- EARTH BRACELETS - Who: Elementary School Kindergarten - 2nd grade What: Making an "Earth Bracelet". We provide all the supplies and a virtual presentation. All "Earth Bracelet" packs have been individually sealed and will be sent to the teacher via school courier services. Students will get a bag with all the bracelet supplies to make either at home or at school depending on when the program is presented. A virtual link will be sent to the teacher once you have registered with the material. Goals: Students will be able to explain the importance of plants, soil, sun, water, and air for both animals and people. They will be able to discuss how they use each of these resources in their daily lives and be able to change their daily habits in small ways to preserve the environment. - SEA SURVIVAL- THE TRUE STORY OF DUFFY THE SEA TURTLE Who: Kindergarten - 2nd grade What: Our staff will present "Duffy's Lucky Escape!" This is a true story about the a sea turtle who is rescued after mistaking a plastic bag and other trash in the ocean as food. Presentation will includes ways to reduce our dependence on single use plastic and the harmful effects on the environment. A virtual link will be sent to the teacher once you have registered with the material. Goals: Students will learn to identify single use plastic, reduce waste and reuse more. - EARTH NINJAS Who: Kindergarten - Fifth Grade What: Watch and read a book about Earth Ninja by Mary Nhin. Students will learn about the basic concepts of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. After the book, they will learn how to properly recycle and where their recycled materials can be taken to be processed locally. A virtual link will be sent to the teacher once you have registered with the material. - WHERE DOES YOUR GARBAGE GO?- VIRTUAL LANDFILL TOUR First Grade Who: Social Studies Elementary School aged students 1.G.2.1 First-Fifth grade Science 1.L.1.3 What: Watch a 10 minute tour of the Gaston County Second Grade Landfill and Recycling Center. Social Studies 2.G.2.2 Goals: Third Grade Students will be allowed to see what really Social Studies happens when they "throw something away" or 3.C&G.2.2 recycle something to further educate themselves on recycling and becoming more Fourth Grade environnmentally friendly. Science How: 4.L1.3 Through a virtual tour of a modern landfill facility, Fifth Grade students will observe technology that makes waste Social Studies disposal safe. Students will also "tour" the recycling 5.G.1.2 center and the baling facility and have a chance to "visit" the Methane Reclamation Station where waste gasses are trapped, condensed and used to produce electricity! - BEE THE CHANGE- MEET MISS POLLY NATOR Who: Kindergarten - 2nd grade What: Students will be able to listen and see a book titled Save the Bees written and Coming Spring 2021 illustrated by Bethany Stahl. Afterwards Keep Gastonia Staff will have a video so the students can meet Miss Polly Nator, our educational bee puppet that will present a program on the jobs of bees. A virtual link will be sent to the teacher once you have registered with the material. After the book they will hear from Keep Gastonia Beautiful staff and will explore Coming Spring 2021 the importance of bees. and how and what they pollinate, and ways we can help the bee population. A virtual link will be sent to the teacher once you have registered with the material. Each school will receive a book to add to their school library "Amazing Bees" by Sue Unstead. Books were donated through a grant from the Glenn Foundation to further student education on our amazing friends, the bees! EEn2.2.2, EEn.2.4.2, EEn.2.7.3, EEn.2.8.4 How: Through a virtual tour of a modern landfill facility, students will observe technology that makes waste disposal safe. - ARBOR DAY POSTER CONTEST - Who: Gaston County Public and Private Schools Elementary, Middle and High Schools Important Dates to Remember: Call or email to enter by January 22, 2021 Art Work is due March 5, 2021 Winners announced: March 10, 2021 Award Ceremony: TBD Guidelines: Artwork must be original and include trees in the design Each entry must have contact information firmly attached to artwork Student’s name, school, grade, teacher’s name and artwork title. Limit Five Entries Per School Per Age Division One piece per student No group entries allowed All entries must be on poster board and 22’’ X 28” or smaller Submitting Entries: Drop off artwork at Keep Gastonia Beautiful Office (150 S. York Street, Gastonia, NC 28052 - 2nd floor by 5 p.m. on March 5, 2021 Awards: Once the winners are announced we will determine if we are able to hold a recognition ceremony based on COVID-19 restrictions at that time. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards given for each age division: K-2, 3-5, Middle, High First Place Awards: $50 gift card "THANK YOU FOR Second Place Awards: $25 gift card Third Place Awards: $25 gift card HELPING US CELEBRATE ARBOR DAY!" - 14 -

- GREAT AMERICAN CLEAN UP - SPRING 2021 The Great American Cleanup prompts individuals to take greater responsibility for their local environment by conducting community service projects that engage volunteers, local businesses, and civic leaders. A successful Great American Cleanup project must fulfill the needs of the local community. The Great American Cleanup began as a litter cleanup initiative designed to aesthetically improve our environment by creating cleaner parks, streets, and public spaces through litter removal and elimination. To this day, community cleanups remain at the very heart of the campaign, and the results are remarkable. Who: All Gaston County Public and Private Schools Elementary, Middle, and High Schools When: DATE TBA Where Goals: Select an area of your Cleaner community choice (school grounds, Assist in helping to deter playgrounds, parks, etc.) or litter call for suggested areas. Promote volunteerism Create a healthier, cleaner and safer environment. Info: Registered participants will receive cleanup supplies, including gloves and trash bags. All participating groups will receive a Certificate of Appreciation. ADOPT A STREET This program is to encourage community residents and organizations to adopt residential blocks of streets and keep them litter free. The adopted areas are to be cleaned, at least, every 2 months in an effort to maintain a healthy environment, improve our City aesthetically, and to show pride in our beautiful city. KEEP GASTONIA BEAUTIFUL WILL PROVIDE: 1. Signs for the street with personalized acknowledgement attached. 2. Trash bags, gloves, and safety vests for use by the adopting participants 3. Removal of "orange" trash bags from adopted street sections, as necessary. A signed agreement and all other guidelines will be provided upon contact. THE TALKING TREES TRAIL WHAT: The Talking Trees Trail is an educational walking trail designed to teach students about the variety of trees in our local enviornment. WHERE: Lineberger Park, which has easy accessibility off of Garrison Blvd and Chestnut Street. HOW: The Trail is self-guided. Students interact directly with the trails "talking birdhouses," hearing information and fun facts about 10 tree species native to North Carolina.
