MATHEMATICS AS-Level ► What are the main features of this course? If you enjoy algebra, you are highly likely to enjoy AS Maths. You will study a mixture of Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics. Pure mathematics builds on the algebra and trigonometry work you have studied at GCSE and introduces calculus. Mechanics includes vectors, kinematics, forces and Newton’s Laws. Statistics includes sampling, interpretation of data, probability, the introduction to statistical distributions and hypothesis testing. A range of online resources will be available, including Dr Frost Maths and Integral Maths. ► Hours of lessons per week: 5 ► Indicative group size: 20 ► How is the course assessed? The AQA specification is linear with two exams at the end of your AS year. Each paper is 1 hour 30 minutes long and is made up of a mix of question styles, from short, single-mark questions to multi-step problems. ► Where can I go next? Progression onto the second year to complete a full A Level. A-level Mathematics is extremely useful in many fields. It is essential, not only for the study of Mathematics and Pure Sciences, but also for all forms of engineering, along with Physics and Computer Science. It is accepted as a strong qualification for Medicine. It can also lead to courses in Economics, Business Studies, Law and Computing. Need More Information? AS MATHEMATICS SUBJECT OVERVIEW If you enjoy working with algebra and the challenges of logical problem solving, you will enjoy AS Mathematics. The course is a mixture of Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics in the ratio 4:1:1 Pure Mathematics begins as an extension of the work you have studied at GCSE, such as algebra and trigonometry. Eventually you will study one of the major disciplines in modern mathematics – calculus. Mechanics includes the study of motion, forces, projectiles and vectors. You may have already studied aspects of Mechanics within Physics and there are strong links between AS Physics and the Mechanics section of AS Mathematics. Statistics is the analysis and interpretation of data. You will learn how to collect data, analyse it and interpret it, using some concepts you will be familiar with (averages and spread) and others that you are unlikely to have met previously such as hypothesis testing. Further Mathematics [AS]
FURTHER MATHEMATICS AS Level ► What are the main features of this course? If you would like to get a much deeper understanding of mathematics then AS Further Mathematics may be suitable for you. The Further Mathematics course builds on the ideas in Pure Mathematics (calculus, trigonometry, algebra and vectors) as well as introducing some rather different ideas in areas such as complex numbers, polar coordinates and hyperbolic functions. We have also chosen components in Mechanics and Statistics as our options for the Applied part of the AQA course. To study Further Mathematics you must also study Mathematics so you will spend 10 hours each week in the Maths department. In addition, a range of online resources will be available, including Dr Frost Maths and Integral Maths. ► Hours of lessons per week: 5 ► Indicative group size: 12 ► How is the course assessed? The AQA specification is linear with two exams at the end of your AS year. Each paper is 1 hour 30 minutes long and is made up of a mix of question styles, from short, single-mark questions to unstructured, multi-step problems. ► Where can I go next? Progression onto the second year to complete a full A Level. Further Mathematics is an A-level which is extremely useful in many fields. It is highly advantageous, not only for the study of Mathematics and Pure Sciences, but also for all forms of engineering and Physics. Many university courses in Economics and Computing may also require an AS or A-level in Further Mathematics Need More Information? Contact: Chris Huffer Head of Maths chuffer@jcc.ac.uk
AS FURTHER MATHEMATICS SUBJECT OVERVIEW If you would like to get a much deeper understanding of mathematics then AS Further Mathematics may be a good option for you. You must study Further Mathematics alongside AS Mathematics. • Some of the topics you will study are: Mathematical Modelling Problem Solving Mathematical Argument Language and Proof • Further Mathematics builds on the ideas in Pure Mathematics Calculus, Trigonometry, Further Algebra and Vectors Complex numbers, Hyperbolic functions and Polar coordinates New Students’ Day 2020 Joseph Chamberlain College

Mathematics [GCSE]
MATHEMATICS GCSE ► What are the main features of this course? This one year course covers number, algebra, ratio, proportion, rates of change, geometry & measure and probability & statistics, leading to GCSE 9 – 1 grades. A text book particularly designed for the course is used and this is supported with worksheets and online resources such as Dr Frost Maths, www.mymaths.co.uk and Century Tech. ► Hours of lessons per week: 5 ► Indicative group size: 20 ► How is the course assessed? The Edexcel specification for GCSE Maths will be assessed by three written exams; one non-calculator and two calculator papers. Each paper is 1 hour 30 minutes long and is taken in the summer term. In some cases, where it is appropriate, students may be entered for a re-sit examination as soon as November. ► Where can I go next? As well as being considered a necessary qualification for Higher Education and employment, a good pass in GCSE Maths is a requirement for starting some AS-level subjects. Need More Information? Contact: Chris Huffer Head of Maths chuffer@jcc.ac.uk
GCSE MATHEMATICS SUBJECT OVERVIEW • A good pass in GCSE Mathematics is often considered a necessary qualification in Further & Higher Education and by employers. • All students who have not yet achieved a grade 4 or above at GCSE Mathematics level must continue to work towards this goal. • Students will be placed in classes with students who are all working at a similar level. • This course runs over the duration of one year and follows the Edexcel specification. Most students will follow the foundation specification where students can achieve a grade 5. • We provide early entry in November for those students who are focused and working on the border of grade 3 and grade 4. All other entries will take place in the summer. New Students’ Day 2020 Joseph Chamberlain College
