Fort Myers Technical College Goodbye 2020 & Hello 2021 FMTC Newsletter - The Soaring Scene (1/26/21) The mission of Fort Myers Technical College is to provide high quality career and technical training in order to prepare students for current and emerging industries, delivered by a professional and caring staff in a positive learning environment. Director's Message - John Roszell It is my pleasure to welcome our new students and staff members, and to welcome back our returning students and staff!! Fort Myers Technical College hit the ground running this school year, and we are excited to be at the midpoint of the academic year. All of our 20+ programs are serving industries that are in need of technically trained employees. The hands on approach that FMTC takes in all of our programs is exactly what employers are looking for. By completing our programs and earning industry certi cations or licenses, graduates of FMTC are more marketable, have the potential to earn a higher entrance wage, and will be instrumental in maintaining the workforce of the future. I would like to take this opportunity to remind students that daily attendance, along with your work in the classrooms and labs, will help you in developing the invaluable employability skills that employers are seeking. FMTC is just a few months away from the start of some renovations and expansions on campus. The additional space will provide opportunities to increase our program capacity as well as bring on additional programs that are in high demand. Exciting things are happening and we look forward to what the future holds here at Fort Myers Technical College. John Roszell - FMTC Director

Elaine Petrie - Admissions O cer Health Sciences The Health Science Department is excited to begin the use of our new SimCapture Pro. SimCapture is a cloud-based audio/video recording system that has been installed in the patient bays in the Simulation Center. The system records students’ actions and communication between the students, simulator, and acting family members within the patient bay. Once the student has been granted permission, the tool can be accessed from anywhere and on any device. This allows the student to view his/her performance at any time which enables them to identify what they did well and things they may want to improve upon in the future. This is a great learning tool that we are extremely happy to be able to offer our students! Anita Tokie - Simulation Lab Coordinator
FMTC Tech Tots The VPK children in our Tech Tots program were surprised to see Santa make a visit to class last month. Did you know that The Fort Myers Tech Tots Learning Center is a state-licensed, nationally accredited pre-school program on the Fort Myers Technical College campus? The Center is an approved VPK provider for four-year-olds so our college students can have their VPK eligible children attend school at the same time as them. FMTC College students, whose children meet the eligibility requirements for Florida’s VPK program and present the appropriate certi cate, may le an application with the staff at the Center. Marine Service Technology The Marine Service Technologies students enjoyed their visit to the boat show. It is a great opportunity for them to network with the local Marine Dealers and explore new technologies in the Marine Industry. Mike Esterline - Instructor Welding The welding department has gone through a few changes this year. We have decided to upgrade some equipment with newer machines that can do all the weld processes in one machine. We currently have 31 students in the program. Fifteen of these students have passed the rst American Welding Society weld certi cation in the Shielded Metal Arc Welding process with 7018 stick electrodes. These same 15 will be tested here in February with the American Welding Society weld certi cation in the Flux Cored wire electrode with shielding gas. In August, the basic welding class will then move to Advanced Welding where they will be tested also. Working with the employers in the local area has helped us get a better idea of what those employers speci cally are looking for in a new employee. There is no one welding process, and there is no one welding career. FMTC welding gives a student the ability to nd what they like. After all the training and tests, the student can master a couple or just one technique if they decide to. I constantly remind the students to practice the hard positions and master them, because that student is then more of an asset to a company. Brian Taylor Advanced Welding Instructor
Cosmetology Fort Myers Technical College Cosmetology program, self- dubbed “Studio 16”, is preparing students for licensure as Cosmetologists with the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Here at Studio 16, you’ll be encouraged to let your imagination run wild by showing your talents, compassion and love for the beauty industry. Our cosmetology program is run by experienced and knowledgeable instructors who have demonstrated their success in the industry. By blending textbook material and hands-on instruction, students put their skills to work on real clients and projects. Sarah Ross & Vanity Faust - Cosmetology Students Tools of the Fishtail Braid Welcome Trade Aboard to our New Cosmo Students Plumbing The COVID Virus has changed the way we think and act. This semester, protecting each other has created some interesting projects for the Plumbing Class. In a “no contact, no virus transfer” workplace, “hands free” drinking fountain/bottle llers are being installed in common areas. The challenge in replacing existing drinking fountains is it requires relocation of waste/water connections, wall demolition and patching. Thanks to assistance from our Electrical and Carpentry programs, the project is progressing smoothly and without too
much interference with the other programs. Well, maybe a little interference Mike Mayes - Plumbing Instructor Lobster Bisque Short Ribs were Napoleon Our culinary students prepared the Main Entree' Brownie a ve course meal for some Some very generous donors We loved hosting them on special guests. assisted with providing campus, and they loved emergency funds for our DESSERT!!! students, so we thanked them with an amazing meal.
