonies on the stage. Copies of the policy will also be available in the office. The PowerPoint is also available online on the school website, http://perkinspumas.org. The PowerPoint will also be reviewed with parents at the first morning Pastries with the Principal On September 26, 2019 directly after morning Ceremonies. Parents may also attend the SOT meeting in October and February to review the policy. The School Performance Plan Dr. Claude G. Perkins ES will involve parents in the planning, review, and improvement of Title I programs, the School Performance Plan (SPP), and the Parent and Family Engagement Policy. The school will involve families in the SPP by including them in planning meetings, explaining and summarizing budget expenditures and school activities, and asking them for their feedback and opinions on planned events. Parents will be asked to review the SPP draft and offer additional suggestions. Parents will be asked to take surveys that are simple in nature while attending Pastries with the Principal each month and also surveys sent electronically to parents throughout the year. The Educational Involvement Accords The Educational Involvement Accords are integrated into the registration process through Infinite Campus. Parents must review Accords prior to completing their child’s registration. Administrators and teachers will have access to the Accords whenever needed for parent/student conferences or other occasions. It will also be available online on the school website, http://perkinspumas.org. Building Parent Capacity In order to build the schools’ and parents’ capacity for strong performance, Dr. Claude G. Perkins ES will provide assistance to parents in understanding: ● Academic content standards, ● State academic achievement standards (the Nevada Academic Content Standards), ● Assessments (including but not limited to: MAP, SBAC, WIDA, AIMSweb Plus, etc.) ● State’s proficiency level targets and Nevada School, Performance Framework (NSPF) This communication will go home in written form, as well as through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal and phone calls from the administration and teachers. Additionally, trainings and workshops will be provided by school
learning strategists, counselor, and the FACES (Family and Community Engagement Services), focusing on preparation for these assessments in order to achieve aforementioned targets. Dr. Claude G. Perkins ES will provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment, which will enable students to meet the Nevada Academic Content Standards.
Dr. Claude G. Perkins ES will have open labs during parent conferences and other school events to increase the amount of parent responses. There was a 39% increase of parent completed surveys for the 2018/2019 school year compared to the 2017/2018 school year. Overall the results were positive, eight topics were 90-99% positive. Parents surveyed: ● 2019-98% of parents felt that teachers care about their child as compared to 92% in 2018 ● 2019-96% are informed about curriculum as compared to 97% in 2018 ● 2019-96% felt welcomed at school as compared to 96% in 2018 ● 2019-94% reported their child feels safe in school as compared to 90% in 2018 ● 2019-97% reported the school sees me as a partner as compared to 94% in 2018 ● 2019-92% the school responds to phone calls, messages or emails promptly as compared to 92% in 2018 ● 2019-99% classroom are clean and organized as compared to 99% in 2018 ● 2019-96% the school sets clear rules for behavior as compared to 96% in 2018 ● 2019-96% administrators take prompt action when problems occur as compared to 86% in 2018 Dr. Claude G. Perkins ES will take the following actions to include parents as full partners in the educational process: Welcoming All Families into the School Community – At Dr. Claude G. Perkins ES, we pride ourselves on creating a welcoming and encouraging environment for all students and their families. The school will host an “Open House” night at the beginning of the year, so that parents have the opportunity to meet their child’s teacher and explore some of the school’s resources. Events like our Fall Carnival and academic nights will promote togetherness and encourage family participation by providing engaging activities for students, parents, and staff. Monthly grade level performances will take place this year with academic make and take workshops attached to the performances. An end of year Fine Arts and Curriculum Night will culminate the school year. Families are also encouraged daily to attend Morning ceremonies where they can send messages of support to students and staff while holding positive signs and cheering for students as they enter the building. Monthly PRIDE Doughnuts will invite families in to celebrate student success. Communicating Effectively – Communications of special events and academic performances will be provided in English and Spanish. The format will be presented using a variety of methods, which will include: flyers, newsletters, calendars, the school website, school Facebook and Twitter account, progress reports, Parent Portal on Infinite Campus, personal contact, report cards, and PBIS direct parent communication platform. Supporting Student Success - The school newsletter will be sent home quarterly in both English and Spanish. This newsletter will provide homework help, study tips, suggestions for handling behavioral concerns, and other pertinent school information along with the Home School Connection Newsletter. Workshops and academic trainings will be provided during parent meetings on a monthly basis. Teachers will request family volunteers to chaperone field trips, work with students, and help with everyday projects focusing on academics at the school. During the year, we will implement a volunteer program where parents can participate at school: meet with small groups of students in classrooms, and assist in the lunchroom. Speaking Up for Every Child – As previously stated, workshops on parenting, health & wellness, conflict resolution, District programs and policies, as well as, academically focused trainings, will be provided at monthly school meetings. Parents will be informed of federal and state laws and regulations and how they affect their children. They will also be trained on how to become advocates in the education of their children through our Parent Meetings and Parent-Teacher Conferences. Wrap around services will be provided using a social worker and classroom counseling lessons.
Sharing Power – Meetings will be held to discuss ways to better serve the Perkins community. Parents will be given opportunities to participate during the monthly meetings. They will also assist with the development of the School Performance Plan, Title I Budget, Parent and Family Engagement Policy and School Plan of Operation. Parents will be reminded and encouraged to attend the School Organizational Team Meetings which will be posted on the website. Collaborating with Community – The FACES Facilitator, learning strategists, counselor, and administration will meet to assess schoolwide family needs and pool resources, plan, organize, and facilitate monthly meetings/trainings. We will provide after-school programming so that students and their families have enrichment opportunities. Title I Family and Community Engagement Center at Watson Elementary calendar will be posted in the office. Training Teachers on Parent Involvement Trainings will be provided for all staff throughout the year during the SBCT (Site Based Collaboration Time). Parent surveys given at the Pastries with the Principal and electronic surveys will be used to assist with the trainings on how to communicate and work with parents as equal partners in the educational process. Coordination with Other Programs The school shall, to the extent feasible and appropriate, coordinate and integrate parent involvement programs and academics in our Pre-Kindergarten program. This will encourage and support parents in fully participating in the education of their children. Collaboratively, the FACES and Pre-K programs will aid families in helping students transition from Early Childhood classes to Kindergarten. Additionally, through the efforts of the counselor and surrounding middle schools, programs will be in place to help students transition from elementary to middle school. Supporting Parent Needs Dr. Claude G. Perkins ES will continue to provide parents with opportunities to express their needs. Regularly held meetings will be advertised and communicated to encourage involvement and improve coordination of efforts. They can also attend School Organizational Team Meetings, dates will be posted on the school website. The previous meeting minutes will be posted on the school website if they are unable to attend. Dr. Claude G. Perkins ES is committed to providing parents with the resources necessary to support their child’s or children’s success in and outside the classroom. Revised 9/2/19
