Halifax Area School District Remote Learning Guidance for Families March 2020 HASD Remote Learning Guide 2020 for Families 1
We understand that these are trying times and recognize the impact of the coronavirus on our students and families. The situation with the COVID-19 is rapidly evolving and we are following guidelines provided to us by federal, state, and local agencies and health officials. Our primary goal is to ensure all are safe and students are provided with an appropriate continuity of learning. We have put together this document to provide guidance as we begin delivering instruction remotely. We understand this guidance does not answer all the questions families may have. However, we do hope it provides a structure and a starting point to begin remote instruction on Monday, March 30th. Guidance Provided to Instructional Staff What technology/apps/student learning platform do we need? Elementary- Dojo is preferred for communication and content delivery. We also suggested teachers explore using Nearpod for the delivery of material. Secondary– Many of our teachers will use Canvas. Some teachers will use other familiar software such as Google Classroom and Nearpod. How are students held accountable for learning and what is expected time for students to spend learning each day? Having weekly assignments, projects, video check-ins, are all ways to assess learning. Once again, focus is on the critical standards needed for your content area. Keep in mind that many families have limited data internet. Our recommended guidelines for MAXIMUM student commitment each day are as follows: • Pre-K: 30 minutes • Grades K-1: 45 minutes • Grades 2-3: 60 minutes • Grades 4-5: 90 minutes • Grades 6-12: 30 minutes per teacher (3 hours max in a day) The guidelines above are meant for any delivery model -- packets, on-line, hybrid, etc. Teachers may find that you must scale back or adjust after the first week with going online/remote. Teachers should give themselves and students plenty of HASD Remote Learning Guide 2020 for Families 2
grace during this time. Everyone is adjusting and many students have multiple roles at home. How is the school communicating with students and parents? All official District updates and information regarding COVID-19 from Dr. Hatfield and building administrators will be sent via our Swift K12 platform by email, text or phone. Feel free to contact teachers and administrators. Dave Hatfield is available at hatfieldd@hasd.us or by phone at (717) 896-3416 x 108 Elementary- communication should continue through email/Dojo Secondary- communication should continue through email/canvas What are expectations for teaching standards? The recommendation is to address only the critical standards for the remaining weeks of the school closure. Academically, teachers will prioritize what is most important. What are expectations for grading? Our focus is on student progress and learning. Our students are going to be at different places with technology, as well as family responsibility and stressors. We need to have academic expectations as we move forward, but we won’t be putting a specific score to student work. Again, the focus is on student progress and learning. However, it is appropriate to track student completion of work. Student work will continue to be used as data to drive decisions and instruction. *The 3rd marking period will have an official end date of Friday, March 27th. Our Intermediate Unit will “make historic” grades no sooner than Friday, April 3rd. The start of the 4th marking period will be Monday, March 30th. What if my student does not have access to the internet? Information was sent out to determine who does not have internet and/or internet issues and we have a list of those families. We will continue to work with the identified families to secure internet access. This process may take some time. We plan to provide equitable access to all students, so plan for instruction that can be delivered to students who have limited internet access. If you experience a situation where a student has internet issues, please contact helpdesk or call (717) 896-3416 x 116. We recognize this issue may persist, please be patient. If there are broken device issues, the device can be brought to the HASD Remote Learning Guide 2020 for Families 3
District Office Monday- Friday between 9am-12pm. Please call ahead (717) 896- 3416 x 100 How do teachers collect student work and have students demonstrate student learning? Keeping with just a few platforms will make both student learning and teacher professional learning more efficient. Our suggested platforms for delivering and collecting student work are: Elementary – Dojo Secondary- Canvas Teachers are encouraged to establish hours for communication with students/families - this could be a consistent time when staff are available to answer questions and provide guidance. It is reasonable to expect communication from teachers and principals in the near future. HASD Remote Learning Guide 2020 for Families 4

Family Partnerships and Support How much time can your students’ developmental age handle for remote learning? And, how much time and ability can your families handle for remote learning? • Depending on the age and developmental stage of the children, they may require hands-on involvement by parents, caregivers, siblings, or others. We continue to consider what we are asking families to complete as it may be a family who lacks time and ability to engage in continuous remote learning, or it may be a sibling or neighbor that is responsible for the child’s supervision and remote learning. How can HASD support our students and families during this process? • Families can contact the school if they have questions about the remote learning process or questions about the latest information that was shared by the PA Department of Education.
