                      Course prospectus
                   February – March 2019

“This course was life changing for me! I really learned a lot about grief
and bereavement and developed some good support skills but I also
discovered so much about myself. The trainers were very knowledgeable
                             and supportive.

Trainers
The lead trainer on the course is Rachel Colmer and the co-trainer is Catherine Bajpai. Rachel and

there to support you, so please do not hesitate to talk them if you need to.

Why do you charge for the course?

The full course fee is £250. Cruse Bedfordshire is a charity and we have to cover the costs incurred by
training. Compared to many other counselling courses, this course offers very good value for money at just
over £5 per hour. Some fee reductions or funded places may be available for those who are unable to pay
so please do not let this deter you from applying. Generally these are only available for people living in
specific areas of Bedfordshire who wish to become volunteers for Cruse Bedfordshire. Please email or our
Treasurer Carol Wright, carol.graham@crusebedfordshire@.org.uk

If I complete the course do I automatically become a Bereavement Support Volunteer with Cruse
Bedfordshire?

We have a number of vacancies each year and will select the best candidates to fill these. Prior to the
course you will be interviewed to ensure that it is the right choice for you. The course is the first step to
becoming a Bereavement Support Volunteer. Once you have passed the course you will be interviewed for
a place as a Bereavement Support Volunteer. Reference will be taken up and due to the nature of the work
we do, clearance will also be required from the Disclosing and Barring Service (previously CRB). This seems
quite a rigorous selection process but Cruse deals with very vulnerable people and we want them to receive
the best service we can provide. We also want to ensure that all our volunteers get the most out of their
experience with Cruse Bedfordshire. Priority will be given to those people living in Bedfordshire. If you live
elsewhere you are welcome to apply for a place on the training course but will be need to apply to your
local branch of Cruse if you wish to volunteer.

Feedback from previous trainees

“This course had a strong personal impact on my view of bereavement
and really made me think about death, loss and grief in a way I had not
                           considered before”

“The style of teaching was very professional and humane. The trainers
made a difficult subject approachable and I felt supported throughout the
                                 course”

“This course exceeded my expectations. I have learned more skills, how to
develop them and how to reflect on experiences that I would never have
                        considered previously”.

“I was quite nervous when we first had to work in groups but the trainers
were so caring and supportive and encouraged me to develop my skills.
This has made me realise I can achieve anything I want and massively
boosted my confidence in all areas of life”.

“Sharing my own experiences and listening to others stories in such a
supportive environment was a privilege and a humbling experience”.

“I was sorry when this course ended as it was such a positive experience
and I made some really good friends”
